For us in India, this movie was a masterpiece. And I am so glad that Rick used the same word to describe it. I am so proud of our cinema and actors like Shahid and directors like Vishal Bhardwaj.. It just proves that if harnessed properly, there is unbelievable talent we have to offer. I am so so glad you guys did a review on this.. That was the most in-depth and knowledgeable review of this movie. Although it’s one of my favorite movies, I am starting to appreciate it more now. You should definitely check out Omkara and Maqbool.
I watched the 4-5 hour version with kenneth as the lead from the 90s after watching haider because i just wanted to know the actual play in a way that i could understand. I understood it all but i still couldn't shake the feeling that haider, an india movie that mot many people actually know about outside of Pakistan and india, is the best adaptation of a Shakespearean play ever made. But the brilliance of this film is that while it succeedes so hard in the adaptation of Shakespeare in a contemporary setting, it also manages to stay true to what it was trying to accomplish. It used Shakespeare as a means to comment on kashmir. I think that's just fantastic. The situation of Kashmir is the most closest to home to us Pakistanis and indians and seeing an indian director (i am Pakistani) portray the tragedy of Kashmir in the most honest way possible was the most heart warming and heartbreaking thing possible. Everything he was commenting on from how the rebels are treated, how people are mostly concerned with entertainment which was brilliantly portrayed by putting captors in the shadow of a projector, and the two characters you didn't like (which was the director commenting on the influence of mainstream media in people's minds by the way. That's why they are over the top. They were supposed to comment on the over the top drama of Bollywood), i could relate to it all. I have never felt this way about Shakespeare before. Ever. I always felt Shakespeare was something i would never be able to understand due to his use of language but this film made me believe otherwise.
Rick taking a deep breath before starting was the cardio for this review 😂😅. Thoroughly enjoyed the review. Thank you so much for keeping the request of your stupid bebbies. 😘
They pronounce Chutzpah (without C silent) as that in film cause Chut is a slang word in Hindi (pronounced with C in loud) and also has its multiple derivatives like Chutiyapa. The characters were having a laugh at the joke, i.e. their similar spell in word but entirety different meaning language wise...
Rick I absolutely love how passionate you are while talking about theatre and movies. I'm in awe of you and it's such a privilege hearing your profound thoughts on our movies. Keep doing what both of you guys do. We love yall!
Great Analysis.... I love it. I did my BA and Master in English literature and we did study Shakespeare works. I love the way you understand Shakespeare and break down each scene of the film in detail analysis.
The two stupid characters in Haider were intentionally portrayed to be stupid and were inspired from a Salman Khan movie "Hum Aapke Hain koun". Vishal bhardwaj himself stated this in an interview as he wanted to show the impact of Bollywood on the people . Salman Khan has a huge fan following in Kashmir and those characters symbolises the impact movie had on them. Although it was a secondary nature and primarily being the two witch
Omg! Yasss...Lin ❤ I actually thought of Vishal Bharadwaj when I first listened to the Hamilton album when it came out. I would love to listen to your extended review of this movie because I do know that you have much more to say! Feels so good to find people who can appreciate the genius of Mr. Bharadwaj, especially in his Shakespearean trilogy. Great job! 😊💫
YESSSSS - been waiting for this movie review. Delicious!! It was so satisfying to hear both of your reactions, I felt like I was watching it again. Hamlet gave me so much grief in high school because I legit couldn't finish a giant 22page analysis on him (the character) in time for my deadline (had to get an extension) because I kept going in circles and struggled to grasp it. Also, yes, Vishal Bharadwaj is a genius. He is so underrated.
Thank God we did Merchant of Venice in high school and it was a breeze but then i had to do Hamlet in College for my Honors and i have cried tears of Frustration going around in circles so i get what you mean.
@Rick I'm so happy that Haider has touched you deeply knowing how emotionally connected you're with Hamlet. It's my best film of this decade... A masterpiece in every level. Please watch Omkara (Othello) and Maqbool (Macbeth) from the same director. No other film maker in India understands Shakespeare better than him.
