- Publishing on a budget is SO important because ultimately self-publishing is also a business. Businesses look at profit and loss, aiming to have MORE profit than loss, so when it comes to self-publishing it can be extremely beneficial to start out investing more of your TIME than your MONEY.

In my humble opinion, there are two areas where we need to spend a little money and hire professionals: cover design and editing. Because people DO judge a book by it's cover, and you don't want your hard work to appear sloppy or riddled with typos.
That said, those two things can be incredibly expensive, so In this video I'm diving into how to find editors and cover designers on a budget, as well as other ways to cut costs, especially if you want to publish your book for FREE, which I'll cover at the end of when we go over how to publish your book on Amazon (through KDP) or other vendors (through Draft2Digital).

I’m self-publishing a book that my niece actually came up with. It’s about mermaids and humans working together to save the planet; basically. When I sent the original “book” to someone on Reedsy, they suggested I make it into a five-book series. So, I’m in the process of making the first book in the series 😊
Premade covers can be a great cheaper alternative for book covers. The trick is to spend the time to find one that really matches your book - then it's as if you paid to have it designed.
Just bought a pre made cover and it looked amazing and fit my story really well! Pre-made covers are an amazing resource for starting writers
I would love a video showing how to manage/stay organized when selling your book on multiple vendors, such as the case when going through D2D or IngramSpark.
Also, how using an aggregate works differently than uploading work directly to the vendor itself.
That's an awesome idea! I have uploading to D2D on my list of upcoming videos for sure! I prefer to avoid Ingramspark whenever possible, so I don't use them for ebooks at all, but if you're thinking more along the lines of a video that lists all the places I upload/and why/and how I juggle them that'd be a fun video! (And complicated lol!)
@@BethanyAtazadeh yes! That's exactly what I mean. I am strongly considering D2D for ebook and definitely Amazon for ebook and print. I am also pondering Barnes and Noble for print, but if I use B&N for print, I don't know if it just makes sense to upload my ebook there too and use D2D for the other vendors. It's a lot to juggle.
Awesome! I have loved D2D (but also do publish directly to Amazon like you mention as well). B&N uses Ingramspark printers (from what I've heard at least), and can be a little harder to use for uploads/take longer/take more of your royalties, BUT they don't have that $50 uploading fee and it could be nice to have that buffer between you and Ingramspark. I probably wouldn't bother to upload your book to places like B&N or Ingram, since their focus is print, and the other above companies are much more focused on ebooks, including having better royalties, easier income tracking, more user-friendly uploading pages, etc. :) Hope that helps, this is an awesome video idea! (p.s. I'd def recommend starting out with less and adjusting to publishing first before adding more to your plate too, you can always upload to more vendors later, you don't have to do it all at once! :)
I’ve worked with fiver for my latest cover and had a good experience!
Good to know! It looks like a really good set up!
Yes give us a video on making your own book cover! My son want to write a book, he's 10, and it would be so helpful to know what we need to do.
Will do! :)
I am a professional editor. Even I do not rely on myself alone for editing my own authorial pieces. I know what I "meant" to say, and can easily not see what I "actually" say. So even if you have the skill set, extra eyes are a must.
I 1,000% agree, extra eyes are super important! But that doesn't mean they have to be costly, many times authors on a strict budget can find people willing to read for free or for other things such as swapping skill sets.
@@BethanyAtazadeh When in college we had to do editorial sample work. So, if you're (an author) willing to let a professor see your book, working with an MFA student could be a great budget option for authors too.
I love your videos you’re so helpful and your tips are really helped me with writing my book which I’m almost finished 10,000 words to go!!
I’m waiting for the stolen kingdom series but Amazon has been holding up my delivery for the past three months
Thank you so much! I hope the books arrive soon, I've had some trouble getting books in the mail too lately, but three months is crazy!
IKR Amazon has been hurting my feelings lately.
Bethany this was so so helpful! You give me such hope and encouragement in my own journey to self publish. Thank you!
Yay! I'm so glad it was helpful! :)
Thank you, Bethany! These tips are all very helpful.
Yay I'm so happy to hear that! :D
Thank you for all the editorial help. I'm just starting my editorial career and looking for writers to help is so high on my list.
I learned how to use GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) using TH-cam tutorials so I can create my own book covers. It takes a lot of time and effort, so I understand why having someone else do it for you can be so expensive.
This video is great! I've been in the process of writing my book and it's a challenging process to learn everything. I've always wanted to learn the whole process including editing and book design. First comes writing though. I enjoy your videos you teach so much.
Glad it was helpful!

