Honestly i'm impressed with this version. The guy who did this is ACTUALLY singing and is still pulling all these different impressions and exuberance of Robin Williams. I applaud this version.
This is a such a wonderful rendition of this song and I think it is a shame that people are comparing it to Robin William's version instead just appreciating the two completely separately. The thing I don't think people are grasping is that these are two entirely different versions of the same song with different goals and different target audiences. The movie version is an animated film geared towards children and rather than performing something that will be portrayed onstage, Williams was doing a voice over. That automatically dictates a different kind of performance and ability. The actor in this version however is performing for Broadway which means a larger target audience age wise and a much different type of performance where the goal is to put more emphasis on the musicality than the impressions/voices themselves. That's the difference. Both performances are equally brilliant and commendable and I don't see why people should be arguing about it. I really think Robin Williams would be proud of this guy.
I agree with you completely. I was watching a documentary about the show and the show lamps didn't work because of this number and the carpet. But it worked in the long run since the show is up.
I saw this with my kids last month on Broadway. This was one of the best musical numbers I have seen on the stage. The Genie put everything into this song and deserved every second of the clapping and cheering that he got. To see the smiles on my kids faces was worth every single penny.
I absolutely love this version of friend like me. Aladdin is one of my favorite Disney movies. Robin Williams did such a great job with the character of the genie. Y'know what would be a dream come true?? If Robin's spirit or ghost or something came to haunt the hell outta everyone. (In an endearing way, of course.)
I sang this for an audition once Didnt get the part i wanted but it was still one of the best auditions ive done Still waiting to be able to use this song again
Baston that's ok but I get really annoyed..... "I" is "I went to a place." I'm is describing YOU so "I'm German" would be grammatically correct.... Just trying to help you out ♥️
I've been a fan of James since I saw him play Bobby in a filmed performance of Memphis. I love him as Bobby and Lance. Got a great voice, teddy bear like psychic and a comic relief to the max.
Surprised James Monroe Iglehart won a Tony for playing the Genie and singing this song so wonderfully. And I was most surprised to see the Genie sing some Disney classics during the show. It's not the same as Robin Williams' but it's more jazzy and long.
Have you seen it in person? The biggest focus of this song is flashy choreography and amazing special effects. The song itself seems low key in comparison.
Did you know the stadge show of this has been fillmed think it is going on disney plus at some point but they used the west end theater for fillming it
Me too but I'm going to wait for the national tour to come to either the Pantages in Hollywood or Segerstrom Center in Costa Mesa. However, Segerstrom doesn't have Aladdin on their 2017-2018 season schedule.
Wow. This man has such incredible talent. When I first heard Aladdin was going on Broadway I was mostly concerned who would play Genie. I'm so glad they chose him. Robin Williams would be so proud. :)
I saw this play a few months back when I was in London and I tell ya this scene and this scene alone was worth the price of admission! Now that the musical is coming to my hometown in San Diego I think I'm gonna see it again just to see this live one more time!!
It's the best during the other Disney songs part! And the tap! And just the rest of this song is pure amazing!!!! This is a must listen to! So glad I get to see it in July!
I like the band orchestration in this version. It's got a lot more of that big band, 20s era jazz and then the combo of other genres. And of course poking fun at other Disney songs like Beauty and the Beast and The Littler Mermaid. I think Robin Williams would approve of this rendition with pride.
I actually think that the big band orchestration helps all of the Aladdin songs. "Prince Ali" is much better in the big band style we have in the musical, compared to the film.
I love both versions but I must say I prefer Robin Williams' interpretation of the song because he put much more attitude & humor into it. He didn't focus on his singing as much as he did creating the character. But this actor definitely did it justice! I think Robin would be perfectly happy with it. ❤
+Kaitlyn Massey lol of course he didn't focus on singing because he wasn't a singer. & seeing how this is a Broadway version, the singing takes precedent.
+Morrysn Dolling yes, I understand that. but this guy could've done a lot more with the character. Robin really put a lot into giving the genie very specific character traits and giving him personality. I feel more of a connection with the character from Robin than I do from this man (not saying this guy did a bad job at all! he did great, I just don't feel the passion from him as much as I did from Robin).
shawna0383 never said that this guy did a bad job. I understand that he did an amazing job and was really funny. I was simply saying that I prefer Robin's performance of Genie over this guy's.

I'd be interested in seeing, or hearing more precisely, what they would do with "You're Only Second Rate". Cause I love these songs and I really appreciate this particular rendition.
I saw this on December fourteenth in Detroit and the whole show blew me away the sets the actors especially genie all I can say is that even though they have very different acting techniques Robin Williams would be very proud of this man.
Robin Williams Will Smith James Monroe (this dude) They all did a great job with their own Genie and their own songs. And holy crap I love this one bc of how many Disney references there are. 4:26 onward. Just. Too many. And it's so funny. He does it great.

