Thanks for this video. I had this exact drive and my computer stopped recognizing it. After following your instructions with the hair dryer, I pulled the drive out and put it in another hard drive cage. I now have access to the data and photos on the drive.
This was great help: I managed to mangle the USB port on a similar portable drive, and I wanted to try to get the data off of it. It was good to see tips on how to safely disassemble it. I would not have thought of the hair dryer on my own!
Hi it is because I have seen your guide and I want to do the same thing as you just with a Seagate Game Drive for PS4 External Hard Drive instead of and you skipped the part where you used the hair dryer and I just want to know how you did it I bought a Philips DryCare Prestige hair dryer HP8280 and I was wondering how I should do it did you just did it by using the lowest heat and I wanted to put a Samsung 870 QVO 8000GB 2.5" Serial ATA-600 inside the hard drive case in closure can I put one in there?🙂
I used medium heat (though high will probably be fine so long as you move it around the outer edge of the top enclosure lid to soften the adhesive there). Then you can use something thin like a dull knife, guitar pick or credit card to start at a corner to lift the metal lid from the plastic. From there slowly slide along to release one side of the lid. Reheat with the hairdryer when it starts cooling off. Once you get three sides off the lid should very easily pop completely off. As for putting a 8TB sata drive inside the enclosure, it may or may not work depending on the usb controller seagate used. Some drives' controller have a max limit of the size drive they can recognize. I haven't tested what the max is for the drive I opened in this video.
Hello sir, thank you for this video. Will a laptop hdd with 9.5mm thickness fit into this enclosure? I have this portable hdd and its broken, i wish to keep using this enclosure, its so slim and neat.
Uncovering the platters will likely destroy the drive unless done in a cleanroom. If you still want to anyway, there's usually a few torx screws on the top of the drive and one or two hiding under the label sticker near the actuator arm pivot and platter center. Then you can pry the top metal lid to break the seal and get inside.
I have the 4tb version of this exact drive. Thank you for doing the video on this. The video was clear and informative. Great video... although me personally, I don't care for saving a $60 drive. Followed your guide to start it off and then basically destroyed the boy after that, it's a data recovery job.
Yeah, I don't bother saving a failing hdd (just get as much data off as I can, bin it and buy a new drive). This was more for getting the drive cheaper by shucking it from an external than buying an internal (funny how economies of scale make buying an external cheaper than a bare drive of the same size).
Yeah the newer toshiba and western digital portable drives unfortunately integrate the usb sata bridge into the drive controller board for cost cutting reasons making them impossible to reuse the bare sata drive.
DEAR FRIEND I have the same enclosure with which you do your tutorial, buy a new hard disk sata 2.5 and install it in the enclosure but when I connect it to the USB port it does not turn on the LED that shows that the hard disk is on, although it recognizes the HDD. What do you think could be the problem? I've already passed on information but it does not turn on the led, does that LED work for you? greetings thank you
I suspect seagate has made the sata bridge detect something about the original drive that makes the indicator work. I've swapped the drives in two of mine and the same thing happened, the indicator LED stops working but everything else works fine.
A newbie here with new HP desktop. Had to get a Seagate 2TB external hard drive to transfer all my old pics and files over onto. Really interested in what you did here. Great job. Is there any usable parts on my old tower that I should save? Or just turn it over to someone who recycles them? Just inquiring.
If there's a graphics card then hold onto it, the hdd will always be useful so long as it's in good condition, and the ram is potentially useful so long as it's new enough (ddr3/4). The cpu may or may not be useful depending on the specs and if you plan on doing a frankenbuild sometime in the future.
So long as you don't bend the metal top when taking it off it'll just clip back onto the plastic base. I've opened and closed these seagate drive enclosures multiple times without issue.
I'm still trying to figure out why Seagate is using Samsung drives in some, HGST drives in others. Your video is the first I've seen that shows an actual Seagate ST2000LM.
When I place the drive as internal drive for PC it has beeping sound. But when I place back in the seagate original enclosure, beeping sound is gone, so what is the problem? HDD inside is not seagate but samsung.
Sounds like some kind of warning (maybe low power idk?), does the internal sata port/power you are using do anything strange when another drive is connected to it?
Hello I read that seagate models ST2000LM007 have a lot of failure rates. That model is seen on your disk. My question is if the disk still works for you ? Did you have any performance problems? Thank you
Yep I still have this drive in my desktop, pretty much left it running 24/7 (though the drive spools down when not in use for awhile) since I made this video and haven't had an issue with it so far.
How do you know a disk has this high failure rate ? I bought one at Amazon last july, sold as new, but I was sent a "recertified" one, and as expected, it failed a lot, it has now 160 reallocated sectors, it was also a Back Up plus slim
I've noticed many ppl say that after using/opening their seagate that the light stops working, I have a feeling that this is some sort of firmware thing that stops lighting up the led maybe as tamper detection or if the original drive is formatted or removed.
Jesse Petrini the metal lid is held onto the plastic bottom with adhesive and small clips. I used a hairdryer to weaken the glue and a plastic pry tool to carefully lift the metal top off.
Sorry I should have specified. After you take the metal casing off like you did in this video you have the hard drive. I'm trying to take the actual internal hard drive apart but like other hard drives usually there are screws and with this one there aren't
Jesse Petrini Ah I understand now. To get inside the guts of the drive you will need to remove the screws which are countersunk and hidden under the top white label. May I ask why you need to get inside the mechanism?
sjm4306 so the drive is making a beeping noise and not working which means the little dial is stuck on the track of the disk because it was bouncing around in my backpack. So I have to manually move the dial back. What do you mean by countersunk?
Jesse Petrini By countersunk I mean they are flush with the surface under the sticker so it looks like aren't even there. My advice would be to open the drive in as clean of an area as possible and once you get it up and running backup the most important data since once you open a drive it might work for a year or a only few minutes if you are unlucky. Any sort of contamination like dust that gets inside can destroy the drive. Good luck!
I didn't even need a hair dryer I just shoved a guitar pick under there and it popped right off no heat needed. Also it did not deform the top of the shell you just slide the guitar pick all the way around
@@sjm4306 well I appreciate your detail oriented work. That being said I will no longer be needing this case I just wanted the adapter. I took apart my 1 TB drive just for that adapter. I was going to clone another drive on to an SSD.
You mean the usb to sata bridge? I think you can find them on ebay (just search something like seagate usb to sata and sort by lowest price, should be near the top of the list).
