- #berklee #berkleecollegeofmusic A. R. Rahman is an Indian composer, singer-songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist and philanthropist, known for redefining contemporary Indian film music, and putting Indian music on the global map, in a way that no other Indian composer/performer has achieved.
On October 24, 2014, Berklee College of Music conferred A. R. Rahman with an honorary doctor of music degree. Berklee faculty and students paid tribute to the living legend, who joined them on select pieces in a concert celebrating his music and life at Boston's Symphony Hall.
Mr. Rahman's visit was a signature event under Berklee India Exchange, a new initiative co-founded by two Indian Berklee alums, Annette Philip (artistic director), and Clint Valladares (artist relations and strategy), as a platform for cultural conversation, through the composition, collaboration, and performance of original Indian music. Proceeds from the concert went towards a scholarship fund in Mr. Rahman's name for students from India to attend Berklee.

I accidentally happened upon this video. It is one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs I have ever heard. Once I discovered its meaning, it brought tears to my eyes. I am not Indian, nor do I speak a word of Hindi, yet this performance carried me away to India and I felt the same deep longing for home. Thank you for touching my soul.
I'm not an Indian. I am an Afghan but this song makes me cry. Beautifully done! AR Rehman is a legend. Love him. Staying away from your motherland and seeing your beloved country go through war is a horrible experience. I hope no one goes through this feeling of not being able to do much to support your people for peace.
hajrulaswad I can understand. I had the opportunity of meeting afghans in hyderabad. They were very nice people and loved India but missed their mother land afghanistan a lot

I am born and raised in The Netherlands. I am a child of two generations Indians who were born and raised in Suriname (South America). But if you ask us what we are, we say that we are hindustani. The empty spot in my heart filled up immediately from the moment I walked out of a plain in india. Jai Hind! So doesn't matter where I go, hum lauth ke aayega.
I am waiting for AR Rahman to get Bharat Ratna. He has been great son of this great country. He has truly assimilated different style of regional music to reflect India at its core. Thanks ARR !!! I am lucky to live in your time.

I´m from México and I´ve been listening this song throught years, when I first found this song I couldn´t stop listening, then I went to the webb to a chat, and an person from India just translated to me, so touching the words, so touching the meaning and it just brings you some kind of redemption or peace or what ever it is but it just transports you to another state of mind, hits and warm your heart. I like a lot this song a lot, I like a lot the changes in the harmony, chords, voices, is just an amazing and peaceful song. Great India!!

To all my Pakistani brothers and sisters. We appreciate your loving comments. Much love from India!
Wonderful arrangement. I've been learning to play this on sanshin (Japanese instrument) for a friend. Let me tell you one interesting arrangement detail I found. The first time the verse melody starts at 1:13, it is one beat later than when it happens the second time, at 1:37 (beat "1-and" the first time, beat "4-and" the second time). This way, the arrangement sounds more organic, because the melody doesn't repeat the same timing exactly. But there's more. As she's singing the second time, the choir sings as well, but they sing like it's the first time (they sing one beat later). So the choir sounds like an echo of the lead singer! They come together at 1:48. The same thing happens at 3:24, but now two halves of the choir are singing both parts.
(At 3:47 they continue to sing two different parts, like call and response, while the "trumpet" (what is it called?) improvises... and then the ending comes, like a slowing-down version of the beginning.)
It's a really satisfying composition idea. My respect to the arranger.
Also, it's awesome to see so many nationalities of the people who performed this !!
India is really blessed to have composer like Rahman Sahab we love you a lot
Bangladesh , India , pakistan , nepal , afganistan is only divided by boundaries.
Remember All Brothers we are infinitely united by our culture of Indian only divided by boundaries ....
Don't Listen to to these politicians ..
We are infinitely united and no one can seperate us..

