10:55 The Nazis did not store their gold in Switzerland. This would have been considered treason if ever one found out. Moreover, there was no reason for the Nazis to store their gold or money in Switzerland; why should they? They were convinced they would win the war.
As a conclusions, there wasn't any gold from Nazis to keep for the Swiss after the war, neither.
Both of these stipulations are common misconceptions.
What is correct, however, is that the Nazis sold their gold to Swiss banks against foreign currencies, which they needed to pay for goods they imported, since they couldn't pay with their German currency due to the high inflation.

And yes in the 1980's Switzerland had 600'000 Active Reserve-Wehrmänner it could mobilize in 24 hours. Today as Germany is bankrupted by the Merkel and now Red Green Hampelman governement who's corrupt Ursula von der Lie has completely destroyed Bundeswehr you have most equipment not working in Germany...some of your tanks had BLACK PAINTED BESEN-STIEHLE instead of machin guns. The 40km reaching Oerlikon Guns in the Rhinevally could fire for 14 days never running out of ammo. Switzerland today has a problem..TO MUCH LEFT OVER AMMO.

Hello from Switzerland; I doubt the tunnels/bridges etc. were constantly loaded with explosives at all, at best a few during any crisis. But that doesn't matter, in an emergency they would be ready to do it again very quickly, since this was already taken into account when planning most of the properties.
Most of the Swiss conscripts also have their equipment and weapons at home when they are not on duty, most of them get the weapon as a gift at the end of their military service (or you can buy it for a small fee, but converted to a semi-automatic).
The thing about the air-raid shelters is also true, we have air-raid shelters for over 110% of the population.
Now, to the actual topic; what does an attacker get from our country if the most important traffic routes and other infrastructure are destroyed, if he has to invest vast amounts of resources in the conquest and must also be prepared to accept great losses (not just military, think reputation, finance, etc.)?

    • @beyondEV

Cold war times: Explosives where present, but never the primers/detonators. Army size also is from back then.
These days it's 40k mobilised on short notice, 120k full mobilisation and the explosives are no longer installed (still, if all trained military personal no longer in service would join in, you probably get up to 500k). would be about 5 years to gear things back up to cold war readiness levels. it's assumed that any threat which could penetrate surrounding nato would be recognizable years in advance.

10:55 I would be lying if I said that's not true. But it was single individuals, mostly banksters, who did it. Towards the end of the war, my grandparents hid a small Jewish family in their basement from the Nazis. That was very risky back then. ...and we're not that rich. Everything is expensive, food, rent, insurance, houses, everything. In relation to foreign countries we are an expensive country and therefore we are "rich". Our wealth is our nature, the mountains, lakes and rivers.

Look up the washington agreement of 1946.
Nazigold isn't the issue neither were other nazi german assets all that was given back.
However jewish victims of the holocost also had assets which remained unclaimed after the war.
Another issue was that german jewish assets got the same condition as other german assets.
Both issues were resolved in 1997.

The secret airbase is wildly exaggerated, to be fair. It exists, but the location is openly available information (the only thing classified as "secret" is the infrastructure of the cavern itself), and you still need a regular runway to launch a Hornet, no launching it from the mountain. A classified number of Hornets can be stored and maintained under the mountain, but they're still launched from a runway.

Yes, preatty much every critical infrastructure in switzerland was rigged with explosives or was build in a way that it could easily be destroyed if needed. But that isn't the case since about a decade anymore. Explosives got or are being dismanteled.
If I remember correctly though, I think there was a bridge constructed on the swiss border to germany, where germany payed for about half the bridge, and we still unknowingly put explosives in it.

I never did the army since I'm a woman and it's not mandatory. In shooting, function is above the military grade. And for the gold thing I'm thorn between the right thing to do and surviving economically speaking. not true, Switzerland was a banking powerhouse well before ww2. The country was the first in continental Europe to completely transition to an industrialized economy (to the point that about half the wage-earning people in the country were female by 1890 already). Its cities have been major economic powerhouses for centuries.

@@potatius6421 this is true, however much of the countryside was rather poor. Very poor indeed. So it's really a tale of "two countries" as I like to put it.
Moreover, a lot of the gold/nazi loot controversy has to do with rightful owners not being able to be traced and identified (or alive at all) since the Nazis destroyed basically all evidence so yeah, us Swiss didn't "hand out" any of the assets which plenty of people, and countries, were out to get. So it's a little more nuanced than is often being made believe. But that isn't as attention grabbing so here we are... A world of fake news, halftruths, ideology and make believe....

Switzerland exists only because the representatives of Europe needed a buffer zone between them after the fall of Napoleon. So the cantons, each of which sent its own representative (Switzerland as a country did not exist yet), were allowed to continue to exist on the condition of maintaining strict neutrality. This was in 1815.
The cantons then allied to form a federal state in 1848 and declared the first federal constitution adopted on September 12, 1848. Consequently, the correct birthday of Switzerland is September 12 and not the hair-pulling August 1.
And yes, we are allowed to take our Army rifle home, but we have to turn in the ammunition.

Austria and Russia had no role in the destruction of the "Helvetic republic". If anything, they lost the war in 1899 (especially the battles for Zürich), making Switzerland a French territory. All good things though, it gave the Swiss a constitution and made it an actual country through strife.
