I don’t usually post online comments, but I have the coolest John Denver story. When I was 14, I saw him in concert (Spirit of ‘76 Tour). I actually went to the concert to see my uncle perform with the opening act, The Starland Vocal Band (he was their steel guitar player). Anyway, I got to hear all of those famous John Denver songs, including Take Me Home Country Roads, which was originally written by Bill and Taffy Danoff, lead singers in Starland. Fast forward to 2007. My uncle died and I secured all of the photos he took during his music days. So much great stuff. But my favorite photo is John Denver riding in a go-kart, with his hair blowing back and a grin on his face. It’s a gem of a photo capturing a moment in his life that was spontaneous and unscripted.
Far Out! I was in high school in '76 and remember how popular Afternoon Delight was. Calypso is my favorite song by him.
What a great story 😊 and precious memories of your uncle!
I miss this man. His music was poetry, uplifting, beautiful, sweeping...his voice sublime. Gone too soon. RIP John
JDS Valerie You described John Denver to a t! I still get a lump in my throat when I listen to him. I don’t know if you have his 2 CD set The Essentials. If you don’t get it! It’s incredible.
I think so. He was and stay a great poete. Friendly
Respect for your comment
It boggles my mind that someone this amazing really existed
And thank goodness he did! :)
Even the 'hiccup' on leeEAaRn from the sea , is endearing :)
I was there in 77, I was only 6 but Calypso still raises the hair on the back of my neck, a very powerful and emotive song.
Where's the proof
I wish they play this song often on radios. The lyrics, imagining am in a ship watching & the sea, beautiful uplifting song❤️
please do not forget John who did so much towards conserving our oceans. He was a marvel. xx
John, you left us to soon, the older you got, the prettier you sang!! Rest in peace!
I've listened to John Denver my whole life; nobody can match the poetic beauty and emotional depth his songs did. His songs are REAL music. :-)
Perhaps the most beautiful song ever sung and/or recorded...R.I.P. John Denver 🎶🙏🎶
John Denver really should have been invited to participate in "We are the world". He did more for world hunger and other worldwide causes than Michael Jackson even dreamed of.
And he was cool...
Bob geldolf scraped the surface of pop like an out of touch last minute haphazard whatever,it was a brilliant idea and a half rated surprise attack style of impromptu, like improv theatre.
Fun, and fluff,
Ask him and his family, some cousin's??? To do it again, with insight.
Maybe because he was dead
@@paulf4358 John Denver died in 1997 we are the world was recorded in 1985
Effortless voice, no straining, no screeching, just beautiful talent. The world lost a beautiful soul the day he passed, maybe his god wanted him back to sing to him. 💕
He was my dad's fave. I learned to play guitar with John's music, and let me just say...it was a challenge. I used to play poems , prayers and promises to my son when he was a baby 23 years ago. After dad passed 16 years ago, it was difficult to listen to John. I did anyway, cause his voice and compositions are so beautifully written. Even today, as a hard rock fan, John is still absolutely fantastic.
As a metalfan too I agree with you completely 😊
Peace be with you John Denver! We miss you ! : (
I saw John Denver, in concert @ the "Sports Arena", in Toledo, Ohio; in 1973.
I was 17 years old. Good memories.
I miss him so much. His music is unique... the only one that makes me feel something halfway between heart and stomach.
Same here. Some of the only music that gets to me in a transcendent-and-emotional way every single time. Without fail.
100% AGREE
I loved this man his music was magical .
this is so touching & beautiful. I do so miss John, and many others who left us way too soon!
What an incredible man, its a shame he's no longer with us.
I have always loved this song. Missing JD.
A beautiful free spirit who sings to the beautiful free spirits in us all!!!
Roxanne O'Donnell He sure was. His music touched the world.
One of my favorite songs of his, although that list is rather long.... I saw him in Detroit as a teen in 1977, and it was surreal. His voice was a rare and beautiful instrument; clear, pure and always from the heart. My own heart still reels from his passing...even 18 years later.
Wow...that vocal
I'm a rock fan primarily. But I cannot resist the upbeat, beautiful music of John Denver. Calypso is one of my favorite songs, ever. I like it so much, the other night I put it on repeat playing thru my Bluetooth speaker as I went to bed, and it played all night long and I woke up to it as well. His voice was incredible. His music was uplifting in a way that we rarely hear today.
Man the years have gone by! I 💕 John Legend!!!!!!!God Bless,!!!
Heard him in Springfield, Missouri, in 1978. It sounds ridiculous to call a concert life-changing, but it kind of was. It was just transcendent. No words can adequately describe it. Calypso was the last number (I think he may have done a quiet encore after that, maybe something like "This Old Guitar"), and I can still remember exactly what it felt like to hear it. Every single thing he did that night was _better_, if anything, than the recorded versions, but it wasn't just the quality of the music. There was something else going on.
Always a spiritualness to his concerts...and himself, I feel.
It’s not weird at all to say a concert is life changing. There are so many musical and non musical things that can happen at a concert to change your life.
