On Nobunaga: he was a ruthless warlord with eccentric clothes so he makes for a good video game villain. But in Japan he's typically viewed with more nuance as an intelligent tactician who undoubtedly shaped the history of Japan. Nobunaga had many famous battles against Buddhist sects, so when Buddhism became more prominent in the early 1600s there was a lot of anti-Nobunaga sentiment which contributed to his negative image.
And yes the final battle where you fight him in Pokemon Conquest does indeed rule.

@@minnmax Your deepest dive was just the excuse to play this gem (well, the remaster for the first time) again after playing it multiple times as a child, so thanks!

Thanks for choosing this game for the Deepest Dive. I knew nothing about this series before diving into the remaster on Switch. I am in love. Who knew that old school survival horror trappings mixed with an ancient Japanese setting would work so well? I’m probably about 75% of the way through and don’t want it to end.
    Thanks MinnMax!

Onimusha and it's sequel [I sadly couldn't get on with 3] are two of my favourite games ever, but especially of that era. Ever since the Resi remakes I have been bugging friends about hoping Capcom would do the same. Happy for a new entry though, will be a day one purchase for me. Thanks for doing this though, happy memories!!!

I picked up Onimusha Blade Warriors last week. It's basically Onimusha Smash Bros, but I mean that in a good way. Can't wait to play more of it.
Speaking of which, I've been on a Playstation 2 kick recently. I got both the NA and Japanese versions. Quite fitting, since we're approaching the system's 25th anniversary.

I must have played this game more times than I thought, the puzzles were a breeze for me. It was really good to go back to play a survival horror game from that time in gaming.

I'm a little over halfway and really enjoying it. Hoping they remaster the other two ahead of the new game.

Loving this game. Based on trophies I think I’m very near the end. Can’t wait for its return. It takes things I like about RE but removes stuff that can slow it down and make it more tense-and that’s ok. I like not needing ammo to fight.

So about the other moves! You can either kick or thrust by attacking while holding the strafe button (R1) and pushing forward or back on the analog stick. I don't know if the kick is useful but love doing the thrust for enemies that are approaching just to make sure I hit them first.

Bought this game for the deepest dive but noped out when I kept failing the timed tile puzzle. Having to watch the same cutscene over and over killed it for me. Maybe ill try again. Either way more retro deepest dives please!

I did the water puzzle first try; I don't like slide puzzles, so I probably would also be mad if I had to replay it multiple times, but I'm surprised to caused everyone so much trouble. I thought all the puzzles were fun.

WOW I had no idea what this "water puzzle" was. Turns out I beat it first try and thats why it didnt stick with me lol
Side note: the reason Dino Crisis has a dynamic camera is because the environments are fully 3D and not pre-rendered backgrounds (like Onimusha).

Onimusha was the samurai Resident Evil I didnt know I needed way back on PS2. I wish they keep it with the remake/new entry. I didnt like the GOW changes on 3/4 since the horror element got lost but loved the lore continuation

The water puzzle itself isn’t too hard, as a puzzle at least, what I feel is hard is that it doesn’t convey you have to hold the button to slide the pieces so it feels randomly unresponsive. Also, the colouring makes you think the wooden parts are on top and sliding when you’re actually moving the metal parts.
Also shocked that Jacob isn’t a puzzle fiend, I just assumed he would be cos he is usually so thoughtful on games so I assumed it would carry over to everything.
Kelsey’s comment on the manual is a thing ppl really should learn, if you play a PS2 gen or earlier read the manual even if you have to find a PDF online cos the games assume you read it.
I’ve seen too many TH-camrs stuck playing retro games cos they assume the game will teach in-game.
Personally, I miss that era cos it just means you get to play the game from the start instead of taking 1-2 hours every playthru of “move the stick to move” for each game. Heck having the tutorial separate like Lara’s mansion in the early Tomb Raider games would be better than what we have now (also useful for reviewing how to play if you take a long break since it’s hard to remind yourself how to play in modern games sometimes)

I saw a retrospective on the franchise and gained added context for how big a get Takeshi Kaneshiro was. He was apparently a Tom Cruise tier celeb in Japan at the time.
He was also super involved in the game, as he was a big gamer, giving input into the development and doing playtests for the team during development which is why he has the “guest creator” credit

And another fun fact all the demon names in the game are apparently sourced from Hamlet. The game localisation is kinda weird as the ogres are really Oni ( Onimusha means Oni warrior) and the demons are called Genma. I read that later game move to use those terms more

I don't mean to brag, but I got through puzzle rooms without any issue, the sliding tile water puzzle I solved first try. I played this weeks ago and had to look up which one y'all got stuck on.

Don't mean to be a bummer but I've played RE Code Veronica & Devil May Cry on my PS2/CRT within the last couple years and can't help but feel like this is sort of an underwhelming milquetoast middleground, anyone else? Hopefully keep playing. Tank controls ftw!
