    I made an Egyptian-type lock out of a single 2x4. This style of lock traces back to wooden locks found in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. It should be noted that most Egyptian locks seem to have the key enter the deadbolt rather than the separate entrance seen here. The separate keyhole seems to be more popular in European examples but the basic concept is the same. I was fascinated to find out that lock picking for this pin tumbler lock is similar in concept to many modern locks. If you would like to learn more check out:

    You forgot to encode the key and lock. You set the depth of cut of the deadbolt and key the same in all slots. That's like setting a combination lock to 111.

      Well, considering the fact that with this type of lock, lifting a pin to a height greater than what the key's corresponding position is set would still result in the pin being in an open position, it really doesn't matter. In other words, you can raise all the pins to their maximum height and it will open the lock regardless of what the lock and key are supposedly keyed for.
      Now, if you wanted to make it so that only the correct key (or pick position) could be used, you could extend the pins past the bottom of the bolt and put additional sections that would engage the bottom of the bolt if raised too high.
      But, remember, this is a wooden lock... It can be easily defeated with a saw blade or hammer... It serves no protection against people, other than to "keep honest people honest"... The one thing wood does provide though is a way to model possible lock designs in a larger scale so that you can easily / cheaply try out possible designs before making them smaller and from metal... If you come up with a good design, you could even create a metal model of the same thing with 1/2" square steel bar and braze the various pieces together. Let's see how much fun BosnianBill has with one of these where he needs 2 lbs of pick pressure on each pin... :)

      This is authentic to the original Ancient Egyptian design. It's the oldest known lock in history, so the art of lockpicking hadn't actually become a thing yet. Unless you could get the key to copy it correctly, you probably had no recourse except physically breaking it.

      @@CurmudgeonExtraordinaire this lock can keep out mischievous people that aren’t sure they want to break stuff and make noise. I like that a friend cant claim he locked himself out and have a locksmith come and let them in or have a key made as I had a friend do once.

      @@6mdm That locksmith opened himself or herself to a lawsuit. You have to give a valid ID to get a car unlocked. Actually I think I had to provide the insurance policy to the car to get my car unlocked on a extra cold sleet and snow day. Now I have a key in each front pocket of my pants. I don't need anymore $150 dollar lessons.

      @@genespell4340 he was an exroomate that wanted to use my apartment when I was out of town.I would come home and all my towels would be in the laundry and finally I noticed after being away for weeks that my shower was wet. I caught him on a hidden camera. This is when I realized the only way to be sure no one is in your home while away is hidden battery cams. Security systems can be defeated pretty easy especially if they have a friend in the business. But a camera they don’t know is there is the best defense.

    This is super cool! Simple but complex. I notice that one needs to pull the key up to trigger the device. Would it be possible to build the key in such a way that turning it would push the blocks up sort of like a cam shaft? The lock would needs to be thicker overall or the key more skinny and oblong as would be trading depth of key going into height as the key is turned to get the block to move up. Would be super neat! Cool build already though!

      @ursusworkshop549  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love the cam shaft idea - way more elegant than the simple key.

      I've seen variations on this lock used in older houses in my country, we refer to them as puppy-locks (translated to English here for your reading pleasure) btw, though most of these locks use a metal key.

    • @CurmudgeonExtraordinaire
      @CurmudgeonExtraordinaire 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Rovarin -- One of my wife's friends has a dog that can open the front door. It will keep pawing at the door knob or moving it with it's mouth until it turns and the door can open. She ended up having to put some sort of shield around the door knob so that it would rotate, but would not allow the actual knob to rotate. One of these types of "locks" would have also worked, so it really would be a "puppy lock". :)
      My suggestion was to put livestock electrical charger attached to the door knob and a conductive plate in front of the door. After the first couple of zaps, the dog would stay away from the door. She didn't particularly like that idea though...
