In addition to local slang and colloquialisms, you also have people that talk softly, don´t pronounce all of the syllables, and suddenly you wonder if you´re in a completely different country. So much for being close to fluent. Foiled again.
The best solution I found, so far, it is to know what you want and do not let them speak. Example: hello! regular cappuccino, medium size no toppings, pleeeease (long please helps)😂😂😂
That's not the point. She talks like that on purpose so that she can repeat everything extra clear like to a child and convince herself that her customers are dumb.
@@ColemanRBentz-888 It’s mostly a habit of young people. Most older people don’t do that because when they were in school they were taught how to speak correctly. It was part of English classes. Most schools now don’t even bother with that. Parents also used to tell children to speak clearly, another practice done by very few. The dumbing down of America.
I feel like if I realize someone is having a hard time understanding me I'd just be mindful of talking slowly and clearly. You never know their circumstances
As someone who has trouble with hearing and needs to process words longer: THANK YOU. I can guess what's someone is saying as I speak English quite well, but being in a country where everything is different - including trivial things like the process of getting food, the culture of talking to people etc - makes it so hard to guess what the person is saying, because I lack social context that I would normally have in my country
As someone with auditory processing issues tysm 😭 It’s so stressful trying to hear people sometimes and my brain takes forever to load what they were saying and so there’s a lot of awkward moments but I appreciate the people who get it and are patient
I've done the same. The last time I worked retail I had a few different instances of people with a variety of disabilities shopping/needing assistance, and I tried to make a point to match my speech to theirs. If they were using simple, straightforward language, I did as well. If they spoke slowly, I waited while they spoke and responded in a slower way (not excessively so because I didn't want them to feel mocked, but slow enough that I was sure they wouldn't likely be struggling to follow what I was saying). I had on woman who struggled for several minutes to count her change before admitting she was from another country and didn't remember what US coins were worth what! I offered to help and showed her each kind of coin, it's name, and value, and together we counted out her change. It costs so little to be kind to others, especially when it's clear they could use some extra support.
Definitely there is no better videos on Internet to improve English skills easily, specially vocabulary, I can watch a lot of them and after repeating it another day to memorize. Thank you so much!!
Keep in mind some cultural differences. For example in Spain most bar got 1 or max 2 beers from barrel, and all other varieties are bottled. You can specify size but "give me a beer" normally translates as: just give me the common beer you serve in this place.
Agreed. Im a Starbucks barista and I have people come in asking if we sell coffee. Like…my guy…YES. I have patience for people when they order in the cafe, especially if they speak little to no English. I’m 1st gen American, my parents barely speak English. But through drive thru…baby we’re timed and I expect you to already know what you want
Just ask for the correct sized brewed coffee with however many creams/sugars as you want. Saying brewed will help a lot (unless you want something else). Also in real life, we won’t ask if you want brewed coffee hot or iced, since we know. And don’t worry about “tall, grande, or venti” that’s specifically at Starbucks, and they seriously don’t care if you say that or small, medium, or large. Edit: I wanted to add that baristas will definitely be patient and happy to help if you need help. I just wanted to give a template on how to order. [Size] brewed coffee with X sugars and cream (or a little bit of cream or lot of cream)
It’s very confusing because “grande” means large in Spanish and Italian and that’s supposed to be the size medium, the small is called tall and the large is called venti, come on!
It makes sense to teach beginners through an approach with a focus that gets down to basics, strips away some nuance and makes things digestible. Understanding some foundational words, phrases, grammar etc can really be the bedrock as we move on to advanced things, particularly learning how everyday people really talk. It's always key to know whether you just want to learn some things to communicate a little while traveling, whether you're studying as a hobby, or if you're committed in the long run and what context you might be using it (Ie the difference between working at a law firm versus a nightclub). As this skit shows pretty realistically, these situations may be embarrassing, and certainly not the way to minimize stress and culture shock if you're looking at taking on a high pressure job on a work visa for example, but really it's fine if you're only in the county for a week or so, as you will certainly see improvement from such immersion. If and when we learn slang and casual pronunciation should be directly tailored to our goals, interests and how we learn personally.
intresting fact! starbucks spell our names wrong on purpose so we would post about it so people would see how theyre names would look like so that basically means were sponsoring them😅
Interesting fact! I'm a former sbux barista and this is a common myth! At least in my experience, it often just LOUD and BUSY and im dyslexic. I promise your average barista doesnt care enough to push some stupidly specific marketing scheme, let alone one intended to intentionally anger customers. No manager or shift leader has EVER told me to do that, and I worked w them for 4+ years. Just my experience tho
As an Italian I'm so confused by the "Grande / Venti" sizes. "Grande" in Italian literally means "BIG", "Venti" can both mean "Twenty" or "Winds", depending on the accent on the E. I would be so confused in a situation like this, which one is like regular/normal size? lol
This happen obly in USA and Starbucks' when they're opened abroad, try to ask something like this in Italy where coffee is one of the most drunk things, and I assure you will find yourself on the street without realizing how you got there
I've had this conversation in several other languages. I am always grateful for the willingness of the staff to slow down, even if they are secretly rolling their eyes at me. So much for being close to fluent. Foiled again.
And they speak a mile a minute, too. They also get really annoyed if you make any sort of mistake.
You can not expect a special snowflake treatment just because you do not know the language. They got work to do, not babysit you.

