    These are fun and essential tools. Everyone who doesn't have them needs to buy these while they are on sale! Bram was way ahead of the curve with these iOS midi plugins. They get used a lot by me to make generative patches I can then build on. What amazes me is how Bram has included mutation that is very musical in ways that other mid plugin apps cannot match. I have Mozaic. but unfortunately I have not figured it out very much, but it would be great to use it in a midi chain to add some of that Bram special sauce algorithm for more musical variation in a sequence.

    @viridisvir7077 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’ll be honest: one of the things that puts me off of iOS for composition (as opposed to general jamming/sound design) is the wonkiness and inconsistency of MIDI connectivity between apps.
    Some do a wonderful job of implementation like Bram’s apps and a handful of others, but all it takes is one app - whose sound you want but that doesn’t play nice in a MIDI chain - to wreck the flow and make one want to put down the iDevice and pick up a guitar or laptop or whatever.
    Maybe this is the solution tho... or at least “a” solution.🤔
    PS: thanks for the detailed walkthrough! 🙏

      @@GavinskisTutorials TBH I feel like it’s easier to list the few that *do* work for me than all of the fails. (Mind you, I’m not a super MIDI wizard either but I’ve been using MIDI for over two decades, long enough to know wonk when I see it usually.)
      A lot of it comes down to IAA apps, some of them legacy-ish, and secondarily the lack of a single standard protocol for defaults: some of them default to omni, some to channel 1, some to other channels inexplicably... and I won’t even begin to list apps that have MIDI controls but escape detection by other MIDI-enabled apps.
      Even vastly simplified approaches incorporating MIDI - like Ableton Link - often fall short. Like, try putting Groovebox in a source slot in AUM and getting a basic fucking start/stop to work any which way.
      I’ve seen MIDI utilities that listen for signal from available sources and allow you to redirect or configure them, but those same apps have also come and gone and become obsolete in the space of a few years (like the Apollo apps, which used to work adequately for some but not all purposes but are now abandonware.)

    • @GavinskisTutorials
      @GavinskisTutorials  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, yeah, I tend to stick to newer apps and IAA apps as much as possible. Didn't realise the problem was quite so had though!

    • @viridisvir7077
      @viridisvir7077 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GavinskisTutorials ...a more specific tale of woe now that I think about it is the DrumStudio app (apps.apple.com/us/app/drumstudio/id453405042) - its functionality and “feel” settings are utterly amazing. Yet historically only Funkbox worked with it over MIDI, despite identical MIDI controls in other drum apps I attempted.
      Whose fault is it? Well... What universal MIDI implementation standards have ever been presented to iOS devs aside from secondary documentation in SDK and API libraries?
      This is why AudioKit is actually a tiny light of hope, not so much because of their rigorousness or whatever but because it’s a single, common SDK whose resulting apps all share a single implementation protocol (at least in theory.)
      Even if it’s not them then it seems possible that maybe someone will come along and try to solve clock/sync with a new standard much as other issues like thru-put/‘dumbpiping’ (AudioBus, AUM) and general I/O (AUM, ApeMatrix).
      But I’m also not overly optimistic either.

    Thanks for this video, Gavin. I was trying to use Rozeta LFO to modulate the ribbon in Eventide Shimmerverb the other day and couldn't figure out how to make the routing work. I'll go back and try again and see if your information has made it less mystifying. I am finding that midi routing is my biggest obstacle right now. In some apps, like SWAM instruments, using the 'Learn' function to connect the Boss EV-1-WL expression pedal (going through MidiGuitar2) is effortless and intuitive. Other times, like trying to route a sequencer to one layer of Imaginando VS, I just couldn't figure it out. There needs to be, if it doesn't exist already, a "Midi Routing in AUM for Dummies" tutorial. Where did you learn?

    • @GavinskisTutorials
      @GavinskisTutorials  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @NarchoBlaster
      @NarchoBlaster ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GavinskisTutorials From the m... m... the what now? I must admit, I often find manuals are more confusing than helpful because they presuppose so much preexisting knowledge. Same with online tutorials: just assuming the user already knows x, y, and z and glossing over that info. One of my favorite bass player channels is PDBass, and one thing that I love is how he goes off on mini tangents to define his terms in a very pedagogical way. I'm still trying to figure out why there are different midi channels if you can assign different notes.

    How do you like this compared to something like Xequence 2? I’m looking for a decent sequencer to pair with AUM, but can’t decide!

      Totally different! These are more generative, xequence is more a traditional timeline sequencer. Get both for sure

      @@GavinskisTutorials well that’s sorted then! I’m hoping xequencer gets a Black Friday discount. Will keep this one bookmarked for when I can get Rozeta!
