I do too. I love his stuff and he has A LOT of great points. He is in many ways of voice of reason we very much need. Especially on free speech and critiquing identity politics. The only issue I have with his style is that sometimes he shuts people down with his humor. During his talk at Berkeley, He himself talked about how we need to appeal to that emotional desire for goodness in many liberals by telling them that many of their ideals are not only impractical unattainable fiction, but also morally wrong. It's morally wrong to use the gun of government to force your way of thinking on people unless they are causing ACTUAL harm. Continuing on that logic, it's also important to not shut people down if you truly intend to convince them. Don't people typically kneel to show respect? Prayer? Moments of silence? I feel like this is a way for some players to show respect for their country while simultaneously trying to shed light on an issue they think is important. Remember your parents' wise advice to try and step into someone else's shoes to see their perspective? I think that is extremely important in this case, as both sides of this issue have valid perspectives on what the flag represents to them individually. On one side, the flag is a representation of the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives for this country. On the other side, the flag is a representation of certain democratic principles of the United States: freedom of speech, diversity and equality, etc. Just as with any other important issue, the explanation/solution is NEVER black and white.

I do too. I love his stuff and he has A LOT of great points. He is in many ways of voice of reason we very much need. Especially on free speech and critiquing identity politics. The only issue I have with his style is that sometimes he shuts people down with his humor. Really this by-product is only a problem in particular situations (a fact I am sure he is patently aware of). Sometimes it's just a bit too visceral and in this case it's simply rather ironic.
I don't disagree with you about the reliance on emotionalism. Yet even Ben himself has said that simply beating bleeding hearts over the head with logic doesn't typically work. During his talk at Berkeley, He himself talked about how we need to appeal to that emotional desire for goodness in many liberals by telling them that many of their ideals are not only impractical unattainable fiction, but also morally wrong. It's morally wrong to use the gun of government to force your way of thinking on people unless they are causing ACTUAL harm. Continuing on that logic, it's also important to not shut people down if you truly intend to convince them. Yes, sometimes they need a hard dose of reality but if that's all they get they'll never bite. Sometimes a spoon full of sugar does help the medicine go down ;-)

Don't people typically kneel to show respect? Prayer? Moments of silence? I feel like this is a way for some players to show respect for their country while simultaneously trying to shed light on an issue they think is important. Remember your parents' wise advice to try and step into someone else's shoes to see their perspective? I think that is extremely important in this case, as both sides of this issue have valid perspectives on what the flag represents to them individually. On one side, the flag is a representation of the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives for this country. On the other side, the flag is a representation of certain democratic principles of the United States: freedom of speech, diversity and equality, etc. Just as with any other important issue, the explanation/solution is NEVER black and white.
