The famous Linn LP12 was a virtual clone of the original Ariston RD11. Ivor T. having worked for Ariston carried this design over to his new company (Linn) with the same machined parts manufactured by Castle engineering and also a few cosmetic and detail changes. A law suit was launched which Ariston unfortunately lost and so changed their design somewhat in later models.
I think you would get a more accurate rpm reading if you placed a light bowl upside down over the spindle and centered your phone on top. At least I did. I think the phone's weight is just enough to cause some wow and flutter if it is off to one side.
