Eventually all this went digital using memory chips sometime in the 80's. I worked for a large company as the resident telco tech and we had a number of Nortel digital announcers for various messages. They cost thousands of dollars back then. I recently picked up two of them at a surplus house for $6 each! They still work.
ill bet you that there's a bunch of those incredible machines sitting in a few warehouses around the country begging to be restored to there original condition with a little TLC
In the UK, BPO provided the service. In the US, several large telephone companies did the same thing. This is why they didn't have advertisements, although some had ads for their own company. Small town machines, like the one in the video, played advertisements to cover the cost of providing the service.
There will be a machine simular to this one running at a small telephone museum in Maitland, Florida soon. I was down there recently to help get it repaired.

It breaks my heart that only seven machine still exist!
