- This is a low pressure Aeroponics Hydroponics system I built myself. This DIY project is very simple to build and only took about an hour or two to put together.
The seedlings are grown in rockwool cubes amzn.to/3JCtbq1
Nutrient solution is Masterblend amzn.to/3YGc0YJ and the best way to mix these nutrients is grams per gallon, this is the gram scale I use amzn.to/409reH3
The lights I'm using are T5 fluorescents I purchased on Amazon amzn.to/3JCUIrh
The bulbs I'm using are a combination (50/50) of the 6500k bulbs that came with the above light fixtures and these 3000k bulbs amzn.to/3ZMiman

This is really cool. When it's too hot you could even place the reservoir outside the tent and run the pipe through the built in grow tent holes

Really great system you put together. I'm currently building one in a 27 gallon tote. I like how you setup one pump in the separate bucket to feed 2 grow containers.
Yeah the pump in a separate bucket really helps when checking nutrients, pH, and adding water without disturbing the veggies.

Same approach I started with only nicer quality than mine. The first lesson I learned was the reservoir should be light proof. Green paint worked for me because I had some already and I'm cheap. Your pipe in pipe trick is something I will need to try.

This is a nice setup.
I've been growing with LPA
( Low Pressure Aeroponics )
for over 15 years now.
And I don't mean to be rude.
I would just like to give you and the people watching this video a little friendly advice.
First off your manifold.
You have way to many sprayers. And I have found the green ones work the best.
And then where you have your manifold in your grow chamber.
I sit mine about 2 inchs off the bottom of the grow chamber. This way it keeps the spray from leaking out the grow chamber. And it keeps it high enough for the nute solution to drain back to the reservoir.
What I did when I built my 4 aero systems.
I put my inlet, at one end about 2 inchs up from the bottom of the grow chamber.
And then put a nipple on the outside. I ran my drain line on the bottom in the middle.
If you look inside at most of these tubs, you will see grooves cut into the bottom that drains to the center.
Then I put a nipple on that also.
Then with my reservoir, I put my outlet towards the top of the reservoir. To keep it above my nute solution. Then I put my return line at the bottom on one of the sides.
And now the way I hooked them all together.
They way you have them hooked together, I see nothing but problems.
What i did was I used hose.
There is hose's you can get at a hydro store that is made especially for these kinds of setups. It's a lot softer and pliable than a regular drip system hose. I used half inch.
So I ran a hose from my pump to the outlet. Then I ran a hose from my reservoir to the inlet of the grow chambers. Of coarse I had to put a tee on the hose.
Then I ran a hose from the drains on the grow chambers with a tee and ran it back to the reservoir.
Now the reason I went with hose's is because I wanted to keep my reservoir out from underneath the lights.
So I made my hose's like 8 ' long so I could achieve that.
Plus for any reason that I might have to move my systems. I don't have to take anything apart.
Plus it makes it very simple to change my nutes and clean my reservoir every 2 weeks.
There is a few very important subjects you didn't touch on.
For example its very very important that you keep your grow chambers and reservoirs and your nute solution around 75 degrees.
This will help keep mildew and mold out of your root zone. Hence Root Rot. Which can destroy your whole grow.
Next it's very important to check your pH everyday and your ppms.
There is a thing that us aero and hydro growers call pH drift.
Lets say you are shooting for a pH of 6. Well within 24 hours your pH can shoot up to 8 or down to 4.
Which will lock out certain nutes to your plants. And then it will rise or lower your ppms.
This drift doesn't happen all the time.
Once you find a sweet spot with your ppms. So your plants take up the same amount of your nutes that they want. The drift shouldn't happen.
Your plants will tell you what they want or what they are lacking.
So it's very important that you no exactly how much of each nute you are feeding your plants. This way you will no what you have to add or decrease to keep them happy.
They way I do this is I mix my own nutes. I purchase a powder form of each and measure exactly what is in my mix.
It sounds like it's hard, but it's very simple.
And a lot lot cheaper than buying premixed nutes.
This is the cheapest easiest and fastest way I have found to grow. And the only way I will ever grow, indoors.