Phenomenal performance of Pankaj Kapoor(Shahid Kapoor's father) in Maqbool(adaptation of Macbeth by Vishal Bharadwaj) is by far one of the best acting performances in Bollywood
If you liked Haider, then you must definitely watch MAQBOOL (adaption of Macbeth) from same director! It has stalwart actors like Irffan Khan, Tabu and Pankaj Kapoor in it. The movie is simply mind blowing. You could drop Omkara (Othello adaption)- actors don't have same range of versatility and it ended becoming more of 'masala' movie as per my opinion. But Maqbool is just awesome and must watch.
What an awesome review guys, I love movies but don’t always understand the nuances of movie making. This review was such a revelation that I will go back and watch the movie again and I was waiting for Rick’s review with bated breath, knowing how much he loves Shakespeare and Hamlet. I love Vishal Bhardwaj movies so it was so wonderful to see Korbin and especially Rick appreciate it. I thought you guys may find flaws in it and was pleasantly surprised at such a positive review.
I kind of wish I could have watched this WITH Rick as he was watching it and watch my own emotions play out in him. I am as obsessed with Hamlet as he is and I was as proud (as an Indian) and blown away by this adaptation (as a theater geek), and I am constantly amazed at how Rick keeps being able to cut straight to the core of all the brilliance of the good Bollywood movies, DESPITE the language barrier.
18:50 that's a great point to be noted and I'm sure that's what the director intended as well bcos the conflict in Kashmir which is the backdrop of the movie was instigated and evolved as a result of nut case British actions like the partition and the resulting instrument of accession . And so he's implying that such actions could only come out of the insane asylum that 20th century England was !
I liked Haider more than peers. I felt somewhat you felt in terms of precision of screenplay. Good to see uh to be there with me. The director Vishal Bharadwaj is basically inspired by polish director krzysztof kieslowski in general and gives a poetic touch to all of his movies.
@ricksegall I just love the passion that you possess for your craft there is honesty there and that's what is inspiring and separates you from the other reviewers.
Lol I love that you loved this film so much. The only thing is that Korbin didn't pronounce Shahid Kapoor correctly, but hey we've got a couple more amazing films from him that you'll eventually watch to get it right lol
I'm so happy you loved this movie as much as you did. It's the only movie till date that I watched five times in the theater. Just couldn't get enough of it. You mentioned everything. Something that really moved me too was the sighing presence of Kashmir and her grief. Also Vishal Bharadwaj's comment on the unreal and disconnected cinema of the time (the song video playing in the background while Haider and Arshi look for his father). The naming of the two Salmans is also pure genius in what it says about their identity or the lack of it. Shahid has been one of the most versatile actors of Bollywood for sometime now. At times I feel he shouldn't have done a character like Rawal Ratan Singh in Padmavat. I mean I know it turned out to be a huge hit. Still I just wish the character had been better backed by writer / director. It's almost a waste to have an actor of Shahid Kapoor's calibre and then not use him to anywhere close to his potential. Anyways, he just keeps getting better with every film. Fantastic review! Thanks
This is one of the best review of Haider I have seen so far ..it is one of my favorite bollywood movie of all times and Rick you are freaking genius !!
I'm so glad you watched a golden movie. Shahid kapoor is a very dedicated method actor, having some really good acting genes, with parents also being theater stalwarts in their time.
Man, I enjoy so much watching someone gushing about the things they know and like up to the point of getting choked up by the beauty of the things they love! Rick, you speak my language here! Thank you!

I was looking forward to this review for long. When you started it, I sort of, started feeling nervous coz it was beginning to sound like you did not like it. Loved your analysis. This movie is truly a gem.
I am a big fan of Shahid. Every time I saw him in an interview I just knew he wasn't simply a handsome actor. He was naughty and could be crazy.. He just proved me right!
"Macbeth" was made into "Maqbool", starring Irrfan Khan and Tabu "Othello" was made into "Omkara". "Haider" completes the trilogy by the same director, Vishal Bhardwaj I felt Omkara was closer to Shakespeare than the other too. You should watch it. P.S. "Ram-Leela" by Sanjay Leela Bansali is his take on Romeo and Juliet.
