I prefer to hold the tender bundled out and a bit above my face so that the breath travels up and the smoke, heat, and fire does not blow into my face. Good vid.

With you about the EDC carry bits - however I would amend the Bic part. In any kind of wind they're useless, as I found out to my cost one day. I now carry a good quality jet lighter which lights stuff in Any conditions! Dont rely on a Bic,.. it could cost you more than you want to pay !!

Suggestion: make a small slit at the end of the lower bamboo piece that touches the tree. Stick the knife into the tree bark with the blade oriented vertically, and rest the bamboo on it with the knife blade inserted into the slit. Should make the lower board less likely to fall off the knife.

+Norman Means Thank you. Not necessary for me. The ledge provided by the knife works fine. Thank You!

If there's a weakness in the bamboo, you might start a split; not a good thing to do in the middle of firemaking!

Nice work Sir. I did this two years ago and found it one of the hardest friction fires to do.

I admit to being a firebug but this is a new one on me. I bet you make it look easier than it is. I guess I'll find out when I can find some thick bamboo.

I hear people say that it is difficult. This one... happens to be an easy one for me and a favorite.

Nice! I like Paleomanjim's video, but I do think you're a better teacher. Wonder if this could be adapted to agave stalks for us desert-dwellers? I grew up in an area full of bamboo of many varieties (NW Florida, right on the Gulf Coast) but live out in Southern AZ now, so I'm always trying to see if techniques can be modified to fit this environment. Agave stalks, particularly those of the Century Plant, are strong and can be hollowed out very easily; they have a fairly solid outer wall that'd take a lot of punishment (I've made several digereedus out of them.) Bet they'd work, and they're all coming nice and dry right now; I'll have to try them out.

Have you seen this tutorial? Make an approximately 45 degree cut on the bottom board to fit a small diameter tree. th-cam.com/video/H9c0Ani_Cak/w-d-xo.html
