As a fellow summer hater, this seems like such a fun experiment. Just to go out, and genuinely try to enjoy what good summer does have.

I've always had summer seasonal depression and hated every moment spent in the heat but last year on my 24th trip around the sun I decided to try and appreciate what the season could offer. I created a playlist full of songs that felt like they brought the season to life, I built a tower of books set in the summer that lived on my bedside table, I went searching for films that captured the beauty of the warmer months, I'd make big jugs of iced tea made out of mixed and matched teas and fresh fruit that I'd drink out of a beautiful glass goblet that matched the pitcher and I went swimming at the local beach at every opportunity. It completely changed everything and for the first time in my life I can say that I'm looking forward to the summer (I'm from the southern hemisphere so it's winter right now which has always been my favourite season but nowadays it doesn't beat the rest by a mile)

I dislike summer intensely; the heat and humidity make dealing with chronic illnesses much worse. Your video was a breath of fresh air and makes me want to spend time outside, doing something fun.

This reminds me of something a teacher told me once about people who hate Mondays. Mondays are equal to 1/7 of your life. If you live to be 70, that would mean 10 years of your life down the hate-train. Instead, try to find the good times within each day and enjoy life.
As a resident of San Diego my whole life, I've almost always had "idyllic" summer weather year round, thankfully not too humid or too hot most of the time. As a child, I detested the sun and basked in the glory of *gloom,* but as I grew older, I began to really appreciate the energy that the sun brings. 🌞 This idea of romanticizing life is a nice way to reframe your brain and, if it works, then it works, and you have way more of your life to look back on with warm feelings (pun not intended, they're just ingrained into my speech now LOL). You romanticized summer beautifully, especially the shots of food 💘

What a gentle and beautiful vlog. The details were so lovely from the outfits to the basket of lemons. And you too of course! The beach picnic in particular could qualify for an anime flashback

Summer is a dry, scorching inferno where I live, and the sun stings wherever it touches. I am just here waiting for autumn so that I can feel alive again haha.

Flowerheart by Catherine Bakewell is a very cute summery book I LOVE. The main characters come across as very Howl's Moving Castle inspired, and it's about a potion maker who can't control her incredibly powerful magic who has to go to an estranged childhood friend to learn to control it.

Hot drink only girl here too, but oh boy has the summer heat this year forced the issue. I've had more iced coffee this season than I have in my entire life (probably). Thanks for sharing your experiences, definitely inspires me to go out and try new activities.

Last summer I made a tradition of every Saturday morning getting a breakfast sandwich and and iced ammericano from my fav cafe and sitting at the good park by the lake for an hour or two, either reading or knitting or just spending time outside. I've continued it this summer, but with less spending at the cafe as I've figured out how to dupe that sandwich. Its made such a difference in my summer enjoyment

I've always hated the summer, and this would be a great idea except that now I've got health issues on top that are influenced by heat so thats awesome but its just an added challenge I guess, I'm gonna try not to let it limit me as much as possible!

  • @NoDecaf7

Glad you were able to find some joy in the heat of the summer months. I spend hours of every day outside during the summer now that I've relocated from the swamps of the Deep South to the mountains of New England. You won't catch me inside unless I'm working or there's rain ☀ Nothing beats the feeling of the warm sun on my "fresh out of the AC" skin.
The worst part about summer is undoubtedly the crawlies. Ants and spiders are just not for me when they encroach on my space.

Totally agree re: summer being the worst! I recommend moving to the SF bay area coast. I live by the ocean 5 minutes south of San Francisco and despite this weekend being a scary heat wave for most of the southwest it's literally 59 degrees right now and foggy! Spooky season weather year round!

I've been looking forward to summer for months now because we've had nothing but grey sky and endless rain since the start of the year. Yet for some reason I can't really enjoy it this year? It's too hot, work is stressfull rn, small health issues ect. I really like this idea of romanticizing the small joys like reading, drinking ice tea, making drinks or snacks, a hang out with friends, wearing a pretty dress. They're low effort and achievable (and fun).
I'm defn going to try making lavender lemonade! Sounds delicious!
I also love the Percy Jackson books and can't wait for the Disney+ adaptation!

Book recommendations (that are lighthearted and summery. The heavier stuff is for fall):
Second Son's Trilogy (Jennifer Fallon) - reads like fantasy, secretly sci-fi, simultaneously action-oriented and philosophical in its examination of societal issues. Lots of strong female characters ranging from incredibly awesome to tragically flawed to respectably evil to 'I want to feel sorry for you but you are legitimately a horrible person so it's very hard'
Lioness Quartet (Tamora Pierce) - girl wants to be a knight, so swaps places with her brother; a coming of age story
Howl's Moving Castle (Diana Wynn Jones) - not quite like the movie in a few key places. Love all her books, this one just seems the most summery.
Enchanted Forest Chronicles (Patricia C. Wrede) - princess runs off to live with a dragon instead of marrying the stupid prince. Her other books are good too.
The Two Princesses of Bamarre (Gail Carson Levine) - timid younger princess goes on a quest to save her older sister
The Goose Girl (Shannon Hale) - retelling of the classic fairy tale

My mum used to get those giant glass jars that have a drink spout on them for the fridge. She’d fill them with water and tea bags and set them outside in the grass and sun and leave them for the afternoon. She’d bring them inside and put them in the fridge and called it sun tea. She said it had to be outside in the sun and plants. It tasted better than just leaving it inside to brew. I don’t know if I could taste the difference but she said she could. 😂

Everything was filmed and edited so gorgeously and even though I can't personally say I hate summer myself, this certainly made me feel very happy and cozy and excited to experience (and maybe romanticize) the next few months with a bew set of eyes, so to speak. Lovely summer vlog. Summer here is hot and dry. I sunburn easy; so for me it is time for long sleeved cotton peasant blouses worn over the lightest of underwear, paired with long silk skirts + saris to drape like a shawl across my neck & shoulders, a wide brimmed hat on my head, with leather sandals on my feet. I'm ready to face the sun; water bottle in my basket, and cane in hand I go out into the wide world.