I am so happy to have discovered his music, I am forever grateful!
I can't wait to get my copy of this Box Set. It's going to be AWESOME. Everytime I watch one of these video, I feel as though I am in his presence and it feels good again. I really miss him and anything new he would have written about.
When I get to Heaven I sure hope I can sit and have a conversation with God's John Denver.
What a remarkable man 💗 He held up everything he found dear and important in his music for all to hear, and reminds us of what "living" really is all about 💗💗💗
Brings tears to my eyes. Missing you John.
RIP John Denver. After all these years, we still miss you so much. Your music was magic and stirred my soul.
sailor I am ,sailor I always be,,, thankyou John Denver for teaching me, never will I forget your everything from the ocean...
Thanks, Paula!
Incredible performance
"To work in the service of life and the living" What profound lyrics he penned for this song. John would be appalled at what we have done to the planet since his passing. You did your best Sir!
The greatest singer and song writer of all time..
i love the song and meaning behind the song so much that i named my german shepherd dag Calypso. (well for this song and the sea goddess herself) :)
I would love to see the trio that had him singing "On the Shores of Lake Biwa." That was such a killer performance!
Never ever get tired of this track! What an amazing voice!!!!
John sung like an angel. Love his sweet voice. Will miss him always
. Thank our dear Lord for John's saved memories to view.
A magnificent melding of instruments, melody and a beautiful yodeler.
Beautiful song/arrangement. Verys sad he died to soon...
A man who had spirit. So Gifted. With only love in his heart.
The man, the guitar, and the voice. JD had the pipes. My family watched the Adventures of Jacques Cousteau and the episode with JD. If theres a song that captures the
spirit of the sea, this song does. RIP JD and J Cousteau.
The Greatest Pure Voice. John. Humanitarian.
So uplifting, I miss John Denver.....
Can’t think of another singer whose live voice so closely resembled the recorded version. Pretty sure John recorded every song in one take. RIP
We miss you, John Denver. Thank you for your wonderful music that has touched our lives! RIP great one!!
The European (and Australian) version of the DVD has the complete full Australian show, minus the song "Today", as it was bad on the master tape.
He was quite the marvel in a quiet unassuming way, love listening to his music,, truly inspired.
I was 14 when John Denver played in Montreal on his Calypso tour. This song still resounds as one of my epic memories of that concert.
Godbless John where ever hes to he bought to this world alot of love and understanding through his songs. The world was a better place having known him.
I grew up to this. My dad always played this song...it brings back memories. :)
This is one of my very favorite songs by John. He does a fantastic job on it no matter where he is when he's performing. I love what he sings about here.
BTW, I love his shirt too. It's so John.
All of us have been touched by his music in some way. Great !
#ugottalisten2b4udie Calypso" is a song written by John Denver in 1975 as a tribute to Jacques-Yves Cousteau and his research ship, the Calypso. The song was featured on Denver's 1975 album Windsong.
Released as the B-side of "I'm Sorry", "Calypso" received substantial airplay, enabling it to chart on the Billboard Hot 100.[1] After "I'm Sorry" fell out of the #1 position, "Calypso" began receiving more airplay than "I'm Sorry," thus causing Billboard to list "Calypso" as the new A-side.[2] Hence, "Calypso" is itself considered a #2 hit on the Hot 100.[3] wiki
Happy 71st Birthday John. You were the best! Rest in peace my friend
RiP John - We miss you so much 🙏❤
Such a shame that we lost a true artist so early. He's music lives on with people like Trevor Knight. Keep up the good work Trevor.
My fav song.. for Jacque Coustea.. and his adventure of being out to sea with him.. I lived on Adak Island in the Aleutians Alaska.. at the time this album came out. I played it on reel to reel all day.. blizzards and willawaws blowing outside, fishing salmon in the inlet bay.. tundra and sea otters playing were some of my experiences then.. great memories for this Colorado born and raised Boomer.. 🎶🎵💕
amazing man and voice!
simply the best
This is definitely going on my favs.
John's very, very best tune! Thanks so much, John!
I was at the front in the Sydney show at the start of the eighties just him and the guitar no joke he’s the only one on earth that rattled the floor with his sensor round voice !

@yanksfan43 Hey I'm 17 years old and I appreciate this man's contributions. I just got linked to this video because I was watching Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now." Just wanted to give a friendly reminder that not every teenager is hopelessly drowned in rap music.
Great! Great! Thank you for posting this beautiful song

He was a genius. God rest his soul
greats song John
Forget these ridiculous religions and all their war mongering. Nature is the supreme ruler and JD bless you for singing about it.
My mother went to see him live on this tour, was in the front row, directly in front of John when he sat on the stool and played guitar. Jealous.
Yes.
Even live in concert, in a large hall, he sounds like he is in a recording studio.
Great😊
Awesome.
Seriously, someone gave this a thumbs down? Must not like guys who wear glasses.
Just Great
It Great to listening to
