Think you might find it very different at night Ed. The Fremlins Walk shopping centre was originally a brewery. The riverside was a thriving industrial centre. Factories making Trucks, Buses, Sweets, Brewing and Timber were all based along the river bank.
It looks like proof of the Broken Windows Theory. If you keep a place well maintained and quickly repair any damage then it will discourage further vandalism. If you don't then acts of vandalism will quickly become the norm.
Lived here since i was around 8 years old, always been pretty happy here. The nightlife was out of this world when i was in my 20s, im now 43. Keep up the good work 👍
Maidstone should be a city it's very disheartening that the people who represent this place don't place Maidstone basic right. At the center any plans.
Maidstone is one of the older settlements in kent its mentioned in the doomsday book and was quite a wealthy town at the time as it used the fact about being on the river medway as a trading hub thats where it made alot of its wealth and we had a battle here
The pub you mentioned being Britain's oldest brewery is owned by Shepherd Neame who is the oldest brewery in the UK based in Faversham. Many places to go for good beer in Maidstone though, Ye Olde Thirsty Pig, Craft Brew, The Cellars and The Rifle Volunteers (which is owned by a micro brewery located on the outskirts of town)
It's improved since I was there last, must have been a decade or more ago now, I was basically there all day. Think I'll go back before Xmas and have a wander.
Maidstone is one of my fav parts of Kent, esp the river Medway and Mote Park! Was only last on TV a few weeks back on Antiques Road Trip-did you see it?? Love when Maidstone got mentioned/shown on TV, or in pics, Radio etc + obviously still does! How comes you didn't walk down to the River Medway or to Mote Park?? Woul of loved to of also seen you walk to Maidstone TV Studios where they obviously filmed/stll do it TV shows there etc One of my favs was Classic Kids programme-Fraggle Rock-was only on repeated on TV few weeks back on on BBC Four!
@@EdBrintonYes, you did well Ed. Good report. The Riverside is a delight in the summer. I cycle this a lot. The Old Boat Cafe, gone now for the winter, is a delight. Just along from that is the Archbishops Palace, the most important building in the town. A river cruise operates from here too. By Brenchley Gdns, cleaned up a lot now since the politzei took control again, there's the second Wetherspoons. Both are pretty good at the right times. Mote Park is good too, with a new cafe. They hold some big music events there in the summer. Report as you find it, that's what I'd say. Cancel the keyboard warriors, it's your channel, not theres. You shouldn't have to, but don't go all woke. A turd is a turd. Keep it up Comrade. 👍💯🇬🇧✔️😎
@EdBrinton I feel they haven't looked after a lot of the towns heritage, a lot of unsympathetic new builds especially around the river area, you said in this video and lot of shops were open but they are mostly betting shops, vape shops and food outlets now because a lot of big name shops have opted for out of town retail parks. the river should have been a focal point for our town yet it just consists of ugly buildings. a lot of the stuff that makes this the county town is now moving out ie the Kent police headquarters and army barracks. I'm not saying it's a bad town at all I just feel the council could have done more to make it a glowing county town.
@EdBrinton honestly I sound negative but it's not as I love this town it has a lot going for it but could be so much better, I'm 38 and lived in gillingham for 10 years so I definitely know it's not a bad place to live but I don't see how it couldn't have been preserved in the same way Canterbury and Tunbridge Wells have.
As a long time Maidstone resident, surprised how positive you were in your reaction. Brenchley Gardens behind the museum used to be nice, but now it is one of the hangouts for the local druggies, to the extent that it is now gated and closed at night. You didn't mention how many closed shops there are in the Mall, the reason why it is not busy like it used to be. You could see a whole row of vacant units behind you in some of your shots. Not a bad place to live, and better than some Kent towns but there are better.
@@EdBrintonIndeed. I wondered why the comments were turned off. More keyboard warriors I suspect! Glad you made it Ed. Wasn't too scary after all! Lots of interesting comments again. End of the day, most towns and cities have suffered in one way way or another these past few decades, and Maidstone is no exception. Probably the worst aspect of living and working here, is the Borough and County Councils planning departments. Roads, traffic issues housing, and new developments are a real mess. The amount of green and brownfield sites lost forever here is quite insane, and its just going to get worse. But glad you saw some it at least. 👍💯🇬🇧✔️😎
Living in Maidstone myself for the last 2 years and beinh from North Kent (lived in Dartford & Greenithe) I must say it really is a nice town. Has its bad bits but don't they all. Must of been a shock after going to Sheerness, wouldn't recommend anyone to go there 😂😂
So weird to watch 😂 I live near Maidstone and I go there often. I think it's pretty decent. But I've only really been to the main areas. Not really any places far from the mall and high street area.
Maidstone is one of the better towns in Kent, way better than Dartford and Chatham and still has a nightlife too (which is really rare nowadays) Senacre Wood, Parkwood, bits of Barming and bits of Tovil aren't nice but apart from that I like it.
