  • XMODEM is a file transfer protocol that was widely used in the BBS era, and is still used today in some specialty applications. Join me as I go through how XMODEM works in
detail and demo an XMODEM transfer on my Tandy 1000 and Radio Shack Color Computer.

Just implemented a cut-down version of Xmodem on my 65816 machine (by Mike Billington) and your explanation was the completing piece. 👍

I came across this video while unbricking our cisco switch that only supports xmodem file transfer from Rommon mode (like a safe mode)

Fantastic explanation, thanks! Also nice shout out to Tandy with the CoCo and Tandy 1000. I remember xmodem as well, as well as upgrading to szmodem eventually and playing games while files transferred. :) It's also interesting that xmodem is still useful today, with some terminal programs like "Secure CRT" supporting it as a convenience to upload and download files in place without opening up a separate SCP connection.

Glad you enjoyed it. Actually its funny you mention this.... the inspiration for doing the XMODEM vid was originated based on how I copy files from my Linux box to the Coco which is pretty similar except the transport (pure RS-232 instead of telnet/ssh) is different.

What I nice simple protocol. I shall implement it into my ToE home-brew computer's ROM. Q: I've not seen any new content in a while, are we going to see any more soon?

I have to use xmodem, because the coworker bricked the cisco switch 2960 we use. Booemer protocol painfully slow

By the time I got in to BBses Xmodem wouldn't be used if you knew better except on rare occasions where it was the only option available. Usually Zmodem would be used, Maybe on a few BBSes Zmodem might not be available and I would use Ymodem.

What's the reason for re-upload? All comments gone

Sorry, and thanks for the comments on the previous upload! Unfortunately I realized I had included a picture on the original vid that might have caused licensing issues so I reluctantly had to edit and re-upload.
