The only point I feel a need to add to is, I disagree that 'a young man going to art school' in Australia but in particular Europe is an acceptable path, it is when young girls or woman do so, they are expected to 'get a proper degree or job' after. Quilty went to SCA and I went to NAS after SCA told my mother that they thought I was wasting my time going to art school because I lacked talent and brains to be in university. I've metaphorically given 2 fingers to them as I'm completing my masters after completing a fine art degree and 3 other full degrees at a higher level. But. there hasn't been a moment where I haven't been asked 'so what are you going to do as a job' because I didn't want to be commercial straight away. I think there is stigma to the 'female' artist (and POC and Queer) ... and the concept of the virile, pollock-esk, male painter is my generations inbred concept of the acceptable artist.