How did it fair longer term?
(I suffer from over engineering stuff until it breaks)
I've turned to growing outdoors for now while the warmer weather is here but it worked great all winter. Only minor issue I had was long roots flowing into the water pipe returning to the sump. Might benefit from a baffle of some sort but I just pulled them back to the tub or pruned the roots. It never became a serious issue.

This build looks great. Would be interesting to merge this with the vertical concept by using a drum or something to get a lot more growing points.

If you did the water timing to 30 min on then off. You will get much better results. Also would like to add, an air stone will help get oxygen to the roots . It would be like super oxygenating your water . Great job on the video.

Aeroponics is always the way to go. Love using Aeroponics, there are downside to using it. I have a bit of knowledge in Aeroponics. Been using it for over 4 years now.

The very first aeroponic set up I saw about 10 years ago used the 30 on/30 off timing. I will be transitioning to indoor aeroponic as next year because we are experiencing both extreme heat and severe drought where I live.

Nice little set up.
Basically the same thing I built 10 years ago.
I've been growing this way with LPA ( Low-pressure Areoponics) for 10 years now.
I built my systems basically the same way.
My systems consist of 2, 21 site grow chambers with 1 reservoir. Each system measure 3'x3'. This way I can use 1, 3'x3' LED light over each system.
I have my manifolds at the bottom of the grow chambers. Well they sit 2" off the bottom and spray up. To make sure I get the bottom of the net baskets.
This way all the roots get wet.
I don't see how you are getting the roots in the basket and the parts that are above your manifold wet.
This will slowly cause you some problems. Like bad bacteria and fungi forming.
And your yield will suffer a little. Like 15 to 20 percent.
But for the common gardner or someone just starting with areo. they don't even know that 15 to 20 percent is there cause they have never seen it.
Anyway back to the building of my systems.
The only pvc I used was for the manifold.
Everything else I used hose.
This way I can keep my reservoirs 3 to 4 feet away from my grow chambers so the reservoirs are not directly under the light.
This helps to keep them cool.
Another thing i do different is my drain line is bottom center on my grow chambers. This way ALL the solution drains out in between sprays.
The way you have it set up there will always be 1 to 2 inches of solution in your grow chambers. Then on top of that with your on and off times being so great you are probably getting a build up of solution of 5 to 6 inchs in your grow chambers.
So basically you are running a flood and kinda drain system. And your roots will always be sitting in solution at the bottom of your chamber. Which will result in the same problems as above, plus root rot.
I grow every thing by cloning. I built my own areo cloners. And EVERYTHING I clone roots EVERYTHING.
The trick is to keep your pump running 24/7.
I start getting roots in 5 days. And in 10 days EVERYTHING has roots.
I let them grow roots for a total of 17 days.
Then they get transferred into the areo system straight into my flowering room, 12/12. No vegging.
As you can tell i grow cannabis this way.
These clones, there are 42 of them. They fill 1 of my systems.
I have 4 systems.
Two weeks after these clones were put into 12/12.
I fill another system with 42.
Then 2 weeks later another and then 2 more weeks another.
So now I have 4 systems with 42 plants in each all 2 weeks behind each other.
Now 2 weeks after I put areo system 4 to 12/12.
Areo system 1 is ready to harvest. And I have another 42 clones to take its place ready.
So every 2 weeks I harvest a system, 42 plants.
I've been growing this way for 10 years and I've only lost about 5 plants which was do to me being a dork and forgetting to plug in my timer for my pump.
Speaking of time.
Dude I run my on off times a lot lot lot lower than you.
Try seconds on and minutes off.
It's called Areoponics, not waterponics.
Oh and DARK KNIGHT.
Get rid of that epson and buy a all in one Cal Mag product. That epson is what's killing your grows.
And since your going to buy some cal mag. Buy some aminos to go with it. You won't be sorry.
I get these products from
NPK INDS. all their products are a powder and are easy to use. And they are very cost effective.