word
MEANING -
This country of yours, your motherland calls out to you..
this is a bond which can never break
how can you ever forget the scent of the earth (of your homeland)
wherever you go, you will come back.
in new paths (that you take), in quiet sighs
to your lost heart, someone will say
[the someone here is nothing but an inner voice of himself.]
Your life is saying to you,
you have achieved everything,
what's there that is still missing then?
as such, all comforts are there for you,
but you're far from your home
come, let's go back, O crazy one
where at least someone will call you their own
that country of yours calls you..
Don't you ask why there is
a two-way fork on the road..
[this represents a dilemma]
you are the one who should suggest the path
you are the one who would tell in which direction to take, that country !!! !!!
whats wrong? Is Everything Alright??
Yeah. Its just this Swades song cover(wipes tears)
I am from pakistan.. i listen this song 3 days back from barklee singer/students. i must say that Mr. A R Rehman you are great... this word is not enough for u but we have olny this in english. Further i also pray for the guys who sing it... God bless you all and you all STAY BLESS!!!!
If I had a Million Dollars, I would give it to you to continue! Your music is straight from God! You are all wonderful!
What a composition... You need to take birth in India to understand that feeling the lyrics Cary.. Thank you so much for this mesmerising composition ARR sir
The meaning of the film is very deep. Music, songs and background music actually breaks the heart. I am from Ukraine, but the topic of the Motherland is close to every nation. I come to India and the feeling that I have returned HOME does not leave me. Thanks for the hard work!
Movie: Swades
Music, Singer: A R Rahman
Lyrics: Javed Akhtar
A song with a patriotic sentiment, that talks about the dilemma of a successful immigrant over whether he should listen to his inner voice that wants him to go back to his native country and pay back to the people of that country.
yeh jo des hai tera swades hai tera
tujhe hai pukaara
ye wo bandhan hai jo kabhi toot nahi sakta
This country of yours, your motherland
calls out to you..
this is a bond which can never break
mitti ki hai jo khushboo tu kaise bhulaayega
tu chaahe kahin jaaye tu laut ke aayega
nayi nayi raahon mein dabi dabi aahon mein
khoye khoye dil se tere koi ye kahega
how can you ever forget the scent of the earth (of your homeland)
wherever you go, you will come back.
in new paths (that you take), in quiet sighs
to your lost heart, someone will say
[the someone here is nothing but an inner voice of himself.]
ye jo des hai tera swades hai tera
tujhe hai pukaara....
ye wo bandhan hai jo kabhi toot nahi sakta..
tujh se zindagi
hai ye kah rahi
sab to paa liya
ab hai kya kami
Your life is saying to you,
you have achieved everything,
what's there that is still missing then?
yoon to saare sukh hain barse
par door tu hai apne ghar se
aa laut chal tu ab deewane
jahaan koi to tujhe apna maane
aawaaz de tujhe bulaaye wahi des
as such, all comforts are there for you,
but you're far from your home
come, let's go back, O crazy one
where at least someone will call you their own
that country of yours calls you..
yeh jo des hai tera....
ye pal hai wahi,
jis mein hai chhupi
poori ek sadi
saari zindagi
It's this very moment,
in which there is hidden,
an complete century,
an entire lifetime.
tu na poochh raaste mein kaahe
aaye hain is tarah doraahe
tu hi to hai raah sujhaaye
tu hi to hai ab jo ye bataaye
jaaye to kis disha mein jaaye, wahi des..
Don't you ask why there is
a two-way fork on the road..
[this represents a dilemma]
you are the one who should suggest the path
you are the one who would tell
in which direction to take, that country..

A R Rahman is legend. Lots of love from Nepal
I came to the US just 3 months back for my Masters and I miss Bharat so much that as soon as I hear or see anything related to India, it brings tears to my eyes.
Bharat is a soul, an emotion that cannot be measured by how rich it is. Believe me, Bharat is ahead of any country in the world if you just don't compare them on the basis of richness.
I came to the US to learn and earn some money and I just can't wait to go back to India and build a small house there. Just counting the number of days and it has become the reason for survival now. It can take years but I will go back to my soul soon.
Jai Hind!
