I thought the most massive oranism was the Kebler Pass Aspen or Pando the Quaking Aspen.
They are both forests of 100+ acres that consist of just a single tree.
Pando is technically a clonal population, not one tree. The trees have extensive interconnections but the aspens do vary a bit in DNA as they clonally spread
Even cells in single human body vary a bit in DNA. And if clonal population is interconnected it is single organism as well. Though might depend on how you define organism. It can get tricky with life no matter how you define it.

The major difference is that every tree is an individual organism that can individually exist and reproduce if artificially separated, while every cell of your body is not and can not.
For the same reason volvox is an organism, while colonies of individual unicellular algae are not. The border between uni- and multicellularity is not as clear cut as it seems to be.
That the genome varies across an organism is typical (and it does so the more, the more cells the organism consists of) due to accumulation of mutations during ontogeny.
but it gets worse: in humans, females even have varying chromosomes (due to seemingly random X chromosome inactivation into Barr bodies) rendering all women technically chimeras, while the males are not.
Isn't this complexity from otherwise pretty and extremely easy to understand, straightforward principles what makes molecular biology so fascinating ?
+ Frank Schneider Yeah but often you can separate twig from a tree and it will continue to grow into new tree. What if the twig is only partly separated and stays connected? At which point the nmew tree starts to be new organism and stops being part of the old one? Many plants grow their own clones on themselves and it is rather difficult to say they are different organism. I mean as long as they are connected how do you tell which cells belong to which one? What if cell from one travels into the other? They are genetically compatible so how can you say that any cell is foreign and does it even matter?
On a side note if you get the right chemicals you can convince single plant cell to grow into new plant.

By that logic, then the mycelium mentioned isn't one organism either, because you could break it up into chunks and it will continue to grow independently.

Well I was wrong. Disappointed he didn't mention those super organisms trees which is like a whole forest but instead of being many trees it turns out they're all connected and with the same DNA. In other words one tree.

Little Cripple not "one" tree - they're all clones... it is very tricky to define whether it counts as a single organism or not actually. Personally, I don't think it does.
Populus tremuloides, aka Quaking Aspen, there is a grove where the entire grove is considered one single organism because it seems the root system is one and there are identical genetic indicators which suggest it is one organism but it is a clone grove so it is a hard to determine for certain.
bacteria is a feeder of other living mass so its muchg lower than plant matter that is the giver ,its simple logic
It's interesting to discuss what kinds of organisms have the most biomass or population, but if we're honest...humans are shaping the landscapes all those other organisms live in, and that seems like a good definition of "Dominates Earth" to me.
While it's hilarious to see fictional aliens try to communicate with chickens, dogs, or cars on the assumption that they're Earth's dominant species, it would be pretty hard for intelligent aliens to misunderstand that. Maybe they would if they don't have a cultural concept of "pet" or "livestock," and assumed that humans were just a bioroid constructed by the _true_ rulers of the planet...until they noticed no other species was kept on life support if it entered a coma.
So bosses and politicians -- fewer of them, but clearly set the agenda for change -- are the dominant citizens.
The dominant species on Earth are obviously white mice, followed by dolphins and only then humans. DonÄt get this wrong. You can ask any vogon.
And there are no chicken or cows on this list.
Except for the fact that we are still utterly dependent on most of these other organisms for our survival despite our technology. Stay curious..........

Dominate does not mean what has the most population. Humans obviously have the most influence and control over the planet.

Also, when measuring biomass of say humans, do they count only humans cells or the bacterial cells inside us too?

It seems a bit odd to me to give the same weight to 1 kg of tree carbon and 1 kg of hummingbird carbon, when the first consumes on the order of 2 milliwatt, while the second consumes on the order of 400 watt, i.e. 5 orders of magnitude more power.
But you can't deny the fact that Tree are so much more successful than a Hummingbird. Well beside humans, but the humans are special little demons that shouldn't be mentioned in any comparison.

Why ? The planet isn't alive and doesn't care ... and the effect of humans on life in principle is negligible when compared with other extinction events.