I want to use my external seagate slimline hdd as my secondary internal hdd in windows 10. It has data and is formatted in the exFAT format. Do I need to reformat it into NTFS for it to work? Thanks.
Nope, you can leave it as exfat and it'll work fine. The only downside i know of would be exfat is more vulnerable to unrepairable data corruption than ntfs.
@sjm4306 damn, that's quite a risk for the almost 2Tbs of data in that drive. Can't even migrate them to a different drive for a reformat as I don't have any other drive that big. Is it a high risk? Meaning, are exFAT formats susceptible to frequent 'data corruption'? Curious.
It's not that it'll corrupt more frequently per se than ntfs, just that since there's no journaling so from my understanding if there is a corruption there's no means to recover the lost data like there would be with ntfs. From personal experience I've lost data on exfat much more frequently than on ntfs so I only use exfat with redundant storage or for temporary file transfers. Also I believe there's a way to convert a partition from exfat to ntfs without erasing data but that also has a risk of wiping the data so they advise backing everything up anyways.
@@sjm4306 yeah, makes sense. I'll probably just try splitting the data to 2 or more smaller external drives and then format to ntfs. Thanks for your kind help. :)
hi, hope you get this mesaage and could provide answers to my querries.. i got this 1TB Seagate Backup Plus Portable Drive more or less looks the same with the one u got.. my problem now is i want to open it and clean it since i noticed small red ants are coming out from it.. can i possibly open it without the help of hairdryer? and if i could possibly put it back together without putting/replacing glue on it and still be sealed as stock?
You may be able to open it without a hairdryer, but the risk of bending the metal top will be much higher. And I've had no problem reusing the original adhesive (though once you open it the adhesive does lose some of its strength).
I'm not sure if you'll even see this seeing as this video is 4 years old but I'm having issues with my Seagate 4TB external hard drive for my Xbox one. When plugged in the light comes on but my Xbox no longer detects it. I know it's the drive that's messed up. Is there a way I can get my saved game data off it and onto a new one?
Can you plug it into a pc and run scan disk to see if it can fix any errors. Not really sure how xboxs format external drives but hoping it's a standard that can be recognized and fix by a pc.
Hey, i got a problem with my seagate hard drive. I need to open it but i dont know how, can u help me out? I dont find any screws so i can get into the actual inside
How you'd open it depends on the model. the all plastic models usually have plastic catches at the seam between the two halves and metal lidded ones like the one in this video have small catches and adhesive that require heating a little and careful prying.
So how much better would this run by plugging it into SATA? I've been having issues with my external Seagate with it randomly disconnecting or even freezing in the middle of a transfer (causing Windows itself to freak out and freeze until I disconnect it)
Usb 3 on average on my machines has a bottleneck somewhere around 100-125MB/s while sata 3 is closer to hundreds of MB/s so definitely speed. First though I'd suggest doing a surface scan and taking a look at the smart data for the drive as it could be a hardware issue with the drive itself causing the issues.
@@sjm4306 well, that's another issue I'm having. I was hoping it would actually scan through if I plugged it into SATA, anytime I run a chkdsk the process screws up somewhere and stops, even though the drive is usable and all my files seem to be fine.
Yes, the largest internal hdd a ps4 can fit is 2tb. There are kits for fitting full size 3.5" drives on top that go up to something like 4 or 8tb but those require an adapter and have a large hump hanging off the top.
I meant for 2.5" 9mm sata I believe the max capacity in that thickness is 2tb. Over 2tb and you get into double platters or more with thicknesses beyond 12.5mm which I believe wont physically fit inside the ps4 with fitting the original mount/lid (though I could be remembering this wrong).
Are you absolutely sure the sata adapter you are using works. Also what capacity is the drive? Some adapters will only see drives under 2TB so you may need to try another adapter.
Supposedly they still have to honor warranty because of new laws ( only in the us) . byte my bits has a vidoe where he shucked wd drive and they honored his warranty . Not sure if it applies to seagate.
Sounds like the drive is damaged. Even seemingly relatively short drops can kill mechanical drives, especially while the drive is on and spinning. Or it could be some random drive failure like bearings seizing or the heads getting stuck. Can you mount it to a computer and try to look at the smart data using something like crystaldisk?
Can you see it in a hard disk utility like partition magic? Did anything happen to it just before it started doing this? Can you hear/feel the disk spinning when plugged in? It could be the drive is damaged or the formatting corrupted and thus it wont mount.
I already mentioned I use partition magic. Windows also has their own disk utility built into the OS (and I'm sure mac does as well), and linux has a command line dd utility.
Sounds like the hdd has a physical fault, probably a head crash that's seized the arm. Pretty much a death sentence for the drive. Was the drive ever bumped, dropped, or suddenly disconnected?
sjm4306 might of been dropped. When it was making the noise I just disconnected & reconnected but it wouldn’t pop up. After that I just opened it but didn’t do anything else.
I've got 2 Seagate Backup Plus Slim 1TB ... I'm hoping you see this post and can reply with an answer, do you know if they have the SATA hookup like that one you used on here? And, can I use it in a Laptop computer, Lenovo Yoga 700-14, Core I5 with an SSD drive in it. I believe it's 256gb, I have WD 500GB SSD that I was planning on putting into it, but if I can put the Seagate 1TB in, I'd much rather do that...
As far as I know all seagate external drives use a sata bridge and sata drive. It's western digital that use custom integrated usb bridges. So your seagate drives ought to work just fine in your computer.
sjm4306, ok... thank you for your input. I just ordered the SATA to USB cable to download all info on laptop to new drive. I'm going to try it. Nothing to loose, 1TB of storage to gain. Thanx, for replying.
I brought a brand new wire, and I try to plug it in into my Xbox and it won't register. I had about 30 games on it and its the 4tb version. Do you have any recommendations?
On what to do? Kind of devastated it doesn't work any more I never treated it wrong and it's litterally been in one spot in its entire time of purchase until now
@@sjm4306 the ports have no dust in them which is the crazy part, If I really had to nit pick anything the prong itself that goes to the smaller part looks slightly bent inwards but litterally by a micro-centimeter, because other than that the new wire I got off Amazon fits securely inside of it with no playroom. I'm 100% willing to use your video as a guide in order to replace the part and take it apart to get it working again, I just don't have the knowledge as far ordering what part I need to get it functioning again. I tried plugging it in on my laptop last night and it wasn't registering, nor turning on. Thank you btw for answering!
