The thing is... Poof was a great addition to the show. He was enough of a change without being too much. But this whole Sparky, Chloe, theme song mix is a little overwhelming for long-time watchers. It’s like you made a spin-off with the same name.
Sparky was fine, mostly because they didn't retcon the premise of the show to have to insert him into it, they had to rearrange how the show worked in order to make way for Chloe.
There's a lot of ways Chloe could've been worked in naturally, hell off the top of my head, why not have her be a new girl in school. Timmy ends up developing a crush on her, and after a few episodes she finds out about his fairies, and he actually volunteerily shares his fairies with her after finding out how hard she has it. So you get a well established character, AND a character arc for Timmy where he learns to be a lot less selfish.

You know, Alex Hirsch was given opportunity to continue Gravity Falls to a season 3, but he didn't, and the reason season 2 was released in such slow increments was because Disney execs were waiting on him to crack. And as a result, Gravity Falls is good in its entirety. I imagine that Alex stepped on a few toes by telling them no, but he preserved the vision of his the story he wanted to tell. So I don't think every creator has to go down this path. I think it comes down to what each creator really wants, and how much they're willing to bend their work to keep it going and profitable for the company. I'm sure it's not something any creator REALLY likes doing, Butch included, and thinking about it as a creator myself is perplexing. When I have a story, characters, and a solid canon going, I don't want to ruin that. I normally don't start my stories until I know how they end, which usually isn't a problem. It's hard to imagine the pressure of making more content for a company that's paying you well and giving you such a huge platform, and them asking you to add new characters. In a way, your hands are tied. I dunno. It's a lot to think about. It's hard to judge Butch for doing what he was asked to by his bosses, even though they clearly didn't know what they were really doing.
And seeing Butch's most recent decision... I can safely say that the seasons after Wishology (Wishology being the last of the post-Channel Chasers episodes I paid more attention to) were not the fault of Butch, but rather Nick. I feel even happier for him now that he can make his own decisions over his work.
While I do respect Alex's decision, I think the show could've benefited from a third season. Some characters were left undeveloped and/or unlikable (Mabel was an asshole in season 2)
No it was released slowly so that the fans would be hyped that is the craziest theory I have ever heard. For example if you had no food or water for 3 days the water and food you had 3 days later would taste like the best food in the universe. It's kinda like Supply and demand. If they really wanted to continue Gravity Falls they could just hire a new show runner like they did with Spongebob. They own the rights to Gravity Falls they can do whatever they want with it. Also by the time the viewers got to see the episodes they were finished making them. Animation is done a year in advance and is aired on tv next year. I love Butch Hartman's cartoons way more than Gravity Falls the art is better and they are funnier.

My problem with his argument is that you shouldn’t have to add characters to make the show fresh. Try some new ideas or new story lines, instead of adding unneeded characters that are flat and one dimensional to the show to try and spice things up. At this point i think i’d be more beneficial to end the show. I would’ve rather seen the show end while it was good versus seeing it live long and get worse over time.
For me it's not adding in new characters that's the problem. I actually really enjoyed Poof and Sparky, but they didn't need things to be rearranged in the show for them to be included. +icecream hero, that's a really good point. Harley Quinn is a complex and well-written character, but she just started out as "we should give Joker a henchgirl in this episode." And after becoming a recurring character, they did Mad Love. Of course, your character has to at least have something going for them at the start.
What you did with Chloe you could've much more easily do with Tootie. The baby sitter that tortured Timmy making him need fairies? Tootie LIVES with that lady. She needs to share Timmy's parents if anybody does, and she already did in a previous episode. Forcing Timmy and Tootie to work together would've also evolved the established characters and would've had a lot of potential for a breakout character, and she's already a multifaceted, well-developed character. The talking dog is an extremely cliche trope that was clearly forced into the show, when they already had three talking fish and a talking iguana (juandissimo). You want new characters? Why not bring back and flesh out Francis? Why not, if Chloe was absolutely necessary, keep her as an antagonist? She'd make a great antagonist, but instead you redeemed her in the laziest way and taught kids that being arrogant is ok and being perfect is what you should expect. Even a wild card like Mark Chang was better developed and better incorporated into the world than the Mary-Sue. Poof and Foop I actually liked. The world of Pixes and anti-fairies made a great story arc. Going more into the different fairy factions (like the Lawn Gnomes, the Giant Bucket of Acid World, etc.) There were much better ways of mixing the show up than the way it was done. If you're out of ideas, cancel the show, instead of killing its legacy.