I realize that would be a bigger discussion but for the sake of a live sustaining planet vs one that can not sustain life, I'd disagree, our planet is absolutely alive.....and your reasoning of other ELEs??? So something happened billions of years ago that wiped out way more life on earth than what human driven change has caused and because that other, completely unrelated event happend to cause more damage/change it makes what humans are doing not so bad? The other guys comment about what humans are doing to this world being negligible just because something that ended more life happend in another time is a dumb argument. My point was about the numbers but to be honest the events he tried to compare are unrelatable. A comparison of an ELE from millions of years ago that was a naturally occurrence to the willful acts that humans take part in today can not be compared. This planet survived all those past ELEs and kept on, time will tell but this world may not survive humans in the end. So nothing has "killed" the earth yet but humans just might. I sure hope not and I hope we learn the lessons the world is trying to teach us sooner rather than later. But to speak to your comment, one murder may be less people dying than 10 murders, but which act is worse? Well bud, that depends on the perspective of the person having that opinion doesn't it? Or maybe the age of the victim(s)? Or any other reason the person deciding which is worse. All life on this planet prior to humans lived off the planet and humans are the first life here to change the world in such a way that massive amounts of life have died off, the face of the planet looks visibly different, not any other species or even has had even close to the affect that we have on this world. So yes, we're the worst thing to happen to this planet but I'm glad there's a lot of good people out there that fight to make this world a better place and are trying to stop the really damaging things that people do before it becomes too late and we can't fix the damage we've caused.

It's more like you don't seem to have any kind of scientific education:
I) A planet is not an organism and thus not alive. The Earth is a dead rock. Neither does it reproduce, not does it have any metabolism, it doesn't have a cellular structure. It doesn't react on environmental changes and it doesn't have an kind of information storage. It's litterally dead as a rock, because that' more or less what it is.
Yes, in contrast to e.g. mercury is it able to sustain life on it's surface, still doesn't make it a living being. A dead corpse also sustains life on and within it without being alive, except you if you also start to define corpses of dead people as living beings. I hope you are not that dumb.
II) And again (I already said it in the first post) "bad" or "good" are human emotional assessments of an event. There is no place for this in natural sciences, as objectively there is no "good" and "bad", just cause and effect. If you want moral guidance, go to ethics or religion and pray to Gaia. Natural sciences only work because they are absolutely free of emotional evaluation and thus free of subjective views. I's not natural scientific to discuss if gravity is "good" or "bad". If you shot your grandma in the brain to get your inheritance earlier, that might be seen in ethics as a kind of "bad" thing, while in science it's just a physical process of accelerating lead through a shelled semi-soft substance, without any adhering emotional evaluation.
What exactly do you mean that we have decreased a certain group by a 'factor of five' (x5) or a 'factor of six' (x6) - a factor of two is alright, because you already told us we halved plant laugh near the start of the video. But does 'a factor of 5' mean dividing by 5 (making the 'x' very confusing) or does it mean halfing it 5 times? Please add some clarification notes to the video, thanks.
This is a great video but it doesn't surprise me one bit that it's plants that dominate. And the only reason why there's so many chickens, cows, pigs and other "cattle" is because people forcibly breed that many into existence. They're life not products, make the connection, Go Vegan. Plant power! =P

lucas bueno you know what is even worse? The kind of vegan that is all for the environment, but then replaces their meat and dairy protein with plants that are grown all over the world and need to be shipped in. (Brazil nuts, cashews, etc)

And Lucas, it's your word against the big American Dietetic Association; "It is the position of the American Dietetic Association that appropriately planned vegetarian diets, including total vegetarian or vegan diets, are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases." But hey, who are they right? They aren't commenting on TH-cam so I guess they know nothing -__-
BinaryTeddyBear, that's indeed something that can be addressed. Although some imported products might still be better for the environment than local grown produce (like plenty of fruits and stuff that we grow in heated greenhouses is actually worse for the planet than if we would import naturally grown products from different countries. At least here in Europe).
And remember that plenty of the feed we feed the livestock is also imported (especially from Brazil where they cut down massive amounts of rainforest for soy (most soy goes to livestock, not our tofu and soy milk btw. ;) )

So you start out asking about mass dominance, then you compare humans (a species) against domesticated chickens (a species) by count and not mass, and then compare both of them to "fish" which are, of course, an entire higher taxonomical class of thousands of species. I think you need to settle on your metrics, or else what's the point of the discussion?

so my husband and i were arguing, if the hole biomass on earth was nearly always the same as today (just in different forms). but if humans extinct so much "mass", i asume there must have been much more in the past? or are things like climate, oxygen in the athmosphere etc. a factor too?

When we domesticated chickens and started breeding them for their egg yield, docile nature, inability to fly and lean meat... did we get it right? Or was there another avian species that could have given us better results, been more efficient, nutritious, or otherwise better?