Love LOVE this review!!! Thank you for reminding us of the nuances of the story . I saw this movie when it was first released and your review makes me want to rewatch now.
The problem is that bollywood hasn't sent out so many of it's brilliant films for an oscar nomination or a foreign film festival whereas it's winning endless awards here in India and then the foreign audience doesn't get to experience it.

Your reviews are a realization for the general mass of India as to how underappreciated their own work of art is. Thank you instilling the feeling of pride. Your reviews are not only motivating they are extremely educational as well. Keep up the great work! It leaves us hungry for more.🙏
Well said @Karishma Tiberwala. Totally agree with you.
I have probably shared this to half of my contact list already.. 😊 love you both..
Wow......never thought I would cry on a review. Thank you guys for the awesome review and your admiration for good movies. I feel very happy and proud of our films.
Bitupan Borah You should be proud. 🙏🏼❤️
MAQBOOL PLEASE!!! Pankaj Kapur, Irfan Khan and Tabu kill it in every scene they are in... the angst is palpable!!!
That was the most in-depth and knowledgeable review of this movie. Although it’s one of my favorite movies, I am starting to appreciate it more now. You should definitely check out Omkara and Maqbool.
Sumana61440 😊
Guys this was your best reaction ever. So informative. Thank you for what you’re doing ❤️
Monika Jain Truly our pleasure 🙏🏼
I like your playlist "purple" .
Hii
Love how genuine Rick got during the review. Korbin just sat back and listened and made sure he drove the review to the end smoothly
Shahid won best actor for Haider. He will be super happy to see this reaction. Hope he sees it.
I was like..."This man is a genius and if something similar was to be made in India....it would definitely be Vishal". #ham4ever ❤ Glad you guys saw the movie. Vishal is one of the best and underrated directors. And your review is amazing. That's what I love about this channel. You always give honest opinions and genuine reactions.
Watch "Kaminey" it's shahid kapoors one of the best performance .
What an awesome review guys 👍👍😊 Rick, I respect your passion and your knowledge, esp of Shakespeare's work, and your domain expertise about the motion picture arts, you breathe so much of your passion and knowledge that, we the viewers, are more richer after watching all your review videos...
Saying I loved your reaction isn't enough. Makes me proud and humble at the same time. Proud that we could offer you this masterpiece and humble because you were able to show me some aspects of the film that I had not appreciated enough. Thanks again.
Anindita Banerjee Truly our pleasure 🙏🏼❤️
I would love to listen to your extended review of this movie because I do know that you have much more to say! Feels so good to find people who can appreciate the genius of Mr. Bharadwaj, especially in his Shakespearean trilogy. Great job! 😊💫
This is one of my fave film and I'm so glad you saw it! Shahid Kapoor won the best actor award for this film 👍
It was intentionally pronounced as chutzpah because in hindi chut means c**t.
Rick. I appreciate your passion man! Lots of love for you.
Came back here after Korbin Singh's amazing recreation of the Haider monologue!
Glad you watched the best of the trilogy. Now complete it by watching Maqbool (Macbeth) and Omkara (Othello) as well - all by the same director.
Just proves that brilliance transcends all cultural and language barriers. Happy to see you guys enjoy the magnificence of Indian cinema.
Kashmir is to Vishal Bharadwaj what UP Bihar is to Prakash Jha. Their comfort and empathy lies deeply embedded in the world they create.
Phenomenal performance of Pankaj Kapoor(Shahid Kapoor's father) in Maqbool(adaptation of Macbeth by Vishal Bharadwaj) is by far one of the best acting performances in Bollywood
My god!! I too have to watch this film again... And I must read Hamlet.
Idk why but i keep coming back to this video several times. Reminds me of why i like this channel more than others
Of course Rick can talk years about Hemlet 😄 Best review of this movie so far👍
I watched this video the 3rd time. I liked this intro animation the best, such a calming sound with a boom
K.K. Menon is a great actor and you need to take a note of him
I kind of wish I could have watched this WITH Rick as he was watching it and watch my own emotions play out in him.