Story arc? What story arcs? Fairly Odd Parents never does that every episode is supposed to stand alone. Fleshing out Francis is also a terrible idea when people try to give bullies more depth they often go soft. One of the biggest examples of this is Nelson from the Simpsons now he is a cry baby and no fun.

AwesomeGicks Considering the Chloe debate only lasts about 1:30 minutes out of a 14-minute vid that's otherwise majorly about Star Wars... it kind of is. At the very least, it probably should've had a different title or be cropped down.

Im a longtime fan of fairly odd parents and I recently watched a new episode of Fairly Odd Parents and although many people disliked the changes I felt it was very refreshing. I completely understand the changes and to be honest the first episode with the new girl was fairly entertaining, really liked the plot of their being a fairy shortage :)

Like I said before: Butch, you made a bad choice by including Chloe. If you want the show to remain fresh, then improve the show's writing. The episodes that aired between Channel Chasers and Poof were unfunny, boring, and a chore to get through. The only good episodes since Channel Chasers was the Wishology Trilogy. You should have improved the writing quality of FOP if you wanted it to remain fresh. That was My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic's screw-up; instead of improving the quality of the show's writing over time, they added a flat, one-dimensional, boring character to the roster, and consequently put the original main characters on the back-burner during Season 7. Plus, Chloe COULD have worked with better writing: making her an actually miserable little-girl who could've become a surrogate sister to Timmy; not the flawless Mary Sue we've currently got.

Coming back to the series, I have to agree with many of the complaints about Chloe and such, but I totally understand, Nick just hand to get their hands in the mix. While none of the prequel movies are fantastic, I do find myself more attracted to them than the new movies. I can’t even remember what happened in Force Awakened.

George Lucas was doing star wars (and other projects/running multible companies) for DECADES in a row and the trilogies don't have breaks. A film every 3 years in the trilogies. 77/80/83 then 99/02/05. Three years straight each film and no breaks between film's.
I'm a little sad that so many people hate the prequel trilogy. My personal theory for why this is, (ignoring Jar-Jar because he is just stupid) is that fans who started on the original trilogy were used to what they knew. They were biased from the start and it affected how they viewed all the movies afterwards. However, I started with Phantom Menace and watched them in chronological order. I didn't like the style of the original trilogy but recognized that it was the times. I enjoyed all of them because I didn't have that bias. Also a memorable line from the prequels (that will make me sound evil) is: Master Skywalker, there are too many of them. What are we going to do? Kudos, and God have mercy on your soul, if you actually know what movie that is from as well as what scene it was.
Why do you need new characters when Chloe is just an amalgamation of characters that already exist that you haven't used in years? Said amalgamation being AJ, Tootie, and Remy doing the fusion dance. I mean, I can't even remember the last time I saw VICKY, seems kind of worrying to me.
By the way, (I don't have the real source for this) Jar Jar was originally supposed to be a Sith pretending to be an idiot. There's actually some subtle hints in the prequels that show that. Though even that wouldn't save them.
I thought Poof was a great addition to the show in 2008, Sparky was weird, but i didnt mind it, and season 10 was like the reboot, Poof is gone, ( to school ), we see less of the friends, ( Chester, AJ, Trixie, Tootie, etc. ) and for some reason Sparky is gone for unknown reasons, but Chloe’s addition wasnt super bad, that intro was, but for Timmy to have like a bestfriend for life, was a pretty cool way to end it, also Crockers nephew was a good character too, i liked him

I've never seen Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but my I'm not sure if I broke up with her yet or not, but my either new ex girlfriend or girlfriend at the time, went to see the movie with her parents, and she is a big Indiana Jones fan, and she never mentioned it again. I think she was disappointed.
Butch makes an excellent point and thats why I like for a show to just end when its run its course. Its a terrible thing to say from the viewpoint of those who make a living off of the shows but as a fan, I would rather the show have a nice sendoff then continue to be slowly be drained of the things I love about it.
I get that this video is a few months old and we now now that Butch has left Nick and all, but still...I don't understand all of these comments directed to Butch with opinions on how to make the show better. The prequels did have their glaring flaws, but they did bring a lot of story elements to the table that more competent people have excellent use of, e.g. the Clone Wars.

