I’m going to start by saying that I love Rose as a companion. She wasn’t the most traditionally intelligent companion the Doctor has ever had, but she had empathy, and emotional intelligence. She was a good “first” companion for the reboot. She showed the Doctor love, and joy, and brought him out of his PTSD issues.
That said, Martha is a phenomenal companion. She is brilliant, and insightful, and absolutely stands up to the Doctor when she should. She is more mature, and knows her own mind. She isn’t afraid to do what’s right, and she is on a more equal footing to the Doctor. Lots of people used to give Martha crap as a character, because she had an infatuation with the Doctor, but he was still obviously hung up on Rose. But Martha is so much more than a swooning love interest. There are some upcoming episodes that really showcase Freema’s acting abilities, and highlight what a stellar companion Martha is, and I can’t wait for you to see those.
As always, love every one of your Who reactions, and keep em coming!

@@IsiahBradley we sure do. I always say that one of the most amazing things about this show is the quality of the actors. Every single doctor and companion just absolutely tear up the scenery. They’re all so good. It’s ok to prefer one companion to another, or one Doctor over another, but you gotta admit, they all do just beautiful work. Even on some of the “sillier” episodes.

Freema Agyeman was 27 years old at the time of filming her character Martha Jones is suppose to be either 23 or 25.
Harold Saxon you haven't met yet...but he has been slightly mentioned previously in "Love & Monsters" and "The Runaway Bride" who ordered the racnoss ship to be destroyed.
Mark Gatiss who played Lazarus is a real life long time Dr. Who fan as he had written Dr. Who books/novels during the wilderness years when there was no Dr. Who on television during the 1990's he also played The Doctor in a parody Dr. Who sketch he did with Little Britain star David Walliams he has also written a few Dr. Who episodes such as "The Unquiet Dead" but I won't name the rest as it's spoilery and yes he also played Minecroft in "Sherlock".
It's nice to see Martha's family alittle bit but the families of the companions is not a storyline I'm particulary invested in with the show I have to say the scene where Francine smacks the Doctor was kind of getting abit irritating by this point it was funny once with Jackie but it constantly started to get abit irritating and annoying.
I know there's some people who complain about the outdated CGI it personally doesn't bother me it's not the effects that make Dr. Who it's the characters and the stories.
Overall it's a great story probaly the most underrated and deserved abit more than it did.

"Really shouldn't take that long to reverse the polarity - I must be a bit out of practice" is a nod to the classic series.
The Doctor says he will 'reverse the polarity of the neutron flow" a few times in the old show because - as the story goes - the 3rd Doctor, Jon Pertwee, didn't like memorising technobabble, but actually complimented the writers on that phrase, finding it amusing. So the writers wrote it (or just reverse the polarity) in for him a few more times, and then for other doctors as a continuity reference.
And so Gatiss is reviving it, because he's all about the Continuity references. This was a 35 year old ref when the ep was aired - Mark Gatiss going deep!

“I feel like we should know Harold Saxon?”
    Maybe you will…..
You are correct. The actor who played Mycroft Holmes in Sherlock is this guy, Mark Gatiss, who is playing Professor Lazarus in this story. Gatiss is an actor/writer/producer and director, probably best remembered for playing a number of different roles in a darkly satirical British TV comedy programme called The League of Gentlemen. Gatiss was (and still is), a huge Doctor Who fan, having grown up with the programme during the third Doctor’s era (1970 - 1974).
After the classic series of Doctor Who (1963 - 1989) was cancelled during the end of the 1980’s, Gatiss was just one of many fans who would write original Doctor Who stories as novels, in an attempt to keep fandom and the show’s legacy going, eternally hopeful that the show might be brought back one day. When the BBC announced the show’s return in 2004, the new series show runner and head writer, Russell T. Davies (also a big fan of classic Who) asked Gatiss if he would be interested in writing for the new series, to which he replied that he would, and from those initial discussions came the story idea for ‘The Unquiet Dead’ Charles Dickens story in season 1.
Gatiss went on from writing that story to write ‘The Idiots Lantern’ story in season 2 and has gone on to write other future NuWho TV stories as well. He appears as an actor in the show later on in the NuWho run, though neither this story nor his appearance in the next Who story was written by him.

