I think the reason people like the Goldfinger song so much is how much it personifies gold... I mean think about it; it's bold, in your face, exciting, beautiful and dangerous in a sort of cold, blunt sense. the high pitch winds backing it up are almost... seductive, for lack of a better word.
Yes it is incredibly loud, but think about if you could open a door to a vault filled with billions and billions of dollars of shimmering gold bullion... If you could take the emotion you would feel that first moment you looked inside and translate it to a sound, it would be the first 30 seconds or so of that song.

"Ejector seat? You must be joking!"
"I NEVER joke about my work 007!"
That's my favourite Bond exchange to quote out loud.
Yeah, he's cross because he stole GF's woman and then GF stole her back. I think what a lot of commentators miss is that things like this are hardly a positive take on men.
Cinema audiences were finally introduced to the "laser".

Calvin doesn't like the Goldfinger song and requires ear muffs to listen to it....and that goes against the mainstream view...and, natch, Bond hates the Beatles and requires ear muffs to listen to them. Synchronicity.

I am waiting to hear Cal comment on Connery's absolute gorgeous maleness, but maybe he's just not Cal's type. Connery was a good 50% of the sensation of the series: he spoke well, he moved like a panther, he looked believable making love or war, and he did have just enough eyebrow for for a bit of sardonic humour. Connery was the bomb.

Interesting take on the Goldfinger theme. I'm among the large majority that likes it. Specifically for me, some of it has to do with the swagger, all too apt for a gold-obsessed criminal mastermind. But what sells it is the instrumentation, which is much easier to pick up in karaoke versions. And in the best ones, at least if one fills in the voice, it can sound like three melodies at once... even what one might consider the harmony. The muted trumpet's sassy brassy accompaniment to Bassey adds a deliciously jazzy touch, while the strings can lend a strangely melancholy touch for compelling contrast. John Barry knew his stuff, and he was genius at smashing any number of genres together into smashing-good adventuring music. It's like he took Mack the Knife and, especially with the instrumentation, lent it an unabashedly Romantic aspect.

" I suppose she'll be warm for a few hours more" Brilliant Calvin and the Wacky Races theme during the car chase has made me start to see my number one Bond movie in a different light. On a more serious note i rate this as my number one for reasons which i know have been given by many other fans over the years. This was Connery at his best as with Moore it took three movies before he really settled into the role.

Back then each Bond film had a major and unique theme, I'm not talking about music, plus one or two sub-motifs. Thus each entry stood out distinctly from the others. Goldfinger was the gilded Bond movie with spectacular action that took place just a few blocks over from where you live. Also, compared to nowadays, the films were made with an appealing sort of minimalism.

My dear Calvin, I would have thought you’d mention the fact that the girl we see, in the pre-title sequence of Goldfinger, whose eyes reveal the presence of the heavy played by stuntman Alf Joint, is in fact Nadja Regin who also play’s Kerim Bay’s girlfriend in From Russia With Love! But whatever! You do mention a lot of other fascinating information! And I do love your reviews, so please carry on!

OK, one more thing before I stop bothering this video....Bond is pissed off about Jill's death because he's pissed off with himself for letting it happen. Bond let his guard down, became too flippant with Goldfinger and Jill paid the price. Aki's death was an accident; the poison was meant for Bond but she copped it instead by a twist of fate as they were both sleeping.

Calvin, I understand and forgive you for not liking the theme song. It is music style of an earlier time. The theme song and sequence I imagine is probably one of the last parts completed, so it can capture the tone of the completed movie, (no back-up for this, just my own logic). This movie was the biggest Bond movie yet made at the time, so they were looking for the “biggest” theme song! “Goldfinger” was definitely the biggest, loudest, brassiest of all, making it Bombastic to your ears. For us older fans Goldfinger is a classic.

Why didn´t Oddjobs hat decapitate Tilly when it did that with the statue? Funny when the hat flew long way from the statue, but then landed precisely under the statue. Is this Aston Martin supposed to be the same car in Thunderball and then in the Craig movies too? How many times can the same car be destroyed, but still come back totally in great shape again?
Goldfinger says the best line in any of the Bond movies, even better than any Bond ever said.
"No Mr Bond, I expect you to die!". Gert Fröbe did the best role of all the Bond movies and he was even cooler than Bond, yes, even Connerys Bond too.

Calvin - I'm no golf expert, but I think the reason why Goldfinger doesn't putt again after missing is because he and Bond are playing matchplay rather than strokeplay, so Goldfinger's miss means that he loses the hole (he can't better Bond's score). The Gold-paint suffocation scene is Iconic but it makes no sense.
Can you even suffocate because of Painted skin?
Even if you can, why didn’t the victim simply wipe some of the paint off?
And if she was stunned and made unconscious first, how did they paint her exactly? They need to paint the whole skin, that is the point, right? Stomach-side too, not just the back, right? So, wouldnt the paint smudge the sheets (and wear off her stomach?) if she is lying down?
Of all the ridiculous things in bond movies this is no less ridiculous. But it is such a cool scene, people just seem to accept it.

In the DVD commentary of Goldfinger it is said, that the establishing shot of London somewhat matches the one of Miami and I'm like "so it's like poetry, it rhymes" .. damn Star Wars Prequels.
Also, Oddjob is so insensitive. Okay, he knocks out Bond and lets Jill Masterson suffocate in gold paint - one might consider that behavior as quite disrespectful towards their health - but he also leaves the refrigerator door open - as if he didn't care for the environment.

Even though I was only ten years old when I first this movie... I always felt that Bond's total carelessness in just plain stupid!
First of all intentionally doing something to annoy a madman is just plain dumb. Then hanging around after that ( knowing Goldfinger is going to want revenge and he has a staff of cut throats that work for him) is also very stupid. Common sense would have told Bond "You and the girl are now on Goldfinger's hit list" You and the girl are NOT safe in this room. Goldfinger knows exactly where you are and he is coming to get you!!!! Don't you get it!!!!! Inside of me I was screaming "Get out of there Bond and take the Girl with you. Her life is in mortal danger!!!!! If he was smart he should have fled with the girl as far from there as possible. And when they stop to rest at a far off location... Bond should make sure to carefully lock all doors and windows and block the door with furniture so that Odd Job has to make a lot of noise to get in. Plus Bond should keep the lights off. This way if Odd Job can't see where Bond is in the room until his eyes can adjust to the darkness. However, Bond will see him first since the door is the only way in. While Odd Job is busy breaking down the door Bond will be able to fire numerous shots at Odd Job thus killing him!!!! If Odd Job turns on a flash light it will illuminate his own location long before he find where to point it to Bond's location in the room. Bond would have a nicely illuminated target to shoot at!!! Ha! Ha! Bond now could kill Odd Job with great ease. I would have enjoyed seeing Odd Job die like that because that would have made sense!!!

Back in 1964, people actually thought you take oxygen in through your skin follicles for some reason.

I find it very strange that Tilly wasn't the Bond-girl as she is perfecty set-up as it!

Also I think Connery was anxious at the classic scene because there was a guy with a blowtorch lying underneath. His balls could have caught fire!

You are easily one of my favourite reviewers. However, Austin Powers has asked me to make you give his mojo back.

    Hey Calvin,
Once your done re-reviewing Dr. No - Thunderball could you re-review the Timothy Dalton films for 3 reasons,
    1. Your opinion on The Living Daylights seems more positive on your movie ranking then it did on your My Weekly Bond: The Living Daylights Review video.
    2. Licence To Kill is now EXTREMLY more positive in your opinion.
    3. I think you now like Timothy Dalton MUCH more than you use to.