Why do you do what Morton Hojarth does and use a HP Proliant DL580 GEN9 with 6TB of ECC RAM and 12 SATA/SAS drives in RAID 10 might be a little bit noisy but replacing the cooling fans with Noctua fans aught to cut the racket the unit kicks up to a tolerable level, you might be able to get rid of the ESXI and replacing the OS with Windows 10 and SONY VEGAS for the video editing package, you might say that the HP Proliant is expensive but WEB Providers are replacing HP Proliant DL580 Gen9 with Lenovo Blade servers and selling off the old units on EBAY.
Hi there, you mentioned that you used your 500gb hdd on the enclosure. Did you encounter any problems on it? The reason I’m asking is because I ugraded my PS4 internal hdd using this method, however upon installing the 500gb hdd of the ps4 on the enclosure the LED on the enclosure doesn’t light anymore. The drive is being detected and can be used used normally as an external drive, the only problem is that the LED light doesn’t turn on anymore.
I have that exact same issue actually on two of these enclosures so it isn't just a fluke. I have a sneaking suspicion that seagate is either checking the drive to see if it has their branding or maybe the firmware on their drives have something special that makes that indicator work.
@@sjm4306 you need to flip the lid around. On one corner there is a led light that you must line up with the lid corner that has the small window to show the light. If you install the lid in the wrong orientation the light window won't be over the led light anymore. Solution rotate lid 180 degrees
Yep, the only limitations for the ps4 internal drive are the donor drive must be sata, under I believe 9.5mm thick or so, and under 4tb (this could be inaccurate as I think I heard sony released a firmware update to increase the max capacity it will accept).
pocket review It's a dell optiplex 780 ultra small form factor with a core2duo clocked at 3ghz with a single 4gb stick of ddr3, 120gb boot ssd and now an additional 2tb storage. For mods I've stuck a half size mini pcie WiFi card, mounted an external antenna, and switched out some of the front panel led colors to spice things up. It is no powerhouse but still quite usable given its size for editing, general use, simulating, CAD, mild gaming, and programming.
pocket review For most things a dual core 3 ghz cpu is plenty fast enough especially when coupled with a sata 3 ssd (the hdd latency is normally the limiting factor not the cpu speed). Given I don't really game on it (my laptop blows it out of the water), but it is pretty fast for most everything else (I can cold boot windows 7 to desktop in under 12s, and opening most programs from ssd is nearly instantaneous).
You'll need to check the original drive's thickness and new drive must be the same thickness or thinner. Additionally the hp pavilion must accept sata drives and not the older ide standard (totally different connectors/interface). Other than that it should work.
Listen people!!! The external drive it's made to function EXTERNAL!!! Trust me, it will die very soon without the ''ADAPTER'', wich comes with the enclosure.
I've been using the exact drive INTERNALLY in my desktop since I made this video and it still works flawlessly. I must've put thousands of hours of operation on it by now. If yours dies without the usb bridge then you are misinterpreting the cause of failure and it's either due to a manufacturing fault, misuse, or normal wear after much use. There is absolutely no technical nor scientific reason the drive needs the usb bridge to continue functioning.
Hi, I have a question that I hope you could help me with, I'm going to buy an HP laptop to use it mostly to game on it, but the thing is that it comes with a 5400rpm 1TB HDD and a 128GB M.2 drive, I think that is not enough for me to install all my games and at the same time have all my files stored, so my idea is to replace the 1TB HDD with the one you disassembled, do you think this drive will perform ok installed internally in the laptop? For games and that kind of stuff. I'm about to buy the same Seagate Backup Plus portable hard drive but instead of a 2TB one, it is going to be a 4TB one (I guess the read and write speeds would be mostly the same...) Do you think it will work nicely with games? Have you tríed out any game running from that HDD on your PC? Please tell me, I'll appeeciate it a lot. Thank you very much.
These seagate drives will work fine in your laptop, I use it to store my game library as well and haven't seen any noticeable issues playing games over any other mechanical hdd. The one thing to be careful of is 2tb might be the largest that will physically fit inside as I believe the 4tb drive are twice as thick as a normal 2.5" drive.
sjm4306 Ok, you are right about the size, I may buy the laptop first, then disassemble it and see how much room I got in there... then if I see I got space enogh to install the drive I'll buy it and then I'll pray for it to fit 😅. Thank you very much!
That 2 terabyte drive was originally over 100$ I bought a 4 terabyte external seagate Hard drive for only 80$ at walmart, and 80$ was the original price, my drive is bigger than that too lol
So I just got a new Seagate to do a swap on my PS4. The 2TB I paid a total of $74.36 thru Amazon, $69.99 plus tax. Here's the link, Seagate (STGD2000100) Game Drive for PS4 Systems 2TB External Hard Drive Portable HDD - USB 3.0, Officially Licensed Product. My question to you is do I need to do ANYTHING to set this up before making the swap besides backing up all of my junk on the PS4? Thanks for this video, my next swap will be my laptop. Like you said, really cheap way of getting a 2TB HD.
I actually just did a ps4 upgrade recently (unfortunately didn't film it though). The target drive will be wiped and formatted once in the ps4 so you don't need to do anything special to it before installation. Like you mentioned though you need to backup the original drive using the utility in the ps4 settings menu to another external drive and will need the ps4 firmware os recovery downloaded from sony's ps4 site. It's totally more annoying than it could be but sony always tends to go nuts with antipiracy measures that just end up punishing legit paying customers. In a perfect world you'd be able to plug the new drive into usb and just clone the original drive using only the ps4 itself and just swap the drives but instead you need at least one extra external drive to create an intermediary backup and reload the os back on.
@@sjm4306 I'm already using 1 Seagate as the external. As soon as I seen this a few days ago and mentioned you could swap a PS4 I jumped to buy another. The 2 TB I had in the game keeps crashing and the error code said to do a couple of things, if they didn't work then I had to get a new HD and the $74 for this compared to the $299 for regular HD was a no brainer. Thanks again for the video and extra info.
@@sjm4306 So quick follow up on the PS4 HD swap. Worked great following this video. Did however have to download the "re-installation" files from the PSN site instead of the System Software Update because I have an older model, CUH-1001A. Just in case some else has an issue with the update, that might be the problem.
It's wasn't difficult once I heated the adhesive that's also lining the lid. The clips were quite weak that one of those spudger tools made quick work of them. Keep in mind this is the older metal lid model version of this drive, they have a newer similar looking all plastic model that does have beefier clips all around with no adhesive that is definitely more difficult to remove so that's probably what you are thinking of.
Hibernating a system with a boot ssd is a good way to wear out the flash if you use it often. I usually just keep my desktop in sleep most of the time. My laptop is fast enough that I usually just do a full shutdown and boot everytime I need it.
Thanks for the advice. I've had this drive running pretty much continuously since I installed it in this video but just as a precaution everything is backup up on another drive as well.