Your friend that is preparing to publish, does he have an author platform that I can follow?
Hey Erica! From what he told me, he's planning to stick to his personal accounts, but if that changes I'll let you know! :D
This is the exact information I was looking for! How to give it away for free! Ur the best. Though I missed penny in this video.
Awesome! Thank you!
You can find some affordable editors, proofreaders and cover designers on *kboards* too.
You can see if anyone has recommended the person or if they have had a bad experience using their setvice.
Wow--totally didn't realize Goodreads was a hub for writing side-industries! I've tried making lists and joining in on clubs with not much joy. Also, just stumbled across Reedsy, like, last week. How did I not know?? I've got 5 books out! Oi. Nice job on the video, very useful!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed!
Hi Bathany great, informative video as always :) I've been working forever on my first children's book and am now putting it together and starting to work on the more business/admin side of things. One thing I noticed is your publishing company listed in earlier videos has been taken down but your author page is still up. How can self publishers create/host their publishing biusiness site and author site ona budget? I plan to write more children's books and some other genres. I don't know whether to just have my author page listed on my publishing business website or have a separate website (expense expense expense) or just have a Facebook author page to start. ANy suggestions about this? Website hosting isn't cheap when you consider all the necessary extras that need to be included!
What is publishing? Can you walk us step by step through the mechanics of publishing? Thank you.
If you want to self publish for free then you can try some of these things:
*For editing* use Beta readers who read a lot of books in your genre. Some authors have dozens of Beta readers who help them shape up their book.
Use Grammerly and pro writing aid (free option) to help with grammar and errors.
Yes English students might be helpful too. Or a teacher who has some spare time.
Try Goodreads for Beta readers or find them on social media. Reddit even has some people willing to read unedited books.
*For covers* you can use gimp for free or canva for a basic cover. There are a few videos on TH-cam that can help.
Some of the people who make wattpad covers might help you out. Check youtube or wattpad to contact some of them.
Hi Bethany: I love your videos. I am a college graduate accountant. I have created an Excel spreadsheet on this subject that I will send you. I don't know how to get it to you. It is made up of your categories and accounts that I have added (Chart of Accounts). It will identify all the money you actually spend on your book project.
I love your channel. It's full of fantastic advice!
Thank you so much!
Just looking at Draft2Digitial - do they only do ebooks? Or do they also do paperbacks?
I have heard rumor they're doing a beta test for paperbacks, but don't know the details - would definitely be worth looking into if you want to try somewhere else!
I need help with developing my book, but developmental editors are soooooo expensive.
They definitely are! I am so thankful there's a wide range of prices because some of the more experienced editors charge an arm and a leg for that!
If your friend publishes it, please let us know!
absolutely! :D
This is so helpful, as always. Thank you!
Yay! You're so welcome!
If I'm wanting to do print books as well as ebooks, which platform would you recommend?
I personally love KDP (kindle direct publishing), which does both ebooks and paperback
Awesome, and it is exciting that's how you know it's your gift cuz you get so excited keep it up Galatians chapter 6 verse 9 is for you thank you.
Thank you.
I would like to read your friends book when it’s published ☺️ hope you can promote it when the time comes 🥰
I think he's only just begun writing it, but definitely would love to help him promote when he gets to that stage! :)
Thanks for sharing. I’ll have to check out 99designs. It looks like they do multiple things.
It does!
Thank you!
Absolutely!
It was all about editing wtf
LOL 😂 what exactly do YOU think it should have been about, hmm? The actual publishing step is FREE. It's the steps leading up to it that cost money, and the editor is by far the most expensive. If you actually knew anything you'd know that.
