I was recommended this series by a Lady when I was just 12 like Kathy. She told my Mom, It doesn't have a lot of sex in it. Not adult sex. I think my Mom missed that part. It was my first dirty book and I was hooked until VC Andrews died and her niece just used the same formula. But what an impact this book made. I read the first book in 2 days. 😅

Listen again when you get into your 50's. I read this when I was 13 to 14 years old. It was right around the time that my "evil" grandmother died. Now I know that she wasn't evil... she was sick... the cancer made her mean. I know better than most because I've got cancer as well and I ask her pardon on a daily basis. These books bring back that time of my early teens.

The LifeTime adaptation sucked worse than the 1987 movie! Olivia (played by Ellen Burstyn - yes, “The Exorcist”’s Ellen Burstyn) was way too kind, and her cruelty felt forced. Heather Graham was horribly miscast as Corinne; she’s way too bubbly and fake, whereas Corinne in the novel was much more conniving and calculating, but still managed to put on a flawless façade for her children, at least in the beginning of the book.
And as much as I loved “MADMEN” and “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”, Kiernan Shipka was wayyy too campy and upbeat for her Cathy, and the events unfolding around her, heavily played down as they were.
Come to think of it, everybody was too campy and upbeat in the LT adaptation.

I know intellectually that this is not a good book. The subject matter is appalling, the prose is purple, and the story is rife with plot holes. *I still can't help but be compelled by it.* This novel is literally haunting.
Sadly, the books decline in quality as the series continues. V.C. Andrews became the victim of her own success, pressured by her publishers to keep repeating the so-successful formula that made 'Flowers in the Attic' such a phenomenon, rather than growing as an artist. And after her death they turned her name into a brand, and hired a male writer to keep writing books attributed to V. C. Andrews indefinitely. I imagine that after Andrew Neiderman dies, they'll hire someone else to continue writing books in the same Southern Gothic style.
