Alex said in an interview that this song was about a romantic couple on a vacation. The band met them and they asked about directions to places they wanted to go.
Hence, "and even if somehow they could have shown you the place you wanted."
This song is probably good wishes to the couple, "and I hope you're holding hands by new year's eve"

The voice crack at 2:23 tho. I know people usually don't like when their voice cracks while they're singing but there is something about his voice cracking during this part that makes my heart melt just a little bit.

Got goosebumps at the end when they kicked it up a bit. It was as though all hell was breaking loose in the background and Alex's voice remained as sultry as ever, soothing you through to the final part of the song gently. Damnit Alex, take me now.
