Interesting. Thank you. It's a big topic. For me, neoliberalism is a quasi-economic-political notion that is overarching in its prevalence and used for social engineering for the last fifty years or so. I would say it's an ideological project from capitalist think tanks. Neoliberalism has dissolved and weakened the sense of collective by emphasizing the individuals. Ironically, this has created bigger governments and institutions than ever before giving more power to government bureaucrats and corporations. In the capitalist context, there is fealty to the iconography of democracy but, when the institutions that facilitate democracy are being hijacked by big money, democracy means little to nothing. Capitalism and democracy are concepts that are fundamentally at odds with one another. We can have either capitalism or democracy but not both.

Thoroughly enjoyed this conversation with Dr. Moon and I look forward to reading her book. Truly love her upbeat personality! Thanks for having her on the podcast Dave!

Thank you Professor. Very insightful conversation.
Good point about how the product "democracy" is infused with neoliberalism - I've encountered many people who think that the "opposite of democracy is communism" (mixing up with dictatorship/elitism and capitalism).

Very interesting conversation and I completely agree with Dr Moon. Neoliberalism and to some extent, liberalism seem to have forgotten that its origin and core, which is the French concept of liberté, is not only freedom (from the Latin libertas) but also the idea of giving freely, of generosity (from the Latin liberalitas). Also the ideas of equalité and fraternité have been forgotten in these new democratic neoliberal systems… how could there be democracy if so many people are unprotected from the aftermath of a free market?

Civic Activism vs. Social Warrior - I struggle with the fluid definitions of language in use to achieve subjective or objective positioning. I like Moon's attitude towards making civic activism an enjoyable task to become more aware of concepts and how they can inform a direction towards higher levels of awareness in society.

I fear putting words in Dr. Moon's mouth but I get the sense, having read her book and spoken to her, that she is somewhat against making such important activities fun. This is what she sees the continued neoliberalization of society - we only do things that are either enjoyable to us or that which we will benefit from. Instead, she seems to advocating a world in which we do things as acts of service and that which is not necessarily fun or profit-driven.

@@DavidTizzard I interpreted her words around 45:30 to ask/question how to build up civil activism by developing at a zone of proximal development (not too hard or easy) which can be highly stimulating. I don't like the term "fun" because people tend to think it only for pleasure. I define fun as place we can play at the cutting edge of skills, knowledge and ability to play with the players in the game(s). It is a real real experience where your spirits animate you and forges your character. Note: These are my thoughts.

I’m skeptical about Dr Moons advocacy for positivity. I think that’s how many people felt during the Obama election with “Hope” and the actual neoliberal policies made society worse (not prosecuting Wall Street, corporate capture of our government, interventions in the Middle East etc). Now as a cynic I’m sensing a repeat of that election with Kamala’s “Joy”; the DNC was focused almost entirely on positive vibes while our government is enabling war crimes and their neoliberal policies have shipped many of the decent jobs overseas. I think citizens should be critical and make sure the government is responsive to us.

I share your cynicism about the latest sense of joy people are expected to feel as well as Dr. Moon's positivity (though this for different reasons).

@@DavidTizzard Not in the interview. In the opening footage fam,. I'd recomend a Canon EOS R6. its a full frame great for location shots, 4k 60 fps, mount that baby on a stabilzation and boom. Cost about $1600 which is a great serious camera to start. Or you can shoot with your iphone with a stabilzation hand mount and a wide lens mod for the iphone.