So long as you don't bend the metal top when taking it off it'll just clip back onto the plastic base. I've opened and closed these seagate drive enclosures multiple times without issue.
sjm4306 appreciate it your video was very helpful
I'm still trying to figure out why Seagate is using Samsung drives in some, HGST drives in others. Your video is the first I've seen that shows an actual Seagate ST2000LM.
It's probably some economics of scale sort of thing.

Can i put this drive inside a ps4 after removing the casing?
Yep, pretty sure. You will need to reformat/reinstall the os I believe onto the new drive.
Can I leave this plugged all the time to my pc to do auto back up?
Yes, the drive will spool down after awhile when not accessed and spin up when you go to do a backup.
@@sjm4306 other drive no problem, same cable, same sata power. I got seagate backup plus slim, but inside is samsung, maybe that's cause problem
Low power i'm no sure, don't have any tester yet.
That's odd, you could try googling the samsung drive model number and beeping to see what kind of error it is
IS IT 2.5 OR 3.5 INCH ?
2.5"
Can i remove the HDD inside of it and change it with a sata ssd making it an external ssd?
Yep, I done this a few times temporarily when I couldn't find my usb sata adapter and I needed to backup an ssd.
If you buy a new drive and the bait and switch you with a recert, instant return in my book.
Can I fix my light?
I've noticed many ppl say that after using/opening their seagate that the light stops working, I have a feeling that this is some sort of firmware thing that stops lighting up the led maybe as tamper detection or if the original drive is formatted or removed.
Thanks for the great information on opening it!

