It's not Chara that kills, it's the player(aka Frisk), that kills. Chara is the actually nice one. Chara only takes control of Frisk to finish the route when Frisk doesn't want to so that Frisk can reset. And at the end when Chara slashes you, that's her punishing you for killing her friends and family

Also, in the true lab, in one of the tapes it's said that chara simply sadistically 'laughed off' asgore's life-threatening illness when she and asriel accidentally put buttercups in the pie. She also hates humanity. But she wanted to save monster kind, so I'll give her that. I don't believe she's fully evil. This is just my opinion. Also her choice of weapon is a knife... I believe her mindset comes from abuse from abuse/neglect on the surface before she fell down Mount Ebott.