When Poof was introduced in the show, loved it thought it was a great addition, same with Sparky he seemed cute to me and his interactions with Timmy were equally adorable. But the way they brought in Chloe was forced as hell, there's suddenly some fairy shortage and now kids need to share their fairies. That just screams lazy to me, they didn't want to take the time to make a new fairy character along with Chloe, and if there was ever a definition for a mary sue. Yeah it's her.

Im a longtime fan of fairly odd parents and I recently watched a new episode of Fairly Odd Parents and although many people disliked the changes I felt it was very refreshing. I completely understand the changes and to be honest the first episode with the new girl was fairly entertaining, really liked the plot of their being a fairy shortage :)

Like I said before: Butch, you made a bad choice by including Chloe. If you want the show to remain fresh, then improve the show's writing. The episodes that aired between Channel Chasers and Poof were unfunny, boring, and a chore to get through. The only good episodes since Channel Chasers was the Wishology Trilogy. You should have improved the writing quality of FOP if you wanted it to remain fresh. That was My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic's screw-up; instead of improving the quality of the show's writing over time, they added a flat, one-dimensional, boring character to the roster, and consequently put the original main characters on the back-burner during Season 7. Plus, Chloe COULD have worked with better writing: making her an actually miserable little-girl who could've become a surrogate sister to Timmy; not the flawless Mary Sue we've currently got.

The idea was to give timmy his opposite so that they can argue and she would wish for stuff Timmy would never wish for.She is his foil. Chloe is pretty funny. Copying another character in the show is never a good idea. If she was just like Timmy their would be no conflict.

Coming back to the series, I have to agree with many of the complaints about Chloe and such, but I totally understand, Nick just hand to get their hands in the mix. George Lucas was doing star wars (and other projects/running multible companies) for DECADES in a row and the trilogies don't have breaks. A film every 3 years in the trilogies. 77/80/83 then 99/02/05. Three years straight each film and no breaks between film's.

I'm a little sad that so many people hate the prequel trilogy. My personal theory for why this is, (ignoring Jar-Jar because he is just stupid) is that fans who started on the original trilogy were used to what they knew. They were biased from the start and it affected how they viewed all the movies afterwards.
However, I started with Phantom Menace and watched them in chronological order. I didn't like the style of the original trilogy but recognized that it was the times. I enjoyed all of them because I didn't have that bias.

Why do you need new characters when Chloe is just an amalgamation of characters that already exist that you haven't used in years? Said amalgamation being AJ, Tootie, and Remy doing the fusion dance. I mean, I can't even remember the last time I saw VICKY, seems kind of worrying to me.
I thought that Jar-Jar was great in Clone Wars, but in the prequel films, he was just a waste of space.

I thought Poof was a great addition to the show in 2008, Sparky was weird, but i didnt mind it, and season 10 was like the reboot, Poof is gone, ( to school ), we see less of the friends, ( Chester, AJ, Trixie, Tootie, etc. ) and for some reason Sparky is gone for unknown reasons, but Chloe’s addition wasnt super bad, that intro was, but for Timmy to have like a bestfriend for life, was a pretty cool way to end it, also Crockers nephew was a good character too, i liked him

I get that this video is a few months old and we now now that Butch has left Nick and all, but still...I don't understand all of these comments directed to Butch with opinions on how to make the show better. First of all, Butch isn't going to read these comments from random people to take advice for his show, let's be real. Second, I feel like none of the people who watched this video listened to what Butch even said. The network ASKED him to add these new characters. They didn't say "bring back old characters" or anything like that. They told him what they wanted, and he did what he needed to do to get positive feedback from the higher ups. That's just business. Lastly, it seems no one understands that working on a TV series is a group effort. Butch alone is not to blame for Chloe or any new things people may hate about the show. The show has several writers who decided as a group what Chloe's character would be and all of these episode plots. I hope people will stop putting all of their anger on Butch when he is/was not the sole person responsible for FoPs new direction.
