    I really like your use of alternative methods and materials! This one makes a lot of sense! The stores produce lots of these which keeps the cost down, and the recycled part just makes things all the better! Good job Opie!

    I was online shopping for grow bags and a light bulb came on. I noticed that the grow bags look just like the recycling bags that I keep in the trunk and never use. I wondered if I can use those to grow my vegetables so I search for a video and bam here is your video, so thank you very much. I will be using my recycling bags. finally I can get them out of the trunk of my car 😂

    I just bought a couple of the collapsible square containers at Dollar tree. The ones that are flimsy and are for closets. They come in different sizes. 1.25. I'm anxious to give them a try this year. Great video! We all need to grow food and save money.

    Darn I thought I was the first genius to think of this haha! I am actually somewhat new to gardening and have been trying to think of more cost friend alternatives like this. I was thinking of seeing what I can come up with using a a canvas throw cloth I never ended up needing to use when I painted my living room. I'm not sure how well canvas material will hold up but I have some scrap wood I can use for structural support. And earlier I was going through my closets and under the beds trying to get a donation pile going and I have a couple of old suitcases I was going to donate ....just your standard fabric zip up suitcase on wheels with the extending handle.....and I thought hey....I think I can make that work actually!! I'm a renter and only have a small narrow porch/deck I'm working with and a small little pathway with some stairs that I'm going to have to get real creative with! Videos like these are motivating and fun!!

    Here in Washington state all the Walmart stores have discontinued carrying their reusable fabric grocery bags. The reusable bags you buy at Fred Meyer or Safeway to take your groceries home in are sealed to make them waterproof. While you could use them by punching holes in the bottom, you don't get the air pruning effect that you get with the Walnart bags or commercially made fabric grow bags. I recently purchased some 7 gallon commercial grow bags off of Amazon, and they are made from a much heavier material than the Walmart bags, which should make them last for several years. I recently bought a 10 pack of them on Amazon for $13.99, and they came with a decorative rainbow pattern printed on them. I'll be uskng them mainly to grow my herb garden in and some smaller varieties of peppers like cayenne, and small bush tomatoes like Early Girl Bush and Better Bush tomatoes.

    What does "self-pruning bag" mean?

    • @BrewCityGardener
      @BrewCityGardener  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I should have worded it differently. I actually meant "air pruning". It's where the roots run to the edge of the grow bag and stop versus growing around and around becoming root bound. The bags are breathable so the plants know to stop growing roots when they reach the outer edge of the bag just as they would in nature. It makes for a far healthier root system and vigorous growth overall. Give it a try!

      why ? Corona should not be a issue with bags, put them in the sun , then flip, or in the dryer??? The virus is killed by sun light, and you can spray them with lysol, lysol should not hurt plants just spraying bags---- the virus can only live on surfaces a short time. if you wanted you could soak them in a bath of dawn, lift them up , let them dry outside, they are then virus free . Why would they have virus?

    things like
    bpa and mildew/ultraviolet/stuff in the plastic which heat will release into the water and up into your plants
    not good-

      This varies greatly from region to region. Some localities are "more free" than others. Even if you cannot find reusable bags locally, you can usually find them at online retailers and resale/auction sites. There are several listings on eBay and Amazon that are comparable.
      Good luck and happy gardening!

    I have seen them, but you have to watch which you get. Some have plastic lining which makes them waterproof so they wont leak

      and some AREN'T UV STABILIZED and fall apart and add 'micro-plastics' into the soil (and, ultimately, I imagine, into your veges grown for food)
