I live in Virginia and law states any public land is off limits especially city and state own land. State land can be detected only if special permit is given. State parks can be detected only by permit and only on man made beaches on park land not native ground. Law: Sec. 78-80. Hunting for relics on public property. It shall be unlawful for any person, without authority of the city council, to hunt, search out for, attempt to find or seek relics, or to use or be in possession of a metal detector on public grounds or property.
I don't know what that is that would cover both state and city land. I think I'd move out if that was the case. I looked up a lot of the individual city and county laws and there's many that prohibit MD. There are some cities that don't have a law against it in VA though. I'm no expert on it for sure.

Gone Diggin I found out the rules the second time. I normally just look at the govt. Park website. This town has nothing mentioned on it. A guy talked to me later and said police will ask you to leave if they see you. So I dug into it more on the Internet and found MD is prohibited on all city owned property. Needless to say, I didn't go back.