Rick was so emotional during his review that he almost made me cry 😞😞
Thanks
I was getting emotional honesty watching Rick talking the whole review 😅
I m so happy. Thank you so so much. He is one of the very best that we have. But somehow he gets underrated all the time. Thank you for this review. 😇
Didn't get a notification but luckily I was on insta and saw Rick's post that the review was here 3 minutes after he posted it so I came straight here
Sanya Tanwir 😊👍🏼
This is one of the best review of Haider I have seen so far ..it is one of my favorite bollywood movie of all times and Rick you are freaking genius !!
I'm so glad you watched a golden movie. Shahid kapoor is a very dedicated method actor, having some really good acting genes, with parents also being theater stalwarts in their time.
Man, I enjoy so much watching someone gushing about the things they know and like up to the point of getting choked up by the beauty of the things they love! Rick, you speak my language here! Thank you!
Daria Zhuleva 😘
You two guys really know a lot about movies, and I love listening to you. It might not seem so in this review, since the movie was a masterpiece, but I am glad that you don't hesitate while criticizing anything you don't like. Thank you, and keep on these authentic reactions
anchored1 always 😘
Loved your reaction!! Not only I am happy that you are enjoying our art, I am also learning so many new things, new perspectives from you guys. Love you guys. Stay stupid! ❤️❤️
Loved the review.... Kk Menon is a great actor on par with Irfan Khan.... Btw chutipass was intentional
I was looking forward to this review for long. When you started it, I sort of, started feeling nervous coz it was beginning to sound like you did not like it. Loved your analysis. This movie is truly a gem.
Hahaha the day begins ...with ur reactions ....n here comes one more ....😍😍😍😘😘
Rick is my soul animal. The honour i felt when directing and writing hamlet for my school play, Haider was my guiding force
Watch "Corporate" and "Life in a metro" for KK.
I am a big fan of Shahid. Every time I saw him in an interview I just knew he wasn't simply a handsome actor. He was naughty and could be crazy.. He just proved me right!
"Macbeth" was made into "Maqbool", starring Irrfan Khan and Tabu
"Othello" was made into "Omkara".
"Haider" completes the trilogy by the same director, Vishal Bhardwaj
I felt Omkara was closer to Shakespeare than the other too. You should watch it.
P.S. "Ram-Leela" by Sanjay Leela Bansali is his take on Romeo and Juliet.
Guys watch "Omkara" based on "Othello" and "Maqbool" based on "Macbeth" by the same director . Both the movies are masterpiece
Yes. It's Macbeth. By the same director. Also staring Pankaj Kapoor ( father of shahid)
Tabu and Irfan Khan are also in that movie .
Love LOVE this review!!! Thank you for reminding us of the nuances of the story .
I saw this movie when it was first released and your review makes me want to rewatch now.
Savita .Sriram 😊😘
The problem is that bollywood hasn't sent out so many of it's brilliant films for an oscar nomination or a foreign film festival whereas it's winning endless awards here in India and then the foreign audience doesn't get to experience it.
@@humamumtaz2719 somebody has to start. Some Indian movies have gotten an oscar. No harm in trying.
Can we have a few videos where Rick talks about his theatre experience? I would personally love to see his take on some of the popular works here as well. It's great how a former student and teacher pair is working together like this now. Goes to show how great you lot are about setting an example for a lot of people out there, teachers' can be friends with their students after graduation. Great review guys! Cheers!
Please watch " Shaurya" movie...it has the same actor KK menon with one of his best ever performance and review it.....its mind blowing please...
WOW! Now that's some real passion Rick!😱💗🙏
Shaggy Bombay 😊😘
Good Movie. Great Review. Haven't seen the full review but I know.
Maqbool (An adaptation of Macbeth) and Omkara (Adaptation of Othello) were both well received by the critics. Omkara in particular garnered some interest west of India. Must watch! Absolute masterpieces by Vishal Bhardwaj.
WOW! Such a brilliant review from Rick! I wish, Vishal Bhardwaj would watch this review.
Your reactions are absolutely spot on 👍

Thank you so much for this great analysis against original Hamlet
