I live in the "GCC" - Kuwait in particular. This exact truck is still in production and you can buy a 2024 model right off toyota right now,. Newer editions do come with some modern-day upgrades and packages such as, "New headunit with AndroidAuto/CarPlay, LED headlights, Automatic transmission, Snorkel, (ABS/EBD/BA/VSC/TRC/HAC, Lane Assist, Cruise Control)"
Fun fact: this truck is known as "شاص - /Shas/" in the Middle East which means a literal "Chassis"

I see a lot of my 1979 Toyota 4WD pickup w/ the 20R engine in this Land Cruiser. My dad sold it to me at 120,000 miles. I put 120,000 more miles on it before selling it to my brother who put another 90,000 miles on it when he sold it. I should have bought it back from him. Tough as nails and would haul much more than its stated capacity without flinching.

They are indestructible. In New Zealand while mucking around in a river a 70 series got stuck on a large rock and all 4 wheels were not touch the river bed. After a couple of hours it was left. It was sitting in the middle of the river for several weeks. It was checked to make it was still in place. On one check only the top part of the cabin was visible with the river running through it. When finally pulled out it fired in to life while being towed. The seats and seat belts were replace and the wiring was ok.

To be fair fresh water and salt water makes a big difference. I love Toyota, but I'm sure many other cars would have done the same. Years ago at a shop I worked at, one of the customers had bought a "cheap" flood truck (Ram) that had been exposed to salt water. As far as I know it was never fixed because the damage to wiring was so extensive.

These trucks are found pretty much everywhere, but North America. They are still common to find in Latin America, Middle East, Africa and of course Australia. You can even find 2024s and don't look very different from this one. They also had some other chassis variations available in short and longer versions. Same with parts, you can find them everywhere except North America.

I absolutely love these things, they are unkillable. The moment I saw the front end, I noticed the Saudi national emblem on the grille. Depending on what country you're in, they all had local names for it; in Saudi they were called the "Shaas" from the word for chassis. In Kuwait, they were called "Abu Shanab", with Shanab being Arabic for mustache, because the early variants had a front bumper that supposedly resembled one. Good times, great trucks. For the first time ever, the newest generation is offered with an automatic transmission, which deviates from it's long standing tradition of having a stick shift only. Thank you for putting this video together!

Yup, it seeps oil all over the place (anti rust system! Lol) but I know how to use an oil bottle and grease gun and the right hole to stick it in, so no problem. Just change in time and grease it and you're good to go. It's done many long trips fully loaded into the outback, never let me down.

Love that truck to bits, air conditioning was good, suspension was very stiff, fairly quick.. faster than the Hilux at least and in my country instead of the protection for the rear window they had a factory roll bar bolted to the bed. Such a cool truck, I miss it dearly.

Nostalgic. My father is from Trinidad and had a 85' Toyota SR5 DOWNEY edition. Lifted. Roll bar. KC lights. Warn winch. Steel brush guard. Had it shipped to Florida when he immigrated to US. Then shipped to Germany where he was stationed in Army. Then had it shipped back to US. Grew up with that truck. Learned how to drive manual in it. The dash, AC, clock, door panels and handles, corner windows, sliding back window, tailgate and so on are all exactly the same as this LC. The engine gave out in my early teens and it just sat and rotted in the yard for years. He had promised I could have it eventually but he wound up selling it to someone who knocked on his door offering to buy it. Shame he let it go (for next to nothing I might add) considering how awesome it was and how sought after they are now. Would have loved restoring the thing.

That bar behind the cabin is a Roll/Crash bar. If the truck rolls over, which many of these 4 wheel drive ones that are high off the ground, do if not driven carefully. A roll over would crush the passenger cabin flat and kill the occupants, the crash bar would prevent that and basically protect the heads of the occupants from being flattened. The Windshield and frame above it would be crushed in a roll over.

Gorgeous. If only they could/would make dependable simplicity again. My first vehicle was a '66 Ford F100, gas tank behind the seat so you could hear fuel slosh in case the gauge failed.

I'm from Venezuela, down there Toyota sold The FZJ-71 until 2009, that model has the last version of the 1FZFE better than the one in the 80series, about 30hp more and better torque curve, comes with front coil suspension similar to the 80 series, electric windows, central locks, abs, airbags and more little improvements here and there, that's the peak of the 70 series. After that they went V6 and aren't the same anymore.

I'm South African, and these were, and still are, the farmer's best tool. Even the latest version of these are still very basic. Only difference is ours are almost exclusively diesel powered. There is a gas powered V6 model, but it is extremely heavy on fuel. You still see these vehicles on the road every day and are extremely popular with the off-road crowd. They're just as popular in Australia.
I ❤ them because they're basically almost unbreakable. In the Middle East, they're used for warfare and troop transport through inhospitable deserts. Those boys even mount cannons on them😅
Thanks for showing us, and I definitely share your enthusiasm with it😁👍🏻🙋🏼‍♂️👍🏻👍🏻

I’ve had two modern HZ79s in Nicaragua and there really is no other vehicle that can replace this truck. In the US, I’ve become a 4Runner guy. Hope to own another in the 4.2L diesel, but I’m happy the new generations will still have the naturally aspirated V8. Promising that all of their trucks will not drop down to the 2.x turbocharged engines of today.

I am from South Africa and at the beginning of the year I bought what must have been the cheapest running and driving 75 Series pick up. What surprises me is what parts are still available from the Toyota Dealerships. Things like metal brake lines, bumpers, front grill, steel wheels and lock rings to name a few items I’ve enquirer about.