Can you explain how you have the drain line on the bottom center? Do you have the system raised so gravity takes the water back to the reservoir?

yes the grow chambers sit up about 6 inchs on some stands I made.
In the bottom center of the grow chamber I put a half inch grommet. Then I put a plastic half inch elbow through that to a half inch hose.

1) When you put the elbow through the grommet, wouldn't it sit slightly above the bottom, allowing a small amount of standing water for the roots to sit in?
2) Do you have any problem with the roots getting into or blocking the drainage hole?

Hey,
I wanted to respond more during my last comment.
But all of a sudden I had all kinds of people coming by my shop.
In regards to the elbow.
I went with a elbow instead of a straight piece, because the hose will go along the bottom of the grow chamber and plus there won't be a bend in the hose.
Just push the elbow down to the top of the groumet.
You just have to be careful if you move that hose.
Because I've had mine fall out a few times when I'm cleaning my reservoir.
Another thing I would express highly is the length of your hoses.
Make them extra extra extra long.
I mean like 5 to 6 times longer than you think you need.
I just went up and measured mine and they are 8' long.
It just makes it easier if you ever have to move your system. And it helps alot when you clean your reservoir.
Because when I clean mine.
I take the hose off the pump in the reservoir.
And hook a longer hose to it and run it to a 5 gal. bucket. But you can't get all the nutrient solution out.
So I pick up the whole reservoir and pour it in the 5 gal. bucket. So with the long hoses I have no problems doing that.
But I still check that elbow.
Just in case.
Because 1 time when I cleaned the reservoir.
I didn't check that elbow.
And I filled the reservoir back up and went home.
Because I don't live where I grow. And I grow upstairs above my garage.
And the next day when I opened up my garage to pull my truck in.
There was all kinds of water dripping down from upstairs.
So for like 12 hours the pump kept coming on but that f#$king elbow had come out.
That was a hard messy leason.
With my reservoir I put a half inch hole near the top and bottom, on one side, not the end. And installed half groumets.
And then a half inch hose from the pump to the top and the drain hose to the bottom.
And I used straight plastic pieces to go through the holes.
I also measured my stands and they 3 and a half inchs tall. And I made them out of 3/4 inch pvc. Just make sure they are level.
Last week I lost one of my mothers. And yesterday I lost my other one.
They were almost 2 years old. And pretty much cloned out.
So tonight I'm going to drop 4 different seeds.
And what I mean by drop is.
I cut a water bottle in half fill it with tap water.
I drop a seed in, if it floats it will sprout in 2 to 3 days.
If it sinks the seed is no good and will never sprout.
So you know right away if your seeds are good.
Just keep them in a dark place.
It works every time.
I've been doing it this way since the 70s.
And I'm the only one I know that doesn't this way.
In fact I think this is the first time I've told anybody this. LMFAO 🤣😆.
Maybe thats why nobody else is doing it.

Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching. I don't have a video about starting seedlings yet (coming soon) but the seedlings are grown in a material called rockwool cubes. They are inert. You can find them on Amazon amzn.to/3aNCyyt. Basically you plant the seeds in the moist rockwool cubes the same as you would soil. Once roots grow out the bottom of the cubes you can transfer them to the grow system. Just be sure not to let the cubes dry out when starting the seedlings but you don't want them soaking wet either. I have my setup in a grow tent (link in the video description), that's the reflective material you see. Before I had the grow tent I used this material amzn.to/2YhCdS4