does it fit in laptops?
So long as your laptop can fit a 9mm 2.5" sata drive
My hard drive was messing up and all I had to do was take off the sata adapter thing and just use a sata usb cable
Can i use this drive in in a laptop? Thanks
Yes so long as your laptop accepts 2.5" sata drives and drives up to 9.5mm thick.
@@sjm4306 it's a evoo laptop 15. Thanks
yo i dont have that tool what other tool can I use to open it
Dull knife/flat head screwdriver?
How do you actually open up this drive? There are no screws to take out in order to get to the disk
My adhesive was gripping pretty tight, I guess because it was a brand new drive.
@@sjm4306 well I appreciate your detail oriented work. That being said I will no longer be needing this case I just wanted the adapter. I took apart my 1 TB drive just for that adapter. I was going to clone another drive on to an SSD.
dude what did you use to mod the pc led lights?
I bought some 0603 LEDs, desoldered the original ones and soldered in new ones of different colors
Can you get the adapter sata 3 to c type?
Yep, I searched ebay and found a few
What was the part you removed called and how can I replace mine?
The port side that you removed when the drive itself. I have a 2tb Xbox seagate game drive which is basically the same as yours.
And I've had no problem reusing the original adhesive (though once you open it the adhesive does lose some of its strength).
sjm4306 will the drive work just fine granting no bending will happen?
Just dont press on the top of the sata drive and it'll be fine

