context is hard to give without spoilers but pretty much guts goes through the worst possible trauma from being a child, to a teen and then an adult. some of the most vile stuff you can imagine happens to him and his friends but he continues fighting to find peace in his life.
if you wanna experience berserk skip the animes and just read the manga. it seems weird at first but the character development guts goes through from his childhood to adulthood shows how to empathize with him and the story feels so real. when i finished it it really felt like i woke up from a nightmare lol
also the animes mostly dont do ANY justice to the pure ART the manga is. really some of the panels could be put up in an art museum and theres hundreds of them.
