Kadampa Buddhism is a wonderful tradition of pure dharma translated to English and adopted for the modern people. It has a pure lineage through Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, his root guru Trijiang Rinpoche, back to Atisha, Je Tsongkhapa, and Buddha Shakyamuni.

I am new to Buddhism, and I must say that the thread of comments here is discouraging. It is certainly valuable to disagree, but the judgmental approach seen here is an unfortunate introduction for a novice.

I agree. As someone who has worked closely with this buddhist center for many years, I have never experienced a single negative thing. I am not saying negative things do not exist in it (maybe! It seems like a lot of people think so), but at least in the small Ottawa community, it has brought a lot of positivity to myself and to many people I know. Individual experiences with certain individuals can still be positive, even if someone underneath the same religious title somewhere else does awful things with it. It's the same with any group of people -- a range of positive and negative characters with positive and negative intentions! Anyways, I don't know if I would call myself a Buddhist, but the lessons I have learned here are applicable to our secular modern life and mean a lot to me. As with anything, approaching it with balance and level-headedness (as I believe a lot of extreme-ness and 'culty' behavior comes from a fanatical approach to it or any religion) can only bring you positivity :)

Nkt is a cult that damaged many people. first investigate then judge others. You are against judgement but you are judging yourself. If your new do some investigation first. Blessings

So, my two cents on the whole 'cult' thing.
I started off in another esoteric tradition. Actually, sorta unconsciously. I had a spiritual awakening and I was absolutely not ready for it. This lead to me getting attacked and eventually possessed by a very nasty creature whose focus is essentially pride. (I got a taste of the power you can wield and let it go to my head.) I am not even going to name this creature because I am still ashamed, but I will say it is a prince of demons within that tradition (The Rosicrucians).
That said, I received an empowerment from this tradition and they saved me. I literally had visions of Dorje Shugden riding to battle against this creature. Of Vajrayogini decimating an entire army of demons. Of Avalokitshvara showing me that the practices I was engaging in were directly related to my healing. Of Green Tara sitting beside me when I performed her Sadhanna for the first time. For, I was also scared shitless that I was being lead from one catastrophe to another given the Dalai Lama's stance on this tradition.
With this said, three perspectives on why the Dalai Lama has said what he has:
    1. One possible reason the Dalai Lama has done what he did was a political move. The issue is that the west has a strong aversion to the idea of guru-yoga. As many here say, why not many teachers! Well, for some, one is just fine. Like it or not, there will always be sects which will want nothing to do with anyone else because that's just their preference. In other words, on possibility is that he knows the truth about Dorje Shguden and he may be catering to Western thought so that he can save tantric buddhism from being overrun by the Chinese or other powers.
    2. Another is that he may be the steriotypical big-to-do practitioner whom everyone adores and that is always listed in stories. (e.g. The story of a practioner carrying an old lady across the river who turned out to be vajrayogini.) He is certainly powerful; I have felt it just watching him and people who have studied under him like Dr. Alan Wallace. That does not mean he is infallible or enlightened. As this big-to-do practitioner, things got to his head a bit and he essentially kicked one of the table legs of four school out from under itself.
    3. The last possible reason I can think of is a bit far fetched. It is that Trijang Rinpoche saw that the West would not abide with Kadampa Buddhism given it's Guru Yoga Practices. As such, he had Geshla help establish this method separate of the general institution and the Dalai Lama. They play at being at odds, but they are truly allied. I'd like to believe this, but...
The deities I have interacted with (not just Kadam Deities) say that what is going on is that the Dalai Lama perceives a danger with this practice which, when in controlled environments, is actually not only not dangerous, it is extraordinarily effective.
So, for me, I have found my tradition in Geshe-la Kelsang's teachings. He, the Buddhas, his monks and nuns, and Dorje Shugden himself literally have been working to save my mental continuum from me dropping into hell... and they are doing a splendid job. It is super tough at times, but man, I'd be super messed up otherwise.
One more thing: When they, the buddhas, were communicating with me, other than with vision, they used tarot cards because that was how my mental continuum was programmed in the past. Thus, it's not about not being able to mix traditions and methods for them. They are... wise beyond anything I can put into words. Further, given that the demon prince I was duking it out with was literally a demon of pride, I can also say they aren't doing this because they think themselves superior. What it comes down to is that they are offering something that some people desperately need: the true-blue, one guru method.
Guru Yoga, the only antidote to pride.
Bless them. Oh my, bless them for their courage and strength.