Does this work for the base ps4?
If so I must use it and open it up to get a 2tb for cheap.
Yes, the largest internal hdd a ps4 can fit is 2tb. There are kits for fitting full size 3.5" drives on top that go up to something like 4 or 8tb but those require an adapter and have a large hump hanging off the top.
@@sjm4306 the largest a PS4 can support is 8tb drives internally.
Plus 8tb external
I meant for 2.5" 9mm sata I believe the max capacity in that thickness is 2tb. Over 2tb and you get into double platters or more with thicknesses beyond 12.5mm which I believe wont physically fit inside the ps4 with fitting the original mount/lid (though I could be remembering this wrong).

Mine keeps beeping and it won’t connect to my ps4 idk what to do
Sounds like the drive is damaged. Even seemingly relatively short drops can kill mechanical drives, especially while the drive is on and spinning. Or it could be some random drive failure like bearings seizing or the heads getting stuck. Can you mount it to a computer and try to look at the smart data using something like crystaldisk?

Sounds like the hdd has a physical fault, probably a head crash that's seized the arm. Pretty much a death sentence for the drive. Was the drive ever bumped, dropped, or suddenly disconnected?
sjm4306 might of been dropped. When it was making the noise I just disconnected & reconnected but it wouldn’t pop up. After that I just opened it but didn’t do anything else.

Glad it wasn’t just me, bummer that theres no way to fix it
Hey guys, you prob just replaced the lid on backwards.
Nope, even tested using the usb sata bridge externally outside the case/shell and it just doesnt light up anymore but works perfectly otherwise.
@@sjm4306 you need to flip the lid around. On one corner there is a led light that you must line up with the lid corner that has the small window to show the light. If you install the lid in the wrong orientation the light window won't be over the led light anymore.

Can u make to ps3 internal hdd?
Yes you can
Is it possible to do this on a ps4?
Yep, the only limitations for the ps4 internal drive are the donor drive must be sata, under I believe 9.5mm thick or so, and under 4tb (this could be inaccurate as I think I heard sony released a firmware update to increase the max capacity it will accept).
Great job!!
What desktop specs do you have?
pocket review It's a dell optiplex 780 ultra small form factor with a core2duo clocked at 3ghz with a single 4gb stick of ddr3, 120gb boot ssd and now an additional 2tb storage. For mods I've stuck a half size mini pcie WiFi card, mounted an external antenna, and switched out some of the front panel led colors to spice things up. It is no powerhouse but still quite usable given its size for editing, general use, simulating, CAD, mild gaming, and programming.

Can I use the Seagate backup plus slim 1TB as an internal hard drive on a laptop (hp pavilion)

For games and that kind of stuff. I'm about to buy the same Seagate Backup Plus portable hard drive but instead of a 2TB one, it is going to be a 4TB one (I guess the read and write speeds would be mostly the same...) Thank you very much.

Sorry, you got it all wrong - there are clips inside the case that you have to take a lot of effort to pry off
It's wasn't difficult once I heated the adhesive that's also lining the lid. The clips were quite weak that one of those spudger tools made quick work of them. Keep in mind this is the older metal lid model version of this drive, they have a newer similar looking all plastic model that does have beefier clips all around with no adhesive that is definitely more difficult to remove so that's probably what you are thinking of.
it is never good to fill up a system drive. you need space for pagefile and some other system functions such as hibernate.
Hibernating a system with a boot ssd is a good way to wear out the flash if you use it often. I usually just keep my desktop in sleep most of the time. My laptop is fast enough that I usually just do a full shutdown and boot everytime I need it.
I hate being that guy But if you buy a Seagate External HDD you should expect a Seagate HDD to be inside...