Let's be honest, we would have been better off if Lazarus did turn into a gremlin rather than, well, what we got was called. At least we know gremlins can be done convincingly, whereas the effects in this make The Scorpion King from The Mummy 2 look good.
One thing New Who does very differently when compared to the Classic era is the companions, specifically their families. In the classic era, once someone stepped into the TARDIS, not a word was heard about their families or anyone left behind. Some joined after their families had died Vicki, Victoria and Nyssa, for example, but for the most part no one seemed to worry about those left behind. Tegan was the first companion with family we were introduced to, and we got a few episodes with Peri's stepfather (kind of). I think it helped make the new series, to be honest, as it is far more relatable for the viewer.

Oh, time when it is unlimited is absolutely a curse. It's like money; when you have more than you can possibly spend in a lifetime, it loses all meaning if value. Only when we see it as finite and precious can we attach significant meaning to that which we have. And sonewhat like money, there's no telling how much we're going to have to spend across our life, so sometimes you have to choose to spend on things/people/experiences when you'll regret not doing so... or vice versa, saying no to spending time on things that you would want to spend on something else, or save for later. There's a quote from an episode I can't remember if you've seen yet, so I won't put it here, but it speaks to the Doctor's psychology in why he travels, why he avoids going the "slow path" (as Madame de Pompadour put it) like the rest of us, and I think it has to do with how time and its passage looks different to him than it does to us humans.
Rekkai makes a good point that Martha and Rose have different family dynamics and situations, so it plays out differently in this season too. Although we hadn't seen then much until this episode, I think it's telling that one of the first things we see about Martha is what her family situation is like and how they interact with her. There was conflict around her brother's bday party and everyone called Martha to have her mediate. In her family, Martha is the one who serves as the peacekeeper, the calm and mature person that everyone relies on. I think they are not used to Martha putting her own wants and needs first, but now in this episode she's come back and is acting differently, asserting what she wants to do, rather than being passive and doing what the others want. I think that's why her mom feels something's off, because for Martha it's been days or weeks, but for them it's just been a few hours, hakf a day at most.

Always never got the hate for this episode. I don't think it's that bad.
I'll say this, back in Victorian and Edwardian times, 21 was the age that was considered to be an adult rather than 18 nowadays.

If you think the episodes have been strong so far in season 3 then you ain’t seen nothing yet. The first half of this season is so weak compared to the second half…! Like, it’s almost two different shows the difference in the quality in the second half of the season.

while i enjoyed most episodes on a first watch going back through outside of being a dirty old man i just look at the stories and these first 6 for me are pretty dull. also freema is cute and all but her voice bugs me a bit when it cracks when she gets excited or screams etc. also im a breast man so sadly donna was my fav cause that wedding dress was probably the most cleavage we got since like classic who. sadly i think half of each season is full of episodes i generally skip on personal rewatches. a bit more tolerable in reactions since its cut down but then i can also play at 2x lol.
i dunno about the statement about black families and not having much therapy. i think thats more a generation thing than a racial thing. i think therapy is more common these days. but figure this was what this was 2007 and martha was probably in her mid 20s i know i went through a lot of shit as a kid mostly because my dad was too stupid to realize beating my ass wasnt making me fall in line and that he needed a different approach. but nah you hit them till they do what you tell them to do. wish he gave me a black eye sooner than high school my life could have turned out drastically different if i didnt grow up with all that bs. sad thing too is i had lots of therapy as a kid though my dad probably needed it more. and not that they even understood my condition as a kid it was more the school system just trying to get with a problem kid. send him to therapy and special schools to get him out of our school. my parents just went with whatever was recommended because the schools didnt want to deal with a bad acting child and the parents assume the school knows whats best. so no one wanting to deal with the issue properly

There can be tension between the doctor and the companion, but usually it doesn’t go beyond that, at the point you are at in Season 3. The doctor and rose were never actually together. And Im pretty sure the doctor never had a relationship with any of the companions before in the old series, but feel free to fact check that, I could be wrong. It wasn’t till Rose that there was an implication of something more. But they still never did anything about it. What comes after this point is complicated and I won’t spoil anything, but romantic relationships with the doctor was not a thing for most of the Who cannon..even though the companions always wish it were different, lol
