You HAVE to mention Michael Kamen when you talk about Comfortably Numb. His orchestra arrangement makes the song (and the album, for that matter). For all you younger folk who may not know his work, look him up; he's worked on dozens of film scores, and worked with many rock bands. He was brilliant.

    • @anthonymichel4660

Absolutely he was an amazing composer. To me the arrangements in the trial is outstanding. He also was an amazing piano player and played on a lot tracks for Rogers solo projects.. Roger was really upset when he passed away I was working for him at the time. It's great to see someone bring him up. He's kind of the unsung hero of the group but he may have preferred that way. 🎼🎹🎷🥁🎻🎺🥁🎵

This song epitomizes to me why David Gilmour is one of the Top 5 best guitarists of all time. He wasn't a fretboard ripper, he was a master of using the guitar as a voice. The emotional range David could generate out of his guitar was truly remarkable. His guitar solo on Echoes around the 7:22 mark is unlike anything I've ever heard - truly amazing.

This is the album that got me into Pink Floyd, when I was a kid... I listened to my mother’s LP so much, she still can’t listen to it, today (I never tired of it) ... my uncle eventually took pity on her and gave me his LP’s of Animals and The Final Cut, for which both she and I were *very* grateful!

Additionally when I saw them in concert and they played this song it literally changed my life and rewired my brain, I was never the same. May sound ridiculous or overblown but the perfect combination of that song, in that moment of my life, in that state of altered mind...I have happily never recovered, nor do I ever want to.

AND it's the complete song whereas 'live at Pompeii' is only half the track and even less at that!!! Certainly, do a reaction to the studio version, but don't waste your time with the half baked Pompeii version where you have a diminished selection of David Gilmore's brilliance, a partial recording of Rick Wright's performance, and a substandard recording of Nick's and Roger's efforts to help lift the song to brilliance. It reminds me of a girl i always wanted but never had.
Knew her since high school, we were listening rock ballads out in the open air, night time, small companies of ppl
    She was with another guy
15 years fast forward and i met her on the road, we shared a coffee, she was just back from Italy, i didn't ask for her phone, i was in some kind of a relationship.
Couple of years later i was walking down the road, and she was coming my way with her friends, she smiled, runned towards me and jumped in my arms.... I was married...
This song is so much reminiscing of her. mellow, beautiful, and gives you the feeling i am in the right place...
10 more years have passed since then. Hope she is doing well, going out to celebrate new year with friends. I would much rather prefer celebrate it with her instead, listening to this very song, silent out in the open air in the middle of the city! Happy new year ppl!
Thanks for the song and the memories mr Decomposer!

The tension and release that the strings and horns create is so subtle, yet powerful. As you said, it's all about the arrangement of the song.

The ostinato that you mentioned with the cellos always felt to me like someone falling into a hole which goes so beautifully with the line "there is no pain you are receding". I just never fully realized it before. Thank you for helping me consciously understand what my subconscious always knew about this magnificent arrangement.

I quickly rolled my eyes at most of these channels reacting to music, particularly music that's been pretty much ubiquitous since they came out... Sure buddy you've(not you) never heard stairway to heaven... But you have done a great job of illustrating the music theories behind the music. Not just reacting but elucidating the music.

Two things that still mesmerizes me about this song is how the brass section pushes the listener up/forward and how the closing solo is full of " contained rage " ( that's how I describe it ) is really something amazing.

I was lucky enough to see them perform The Wall many years ago, when it was first released. Comfortably Numb has been my favourite tune ever since. I play it at least once every week. After listening to your comments about the arrangement, I am enjoying it even more. Thank you

In 1979 I was 14 years old and I remember listening to Roger Waters on the "King Biscuit Flower" show. They played each track then Roger would talk about the song. I recorded it from the radio broadcast and still have it today. "The Wall" spoke to me like no other album before or since. Thanks I enjoyed your take on this song.

With about 40 years of playing percussion and guitar, the outro solo is the best solo I've ever heard.... love many solos from different players, genres, styles, etc... but this is it for me. To go further, the version from Pulse is the best of them.

Loved your expeirence of this. The tragedy of this masterpiece is when it finally fades out. Its true of this song and this band in general that unlike anyone else their work remains timeless and as fresh as it was when released . For me it gives me goosebumps always and I feel like I pick up something new each time!Musical poets like no other.!!

Floyd has always since I was a wee lad been my #1! I bought The Wall on Vinyl when I was 9 and listen to it all the time. One thing you can't do with Pink Floyd is listen to a single track because the entire album is one continuous journey/story and no one ever to this day has done it better! I love all of Roger Waters solo stuff as well!

My brother bought this album when it came out. I think that I was overwhelmed, musically and thematically, when I first heard it. But I remember liking CN the best and predicting, to myself, that this would be the classic track from the album. I think that many PF fans would agree. Your analysis has deepened my appreciation. I now see this as the musical and thematic core of the album.

To be honest your reactions from your goosebumps slide of your hand l, to your smirk of a smile, to you leaning back with the riff, brings me back to my same reaction while hallucinating on some of the best Lsd I every tried, which during this song amplifies the feeling of Euphoric emotions felt during this song... The drugs were bad but the feelings given off during masterpieces like this being played were real as holding someone who was melting like a candle in your hand. On any hallucinogen this song makes you feel all of your reactions amplified 5 to 10 times. Its great. Love your content keep it up

The way the minor verse changes to a major verse coupled with those almost nauseous modulation effects in the verse that then change to angelic vocals and instrumentation in the chorus so perfectly embodies the mood of the lyrics. Just genius 👌

I listened Pink Floyd since 16yo, now I'm 36. I watched The Wall movie many times, and also listened to the double album about 30, 40, 50 times I don't really know, what I know is I went deeply in this masterpiece.
Trying my best, again and again understanding the underlying message(s) (not only those which are concretely represented in the animated parts of the movie).
This piece of art changed my life forever, no doubt. Like it had opened my eyes. I never wrote so much about myself than during this period.
"Comfortably Numb" was, is, and I think will stay forever my favorite track. So... Thanks a lot for having done a video about this one.

There’s an old tape of Dave Gilmour strumming the Em | A > C | G while humming a melody and you can just hear how it’s going to become “there is no pain, you are receding…” -before Comfortably Numb was even conceived. I love that! Had it in his back pocket, waiting to be the balmy chorus to Roger Waters’ austere verse on this song. Such beautiful collaboration.