THIS IS SO TRUE 😭😭😭 I'm scared to order 😣
The best solution I found, so far, it is to know what you want and do not let them speak.
Example: hello! regular cappuccino, medium size no toppings, pleeeease (long please helps)😂😂😂
You can do it! ❤️

The 'Meri-mutt speech is really on point 😂
There are so many English speaking people that barely move their mouth when they speak it's frustrating.
That's not the point. She talks like that on purpose so that she can repeat everything extra clear like to a child and convince herself that her customers are dumb.
@JoergWessels 🤣🤣🤣
God damn, some casual slurs getting upvoted on youtube😂
"Muh muricuh bad" You people really are obsessed.

In many parts of the US if you say something like "I'm learning English, keep it simple" we will. We know we can be mumbly and confusing sometimes.

I'd do that but I don't want to get shot.

Simply the best place to study english, I'm from Brazil and at first I swore you were too :)
I love this! The world isn't always so kind and polite!

okay but just imagine being a bartender and the customer says "give me 1 drink"
or being a waitress and the customer says "i would like some food"
They do this often. "Give me a beer." Any beer? Dealer's choice? It's a lot faster to order specifically what you want. 😅
Well, actually, in Italy, a coffee is just an espresso. So, the costumer is not so wrong.
If someone asks for a regular coffee, it's pretty obvious what they want.
This video made me to subscribe the channel. 😊

You better ask yourself if the waitress speaks proper English...

I'm so afraid to buy coffee alone.
You can do it! ❤️❤️❤️
@@lex5938 thank you so much❤️
Please don’t!! I used to be a barista and I had no problem being patient with new costumers❤
🥺
You can do it! ❤
The more you practice, the easier it will become.
I believe in you. ❤️
Take good care, friend. 💗
It’s very confusing because “grande” means large in Spanish and Italian and that’s supposed to be the size medium, the small is called tall and the large is called venti, come on!
very interesting lesson❤❤
If the waitress were an angel, there would never be such communicational issues ... 😅😂🤣 bravo to all English learners... (including me - myself) 😅🤭
Well, when people find out that I am foreigner, they nearly always kind to me
It is not an expectation, it is a clear CTO's vision of the product! ❤😂

intresting fact! starbucks spell our names wrong on purpose so we would post about it so people would see how theyre names would look like so that basically means were sponsoring them😅
Поэтому, даже когда санкции уберут, я никогда не пойду в этот ваш Старбакс. Хитрый маркетинг меня раздражает, особенно то что вы указали.
tbh sometimes we genuinely cant understand what u said/dont know how to spell and we dont have time to gaf about that when theres a rush going on
Interesting fact!
A barista wrote my name as Peth
THE REFERENCE TO 2 BROKE GIRLS (Caroline and the costume)
As an Italian I'm so confused by the "Grande / Venti" sizes.
"Grande" in Italian literally means "BIG", "Venti" can both mean "Twenty" or "Winds", depending on the accent on the E.
I would be so confused in a situation like this, which one is like regular/normal size? lol
Tall = pequeño, Grande = Mediano y Venti = Grande.
I ❤ ur channel😊
It took her 6 attempts to figure out how to communicate with this customer. The service is top notch!
It took the customer 6 times to know how ordering works
@@sweetsunnyvibesmore like she couldnt, cuz it isnt even her native language
Americans expecting Americano to be the “normal coffee” is just too good
Americano and brewed coffee are not the same.
I don’t think Americans expect that? Normal coffee is drip coffee. Americano is espresso over water
At least it’s free, she never said the price 🗿
She said 1usd
Hah?
VALES BURGUER SI DIJO EO PRECIO 😂
10.50 is not a price???
Very nice! Congrats!
Also, appreciate about Mango languages that the first lessons (used to be at least) always about coffee. They know what we need when travelling!
That's why introverts don't prefer such places... they'll enjoy homemade coffeeeee ☕🙂
True. Aeropress changed my life!
Man, this is a life saver. Though English is not my first language, I am good at it. But dread going into Starbucks. Always wondered if something was wrong with me. Good to know even native speakers have this issue! 😅😂
I think every place that sells coffee should have something on the menu as a standardized "coffee." I do enjoy customized drinks, but I feel like a large number of people I know don't want anything to do with that, and just want simplicity
If in Indonesia the cafe staff were unfriendly, they would be given one star because in Indonesia all services must be friendly to customers.😂