I love how Alan's work is combined in the song like Beauty and the Beast, Little Mermaid, Pocahontas, etc... 4:40-5:30
It sounds so weird not hearing an applause at the end.
Well, hands down the best Disney medley I’ve EVER HEARD
I scrolled lot and couldn't find it so here you go
lyrics
(Scat fill) Can you give me a "bada-yada-yada"?
(Aladdin repeat)
Good! Scotty-wop
(Aladdin repeat)
Everybody! Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo
(Audience repeat)
(Scat fill) Hit it!
Well Ali Baba had them forty thieves
Scheherezad-ie had a thousand tales
But master you in luck 'cause up your sleeves
You got a brand of magic never fails
You got some power in your corner now
Some heavy ammunition in your camp
You got some punch, pizzazz, yahoo and how
See all you gotta do is rub that lamp
And I'll say
Mister Aladdin, sir
What will your pleasure be?
Let me take your order
Jot it down
You ain't never had a friend like me
No no no
Life is your restaurant
And I'm your maitre d'
C'mon whisper what it is you want
You ain't never had a friend like me
Yes sir, we pride ourselves on service
You're the boss
The king, the shah
Say what you wish
It's yours! True dish
How about a little more Baklava?
Have some of column "A"
Try all of column "B"
I'm in the mood to help you dude
You ain't never had a friend like me
Can your friends do this?
Do your friends do that?
Do your friends pull this out their little hat?
Can your friends go, poof?
Well, looky here
Can your friends go, Abracadabra, let 'er rip
And then make the sucker disappear?
So doncha sit there slack jawed, buggy eyed
I'm here to answer all your midday prayers
You got me bona fide, certified
You got a genie for your chare d'affaires
I got a powerful urge to help you out
So what-cha wish? I really wanna know
You got a list that's three miles long, no doubt
Well, all you gotta do is rub like so -
(Spoken) Come on! Yes! And oh...
(Sung)
Mister Aladdin, sir, have a wish or two or three
I'm on the job, you big nabob
You ain't never had a friend like...me!
(Spoken) Can your friends do this?
No really...can they? You're welcome!

This man's voice is so buttery smooth, Paula Dene wants to use it as an ingredient for cooking.
He has such a beautiful voice
I just went to New York City and saw this, it was amazing!
I saw this in December, it was so good!
Yeah, I just saw it in NYC a few days ago. It was so beautiful, it made me cry.
MrGummyWorm7462 Going in 1 hour!!
R.I.P Mr.Williams. thank you for bringing me these laughs and tears of joy. We will always remember and love you...!
Can’t believe this guy is Asmodeus in Helluva Boss!
Ah wait what?! Amazing
He's also Zestial in Hazbin Hotel
And the English Dub voice for Queen from One Piece.
ROBIN WE MISS YOU
So glad there’s audio. I watched this live the other day expecting to be bored out of my mind and it was amazing. The sets the costumes and the music was amazing. I love jazz already as a musician so I kinda fan boyed with all the live music