What is the distance between centres of holes for cups? Isn't it too tight for growing salad?
Incredible video! How did you get the 1/2” tee inside the 2” tee? And how is your manifold connected to the 1/2” pump line?
It was a little difficult to get the tee inside the 2" pipe. I put together the 2" tee and pieces of 2" pipe going to each bin first but did not install the branch that goes to the sump yet. Then I needed to modify the 1/2" tee. The 1/2" tee was a slip (to bin) x slip (to bin) x threaded (to sump). I cut some of the threaded side off the tee which goes to the sump, enough for the tee to be able to slide into the 2" pvc but left enough threads to connect a barbed fitting. After I got the 1/2" tee with 1/2" pipe that extends into both bins into the 2" pvc assembly I was able to thread in the 1/2" barbed fitting (with flexible tubing attached) that goes to the sump. Then finally added the 2" piece of pipe that went to the sump over the 1/2" tubing. I put together all the pipe before attaching any of it to bins or sump. Hope that makes sense, kinda hard to describe.
For the connections of the manifolds in the bins I just ended up making solid connections with pvc and eliminated the barb fittings.

I would switch out the tomato plant for something more productive like chives, regular or garlic variety. Toms need a lot more light and space.
Nice! I am curious about your return line. After water pumps into chamber, how is it brought back to the reservoir? are you using a pump? I had to make sure my grow chamber was higher than the top of my reservoir nute level so gravity could allow the return.
Could you show the harvest you are having right now with the same system, quantity after the harvest in Kgs? How long is it taking to get the harvest through the same plant (roots) after harvest? How much is the energy consumption monthly? Please answer. I am looking to make this too.

The nutrients I use are a 3 part powdered mix (more shelf stable than premixed). It's called Masterblend. It can be purchased on Amazon, here's the link amzn.to/34C1EAf. It has mixing instructions on the packaging for teaspoons but it's best to weigh the nutrient powder per gallon. You can get a cheap gram scale on Amazon as well if you don't already have one. This is the one I use amzn.to/3nucteR.

It's just a kitty liter bucket.. Any 5 gallon bucket would work. I liked that it's square tho. Just make sure the bucket has a number 2, 4, or 5 in the triangle on the bottom to indicate food safe.
How often/do you change the water out?
Need to see how the small pipes run through the large pipes and connect to the manifolds. Is it flexible tubing with a Y piece? I don't understand that bit.

Great video. Did you mention that you do not keep the pump on continuously? You turn off the pump, so the roots don't get water 24/7?
Yes I run it at short intervals. The humidity inside the bins will prevent the roots from drying out. However, you could run the pump continuously.
What size tees and pvc did you use for the manifold?
The manifold is constructed with 1/2” PVC pipe and fittings.

So here we go.
I forgot to add one more important thing.
Your on off time's for your sprayers.
When growing with true aeroponics ( HPA ).
You use misters in your root zone. Because you are trying to achieve a certain droplet size.
Now try and picture some roots. You will see some main roots and you will see some little hair like roots coming off of those.
Those little hair like roots help tremendously with the uptake of nutes for your plants.
Now what happens when trying to grow with LPA is its impossible to achieve the droplet size that is needed, because of the sprayers we use.
So what happens is because of the droplet size of our sprayers. If you leave your on times on to long you damage all those hair like roots. And it keeps you from achieving your potential.
So you want to keep your spray on times very short.
For example spray your roots for 5 seconds every 15 minutes. This will let those hair like roots grow.
Remember this is aeroponics not waterponics.

I do a complete change of the nutrients every month. You could add a drain valve to the bins to facilitate this or just pump the water out. In between water changes I just add nutrient water to keep the correct EC level. If you don't already have an EC meter you can get a cheap one on Amazon like this amzn.to/32H6Uoa

@@DanteAlvaradoFromChile you're welcome. Yeah the EC meter is kind of a must if you do hydroponics. Pick up a cheap pH meter too, they look similar to the EC meter on Amazon. Nutrient I recommend are Masterblend, also on Amazon.

The plastic my bins are made of is food safe. There's a number stamped on all plastic. Two, four, and five are food safe.

