The main difference was the situations. Roger was a big kid who wante to play with a new toy and decided to test the durability of Oden without demoloshing him. Shanks saw a threat to his friends and decided to cut the head off the snake quickly and cleanly and didn't hold back whatsoever, its also why he swung so wide to get Killer with the AOE

Really speaks to how strong Oden was that he ate that point blank, got sent flying through multiple trees and into a rock wall, and basically did the equivalent of pulling himself out of a Wiley Coyote shaped hole in the ground before jumping right back in, now that we know that even the Pirate King's apprentice is able to use it to wipe out entire ship crews and leave the affected area a burning wreck. That or Roger pulled waaaaaaaaaay back when he hit Oden just because he was only fighting for his jollies.
The difference is, Roger did the attack at like 30% only with no intention to kill or even hurt Oden. While Shanks' I think is at 70% with the intention to give critical damage.

I just realized something, Roger swung his sword to left, that's usually weaker. But Shanks, he swung his sword to the right, which is usually stronger.
There are several points to be noted… I went through some comments and also added some of my points 1. Oden was much more durable than kidd… as he was able to survive whitebeard and roger attacks. 2. Oden was ready while fighting roger and knew roger was going to attack, whereas kidd caught off guard. 3. Oden was not in his prime while fighting Roger. 4. Oden didn’t used any haki while attacking roger but kidd was fully infused with haki. 5. Roger attack broke several giant trees, while shanks attack didn’t even break a ship completely which was man made and was cut down easily by zoro… but here we can also say that most of the force of the attack of shanks was used over cutting kidd’s gun which was infused with haki… 6. Oden got up again, Kidd got knocked out. 7. Roger didn’t had any intent to kill Oden but maybe Shanks had. 8. Roger attacked in friendly way, on the other hand Shanks was serious. With all these points I think Roger’s attack was stronger or same as Shanks but not weaker.
Kid: 0-2 against Shanks, needed Law's help to defeat Big Mom. Oden: only lost to Kaido because of a distraction, stood in boiling oil for an hour while holding his 9 retainers over his head - and still needed to be shot in the dome. I'm a Kid fan, but I can't pretend that he's on par with Oden. Kid would be in for a fight with Navy Admirals, while Oden would easily wipe Akainu.
I like the difference movements between Roger and Shanks in the same attack. Roger swing his sword from righ to the left and Shanks move it from right to the left, probably symbolising the difference from predecessor and successor

We can say that Roger's OG version is already great due to how far it send oden, but shanks made it more nasty by juicing it up with advance conquerors... This comparison is interesting to me for a couple of reasons: Roger's attack was meant as a casual greeting and STILL had a stronger impact than Shanks' attack on the target (look how far Oden is flying), while Shanks' attack seems to be more damaging to the surroundings. In that case, seeing how Shanks not holding back too much wounded Kid that strongly while Oden was able to just tank Roger's attack, makes Oden even more impressive. It's actually insane he was able to stand up after this. In any case, I wonder how Roger's attack at full power would have looked like. I hope we will one day see a flashback of the actual fight during the godvalley incident.
The only difference is that Roger uses it as a friendly greeting. While Shanks uses it for a life and death situation. It's impressive that Oden survived the impact and not even a Devil Fruit user. It's nice to see Shanks use it as a homage to his late Captain.

Roger swung his sword like a bat with all the power focused on the impact of the haki shockwave that blew away Oden resulting in him flying so far but not knocking him out plus Oden was way more sturdy than Kid. Shanks's swing was more like a quick-draw slash with more power in the blade slash itself than the shockwave. I'd say Killer took roughly 2/3 to 1/2 the shockwaves power (he still got 1 shot) while Kid took the other part and all the damage from the slash. He still also got 1 shot and is probably dead but if he took the full blow then he wouldn'tve had that dream hallucination, just be dead and blasted off into the sea as he would have flown much farther had the full shockwave impact hit him at once.
Rogers was a greeting, don't forget when Whitebeard pulled up he planted his feet, used both hands and put his back in it. Shanks was ending something before it started.

It's just that the anime tends to over exaggerated what actually happen compared to the manga by unnecessarily extending what like 1 panel into a full 1 minutes scene due to how close the anime about to catch up with manga chapter. Like for example how long the clash between Luffy's king kong gun vs Doflamingo's god threads in the anime, when in the manga it's ended almost instantly.
I think what makes theirs so unique is that Roger wasn't intending on taking Oden's life, just showing off his power in what can be summed up as a playful brawl. Shanks on the other hand is fully intended on taking a life, because we've known that since day one that if you pull out a gun or use a sword around shanks then you better be prepared to put your life on the line. Their ideologies are so different and it's show so brilliantly without words.
While I still think that both Mihawk and Shanks STILL rival in power, one can still argue that Shanks back then isn't as strong as he is now. Shanks today might've lost an arm but he gained a more powerful ACoC, clashed with Yonkos, became a Yonko himself, has future sight, etc...
I think Kid is still alive because he still had his coat on his shoulder while drowning into the sea. Just like Doffy when he was defeated by Luffy. But Whitebeard lost his coat when he was pronounced dead. The importance of the coats/capes in OP is something really significant.