OMG, imagine if Robin Williams had reprised his role as Genie on Broadway!!!
That would've been a dream come true!
Well he's dead so I think he'll have a hard time making it to auditions.
Y'know what would be a dream come true?? If Robin's spirit or ghost or something came to haunt the hell outta everyone. (In an endearing way, of course.)
I sang this for an audition once
Didnt get the part i wanted but it was still one of the best auditions ive done
Still waiting to be able to use this song again
Don’t hate me please, I like this version better than the original
My only favourite part is " WABAWA WA WA WABAWA WA WA "
my only part is at WABAWA WA WA WABAWA WA WA
Sorry for bad english
I german :D
Baston that's ok but I get really annoyed..... "I" is "I went to a place." I'm is describing YOU so "I'm German" would be grammatically correct....
Just trying to help you out ♥️
Baston ich bin englisch aber gestern habe ich Aladdin in Deutschland gesehen und es war soooooo gut!!!
Baston - WWE 2K18 Magst du die deutsche oder die englische Version lieber?
Magic cookie 392 I guess it’s not okay, then!
Now all I can hear is Lance Strongbow from Tangled singing this!
I've been a fan of James since I saw him play Bobby in a filmed performance of Memphis. I love him as Bobby and Lance. Got a great voice, teddy bear like psychic and a comic relief to the max.
I would've loved to have seen this guy be the genie in the new movie. He was fantastic!
You are not alone. Especially as a Tangled fan
It has been fillmed offichaly because quite a lot of cast members a few years ago joined the west end production for that reason
seeing this live was spectacular. i'm obsessed
Aah and that medley tho.. Music just got real man.
i saw this on Broadway a while good, and holy crap he was incredible
Fun fact: This guy also plays Ozzie in Helluva Boss, and also sings in that series, too.
Surprised James Monroe Iglehart won a Tony for playing the Genie and singing this song so wonderfully. And I was most surprised to see the Genie sing some Disney classics during the show.
It's not the same as Robin Williams' but it's more jazzy and long.
And quite nostalgic, you know, the other Disney songs used in it. :)
Yeah I know.
Totally agree. I loved Iglehart as Bobby in the filmed performance of Memphis. And I'm excited for his guest appearance on Tangled the Series.
Have you seen it in person? The biggest focus of this song is flashy choreography and amazing special effects. The song itself seems low key in comparison.
Sean Horace Why are you surprised???
My favourite Disney song, and this was an amazing cover.
Na verdade essa é a música original. A da Disney é que seria um "cover".
My favorite song is You're only Second Rate,By:Aladdin,The return of Jafar .
same here
I can imagine to see Asmodeus can sing this song.
The genie has so much life in this show and I can’t wait until I can finally see it for a 4th time. I love when he sings the other disney
Did you know the stadge show of this has been fillmed think it is going on disney plus at some point but they used the west end theater for fillming it
How I wish I could go to New York and see the broadway...
It's really good I hope you see it, you'll be blown away
Useless Hands Hamilton sucked
this hamilfan was about to comment but will casually leave now
Me too but I'm going to wait for the national tour to come to either the Pantages in Hollywood or Segerstrom Center in Costa Mesa. However, Segerstrom doesn't have Aladdin on their 2017-2018 season schedule.
actually had the same problem as you but that was until it opened in the west end so I went last month
I saw the show in Costa Mesa and I hope to see the show again someday
I got a chance to see this live. My goodness it’s spectacular the biggest number with an amazing talent. 💙💥
To me, the original will always be the best, but this was just simply amazing.
I love both versions but I must say I prefer Robin Williams' interpretation of the song because he put much more attitude & humor into it. He didn't focus on his singing as much as he did creating the character. But this actor definitely did it justice! I think Robin would be perfectly happy with it. ❤
This came out before he died.
+Kingdom080500 I wasn't saying that it didn't. I just mean that if he heard it (when he was alive or from the dead), he would be proud.

My friend used this song for an audition and she practiced it EVERYDAY.
And that folks, is how I memorized half the song.
All I can see for the tango bit is Mrs Doubtfire dancing around xD
That made me laugh then it was really sad.
I still prefer Robin Williams' version, but Inglehart is still completely mind blowing!
Jack Moody You’re absolutely right. Nothing tops Robin Williams, but this definitely comes close
Pretty great. Nothing can beat the original song but this is still pretty good.
I think that the broadway version did some of the songs better than in the movie. BUT I'm not saying that the movie songs are bad.
Someone should do an animatic of Ozzie singing this to Ozzie when they first met.
Been waiting to hear this forever. Fantastic, love it from the scat all the way through the Disney medley and big ensemble ending. :-)
I saw it on Broadway! It was AMAZING!!!
Dude I loved this musical especially seeing it live!!
In the beginning of the song you can hear him sing "Bippity, bobbity, boo!" a shout out to the Fairy Godmother from Cinderella. I wish I could see this live!
it's just so fun to listen. just listening I can feel the joy
never noticed the similarities to Little Shop of Horrors in this song before but there are some beats that are almost an exact copy.
same composer
+Jack Le OMG
I love LSOH!
TotallyNotSophie ikr
*also* he did the little mermaid, well the composer did the songs.
47 dislikes... This is all your fault Jafar!

ITS AT 333!!! WHY????
I'd be interested in seeing, or hearing more precisely, what they would do with "You're Only Second Rate". Cause I love these songs and I really appreciate this particular rendition.
wow so much nostalgia. This version is fantastic!
This is my favorite song in this show
Friend Like Me By Alan Menken Howard Ashman R.I.P
He should have been the live action Genie in the 2019 remake.
Its the best virsion of this song
I saw this on December fourteenth in Detroit and the whole show blew me away the sets the actors especially genie all I can say is that even though they have very different acting techniques Robin Williams would be very proud of this man.
I actually like it better than the original
Me too, sorry Robin Williamlovers...
R.I.P. Robin Williams
I love him!
Jim M THANK U
Jim M same
Ew.
me too
His voice is soo smoooooooothhh
Robin Williams
Will Smith
James Monroe (this dude)
They all did a great job with their own Genie and their own songs. And holy crap I love this one bc of how many Disney references there are. 4:26 onward. Just. Too many. And it's so funny. He does it great.
I can find no other more cheerful song. Woah.