Thanks for the great post. Trying to build it myself. One thing not clear. How do you connect the pump to both systems. Did you split the pump output hose into two?
Yes there is a 1/2” T fitting (splitter) on the output line inside the larger 2" PVC return pipe.

Do you put the rockwool in the little basket to grow the seed ?
Yes the seeds are started in rockwool before putting in the net pots. The rockwool is covered by the clay pellets to prevent algae from growing on it
How did you get the Tee inside the 2” tee
The tee was slip x slip x FPT. I had to cut the branch of the 1/2" FPT down a bit. I left enough to be able the thread in the barbed fitting that would be going to the pump. Once the tee was inside the 2" pipe with both 1/2” slip pieces extending into to the tubs I attached the pump line to the barb fitting and threaded it into the tee. Then finished connecting the last 2" pipe to the sump. Hope this helps, kinda difficult to explain. Guess I should have included it in the video, sorry.
What are the sizes of the pipes and net cups you are using? And that blue nozzle that attaches from the inside to the pump, where can i get one?
The white PVC is 1/2” (inside diameter). Net pots are 2". The blue fitting is called a 1/2” MPT by 1/2” barb,.I got it at Home Depot in the sprinkler/irrigation section.

How do you empty the water chamber to change the water???
I have another small pump that I drop in with a piece of tubing and pump it out into a bucket.
Couple of things I noticed. 1 if you had of put your grow chambers higher all the solution will then return to the sump rather the equal out between 3 containers. I didn't think the growth was fast at all. I'm getting faster growth with my water piped from my fish aquaculture system and it's only getting about 3 hrs of direct sunlight a day.

@@PeaceLoveGarden I'll do a vid. It won't be a build but just show what I have. It's a straight RAS aquaculture (IBC tote) that I piped off with stormwater pipe. I used air to lift my water to both oxygenate the water and save energy by using the airpump as opposed to water pump.
Plants are pumping ( mostly lettuce) but experimenting with Asian greens now.

@@PeaceLoveGarden fish are now about 18 months old. Been running the vegies off them for about 6 months. Reason I started running vegies is I needed something to help lower my nitrates and help reduce water changes. My volume of water (1500lts) could support a large amount of vegies but unfortunately I set it up in a spot not intending growing plants ( maybe 3 solid hours sun max). I've just had to make a makeshift poly dome to keep everything warm as it's winter here. Given my success on the vegies particularly lettuce I might reduce food inputs and not go for max fish growth and concentrate on harvesting green and knock the odd fish on the head.
What do you use as a grow medium and feed

great idea, looks like a solid design. I would just lower the lights a bit so the greens arents so leggy.
They were just raised for the purpose of making the video. They're usually much closer to the plants.
How often does this pump run? Continuously or every 20 mins etc?
I do 5 minutes every 15 minutes. Thats what I found works for me. Just don't let the roots dry out. Some methods of hydroponics have the roots completely submerged in the nutrient solution so I don't think it's possible to overeater with this system. For me it was just a matter of finding a good growth rate vs wear and tear on the pump. I didn't see noticeably faster growth from running more frequent than 5 mins every 15 mins.

How often do you check your chemical pH and nutrients levels?
Should check it least once a week realistically, maybe more frequently when the plants get larger and start consuming nutrients or water more quickly. Usually the pH doesn't change unless I add nutrients or water. I sit and watch my plants grow for a little while every day 🙂 so I usually check it more frequently which is probably unnecessary.

Hi, quick question. When putting the PVC through the tub, you didn't have to use any time of seal so water wouldn't leak?
To seal the bulkheads through the tubs I used 100% pure silicone. Not sure if it was absolutely necessary but I did it anyway. Connecting the large diameter PVC pipe pieces I used a small amount of PVC glue (no purple primer). The small PVC pipe running inside the larger PVC is not glued.

I have a system in mind I wld like to create but having done nothing even relatable to this a similar blueprint wld help.
Maybe in the future I could get something detailed put together but with the holidays and such right now I honestly just don't have the time. The video shows most of the details less the pump connections which aren't terribly difficult especially if you use one pump per storage bin and eliminate the sump (middle bucket).