I kinda think Kidd was cushioned by that attack. The cannon tanked most of the attacked, add that with the fact Kidd's haiki is also conquer level, and his would've been sent flung to the ocean. Seeing this comparison made me realize the difference. Roger was basically playing with Oden and was caught off guard. The same could be said with Kidd, but given he is a powerful fighter himself he had just a bit more time to brace for the attack.

It was actually 2 shockwaves. The first explosion at 0:53 was from the damned Punk. The 2nd one at 1:00 was Shanks ACoC. So technically, Kid took two damages.
For those who say that Roger's attack was stronger, remember that the oden passed 5 trees, got stuck in the rock and was surprised to find him. It almost had no scratch... So he wanted it and Roger also didn't want to do him any harm. Kid and the killer lost consciousness and the rest of the crew fell under the Haki.. Oden may have been stronger than both, but Kid and Killer are also fine.
Roger flicked a yonko level with a smile and shanks sliced a almost admiral level with serious intent. But the real Difference is Oden was conscious and kid just went offline. He intentionally sliced Kid's own railgun and made it explode on him. This can also be seen with the combined black lightning (Shanks ACoC) and pink lightning which is the same energy signature as the Damned Punk.

Edit: He also imbued ACoC on the railgun resulting in a 2nd shockwave at 1:00. So this was an attack from two sides. One from Shanks himself and another from Kid's own weapon backfiring on him.

I just realized something, Roger swung his sword to left, that's usually weaker. But Shanks, he swung his sword to the right, which is usually stronger.
There are several points to be noted… I went through some comments and also added some of my points
1. Oden was much more durable than kidd… as he was able to survive whitebeard and roger attacks.
2. Oden was ready while fighting roger and knew roger was going to attack, whereas kidd caught off guard.
3. Oden was not in his prime while fighting Roger.
4. Oden didn’t used any haki while attacking roger but kidd was fully infused with haki.
5. Roger attack broke several giant trees, while shanks attack didn’t even break a ship completely which was man made and was cut down easily by zoro… but here we can also say that most of the force of the attack of shanks was used over cutting kidd’s gun which was infused with haki…
6. Oden got up again, Kidd got knocked out.
7. Roger didn’t had any intent to kill Oden but maybe Shanks had.
8. Roger attacked in friendly way, on the other hand Shanks was serious.
With all these points I think Roger’s attack was stronger or same as Shanks but not weaker.
I'm pretty sure Shanks hit that with no intention of killing. He was probably thinking " Please go and play somewhere else child. Daddy is busy ".

This comparison is interesting to me for a couple of reasons:
Roger's attack was meant as a casual greeting and STILL had a stronger impact than Shanks' attack on the target (look how far Oden is flying), while Shanks' attack seems to be more damaging to the surroundings. In that case, seeing how Shanks not holding back too much wounded Kid that strongly while Oden was able to just tank Roger's attack, makes Oden even more impressive. It's actually insane he was able to stand up after this. In any case, I wonder how Roger's attack at full power would have looked like. I hope we will one day see a flashback of the actual fight during the godvalley incident.
The only difference is that Roger uses it as a friendly greeting. While Shanks uses it for a life and death situation.
It's impressive that Oden survived the impact and not even a Devil Fruit user. It's nice to see Shanks use it as a homage to his late Captain.

Roger swung his sword like a bat with all the power focused on the impact of the haki shockwave that blew away Oden resulting in him flying so far but not knocking him out plus Oden was way more sturdy than Kid.
Shanks's swing was more like a quick-draw slash with more power in the blade slash itself than the shockwave. I'd say Killer took roughly 2/3 to 1/2 the shockwaves power (he still got 1 shot) while Kid took the other part and all the damage from the slash. He still also got 1 shot and is probably dead but if he took the full blow then he wouldn'tve had that dream hallucination, just be dead and blasted off into the sea as he would have flown much farther had the full shockwave impact hit him at once.

I think what makes theirs so unique is that Roger wasn't intending on taking Oden's life, just showing off his power in what can be summed up as a playful brawl. Shanks on the other hand is fully intended on taking a life, because we've known that since day one that if you pull out a gun or use a sword around shanks then you better be prepared to put your life on the line. Their ideologies are so different and it's show so brilliantly without words.

I kinda think Kidd was cushioned by that attack. The cannon tanked most of the attacked, add that with the fact Kidd's haiki is also conquer level, and his would've been sent flung to the ocean. Seeing this comparison made me realize the difference. Roger was basically playing with Oden and was caught off guard. The same could be said with Kidd, but given he is a powerful fighter himself he had just a bit more time to brace for the attack.

For those who say that Roger's attack was stronger, remember that the oden passed 5 trees, got stuck in the rock and was surprised to find him. It almost had no scratch... So he wanted it and Roger also didn't want to do him any harm. Kid and the killer lost consciousness and the rest of the crew fell under the Haki.. Oden may have been stronger than both, but Kid and Killer are also fine.
