Ford did not develop the assembly line. A Canadian company had already developed it, and was using it on a large scale. Ford simply appropriated the idea. His real innovation was shifting production to producing a cheaper cat that would reach a wider market. His usual tactic was to buy out anyone with an innovation --- and anyone who refused to sell faced his wrath and would be shut out of the market. The exception was P.L. Robertson, which developed the Robertson Fastener, far superior to anything else on the market. When Robertson refused to sell, Ford threatened blacklisting to any American company that bought Robertson's fastener ---- and fasteners were an essential element in millions of products. To this day, Canadians use the superior Robertson, while Americans are still stuck with the Phillips.
@@keeblebrox McLaughlin Carriage Company, based in Oshawa (just east of Toronto) developed the method for producing (horse) carriages. At one point they were producing one carriage every ten minutes. They had produced many innovations and had become a major force in that industry. In 1905 they started making automobiles. McLaughlin was taken over by General Motors in 1918 and merged into General Motors of Canada. They produced Buicks (originally McLaughlin-Buick), Chevrolets, Pontiacs and many other cars and trucks. From the very beginning, the Canadian and American industries were closely intertwined, with people, inventions, and managements moving back and forth across the border. Ontario's expertise in building bodies was integrated with Michigan's expertise in building engines (Detroit had started its industrialization with marine engines, Toronto with carriages and bicycles) to make the Great Lakes the heart of the auto industry. The lakes themselves made moving metals and other bulk goods easy in the region, and the already existing rail and canal networks did the rest. Not to mention the fact that Niagara Falls was the nucleus of electrification --- with Americans developing large scale generation and Canadians the technology of distribution --- making it possible to build large factories in any small city or town. Toronto was an electrified city by 1883, and by 1885 Ottawa became the first city in the world to light its streets electrically, followed quickly by other Canadian cities. We now think of the Great Lakes as the decaying "rust belt," forgetting how miraculous the region was for over a century. And apart from occasional tariff squabbles, the region on both sides of the lakes was socially and economically integrated from the 1880's, with goods and people moving easily back and forth.