Do mean in the net pots (the little baskets that the plants are suspended in)? No soil in those. I used clay pellets. You could alternatively use gravel or large petite. I wouldn't use soil tho, it will wash out of the net pots.

This is a great set up, I recently made one myself, and got the master blend nutrition. I followed the 12-6-12 gram ratio on the bag. I’m not sure how to calculate the ppms in it. You think you could send some info my way?

Generally the standard Masterblend ratio of 12(MB)-12(Calcium)-6(Mag) works for most things if you don't have a meter. For leafy greens I used approx 10-10-5. I'd also use a ph meter and shoot for ph of around 5.8 or 6. The pH affects how plants can absorb nutrients. You can use products like "pH Up" and "pH Down" amzn.to/3xiOU0q to adjust using a cheap pH meter which can also be found on Amazon as well

Okay awesome, I did adjust my ph after with the Vivosun tester and am about 6.3. I have a variety of pepper plants in there right now and technically they are at the transplant stage. I guess I was wondering like how to adjust the ppm upwards without going to much, you know what I mean?
Also, as it gets later and I want to flower I assume the ppm keeps going up as I change the lighting time back down to 12 on and 12 off

@@jeffreyhurley4735 you don't need to change your lighting (16 hours on) or the nutrient formula at different stages of growth (other than seedlings) if you're growing peppers. If you're growing cannabis I have a solution for that but with pepper plants it's not necessary.
is it possible to grow plants like 15 to 20 days?
From seedling I'm thinking I probably could have gotten a harvest in 20 days if I would have bumped up the lights and nutrient levels sooner. I think 15 days for the initial harvest would be a stretch. Once plants are established if you just cut leaves off and leave the remaining plant to regrow then you will get a harvest every couple weeks.
How deep do you keep the water level?
I manually add water or more nutrients into the sump bucket (where the pump is at) as needed.
how many gallons of water are your running?
It's about 8 gallons in the entire setup with both tubs and the common sump. You really just need to keep the fluid level high enough so the pump can't suck in air. The less water you can use the better in my opinion for less waste when doing water changes.

I have a tower garden. My ph is good. I used a blend of miracle grow, baking soda, and epsom salt. They grew really well for the first week. Then just start dying. It is on a 15 minute on/off timer. Do you know what I may be doing wrong?
So I have researched into which containers are best for an aeroponic system. I saw that the tote boxes are not FDA approved - food safe plastics. Are you not concerned that certain plastics will degrade and be released into the system , and potentially affect the safety of the edible plants you are growing?
Personally I'm not. If you are concerned about such a thing you will probably have a hard time finding large containers or they will be expensive. You may be able to modify this system into a series of food safe 5 gallon buckets but off the top of my head I'm not sure how you'd do it.

I’m not sure how I can do that , I was thinking of making a HP aeroponic system using a blue (food safe) barrel , about 120 litres. How difficult do you think it would be compared to this method you are using?
@@PeaceLoveGarden FYI; i search around for same and landed on polypropylene which is considered food safe via FDA. In "theory" PP plastics are approved for food contact and are considered inert (not an expert in subject by any means). Figure it's a much lower risk at very least.

Does it matter that I use all 360 degree nozzles?
As long as they're pointing down it probably won't matter. When I first had them pointing up it was causing a lot of splashing tho.

When I pointed them down I also raised the entire manifold as well so to be sure and wet the root zone.
When the nozzles were pointing up and spraying threw the net pot, were the net pots full of medium or were they empty?
The net pots were empty but it wasn't just spraying out of the net pots. It was hitting the lid and dripping out around the edge of the storage tub. It would have required sealing the lid or something which I didn't want to have to do. My solution was the easier option.
Does anyone grow tomatoes, beans, peas, corn squash etc this way?
