The 10 Best Places To Live In Pennsylvania - Job, Retire, & Family - Around The World

  • Pennsylvania, a northeastern U.S. state and one of the 13 original colonies, has a diverse terrain, which includes wide stretches of farmland,
national forests, and mountains. Philadelphia, the Keystone State’s largest city, displays its rich history in Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, an enduring symbol of American freedom.
Pennsylvania is downright beautiful. It is home to some of the country’s richest history, incredible culture and, yes, a picturesque scenery.
The Appalachian Mountains sit here, and the state has more than 120 state parks, with over 100 miles of coastline, and a varied selection of great towns and cities,
    each with its own character.
Mountain climbers will love this state, so will surfers, skydivers, and skiers even, depending on where you are in the state.
Little wonder the Keystone State is widely considered one of the best states to retire.
The natural allure aside, this is a notion mostly driven by other key factors for anyone interested in the hard data:
economic vibrancy (this is the sixth-largest state economy), good health care, school districts that are a cut above the other states, affordability, low rate of homelessness and high quality of life.
Here then, are the 10 best places to live in Pennsylvania to help inform your decision better.
    10. Philadelphia. (good to retire, find a job, and raise a family)
    9. Pittsburgh. (affordable place to retire, job, raise a family)
    8. Scranton. (place for jobs)
    7. Allentown. (good for retirees)
    6. York.
    5. Lancaster. (best place to retire)
    4. Reading.
    3. Harrisburg. (best place to retire, find a job)
    2. Erie. (affordable city for retirees, young professionals)
    1. Jefferson Hills. (best place to raise a family)

As someone who has lived nearly my entire life in PA, these are not the best places to live. This video maker simply picked out the largest cities / towns and decided to make a video calling them the "best.' I honestly doubt this person has even been to PA. There are many great places to live in PA, but these aren't it.

  • @patrusso108

This list bears no resemblance with reality.
First, in PA we have a saying about York. "Come for the crack, stay because you're dead." York is a dump.
Reading is even worse, being one of the most dangerous places in the entire northeast. A rust belted former industrial city, it is the east coasts Detroit.
Lancaster honestly used to be nice, but all those rolling hills of agriculture are being paved over, and cost of living and crime have soared in the past decade.
Harrisburg, the capital, is to my knowledge the only state capital in which you can be mugged on the stairs of the capital building in broad daylight. Enough said.
Philadelphia is a pretty standard big American city. Expensive, dirty, and riddled with crime.
Erie is pretty, but it too is a rust belt city. Once your done at the lake you can get get drunk, because there's nothing else to do.
I've spent time all across Pennsylvania, and this guy has clearly never been there.

I live in Erie and have all my life. You can drive across the whole town in 15-20 minutes. Cost of living is low, and you can buy houses from $60K to $1M and most neighborhoods are decent. Inner city has its problems, so you’d want to stay away from there. The best thing is you’re 90 to 120 minutes away from Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Buffalo if you want to get away and enjoy some big city entertainment. And you haven’t lived until you’ve experienced “lake effect snow”! Very rarely does snowfall shut down the city. Erie is transforming itself from industrial to commercial and tourism businesses. We’re in the middle of 1/2 a billion dollars of new construction. A great place to raise a family.

I am originally from Allentown. I would not recommend moving there unless you are already familiar with the area. This is not a place for someone retiring if you want peace and quiet. It has become very expensive and if you think about purchasing residental property . Think twice. Most homes are very old and the city of Allentown has alot of rules and regulations (ordinances) that can make it difficult to rent your property and or sell it. I know from experience. Do your research prior to making a decision about moving to all the the places listed

Slippery Rock, Clarion, Indiana, Grove City, and some novel town names--Mars, Zelienople, Slatelick, Frogtown, the Ohiopyle area near the Youghiogheny River. I was an announcer for about 40 years. One of the first things I learned when I moved to an out-of-state station was the necessity of learning how to pronounce names like a local. A mispronunciation immediately puts your cred into question. When doing VO scripts, I made sure how to pronounce a place or a person. When an announcer clearly "knows" how something is pronounced and thoroughly screws it up, voracity is questioned. It's LANK-es-ter. Other cities ARE indeed LAN-KAS-TER, but not the one in PA. And the Schuylkill, despite what it may look like, is SKOO(l)-kill. Thank god you didn't have to pronounce "Amish."

@@MsSoundguy I grew up listening to WIBG (WIBBAGE), the orignal rock station. My first summer vacation from college WFIL (560) changed to rock format and the war was on! So yes, I split my time between Famous 56 and WIBG. Great story: WIBG announced they were doing a countdown of the top 100 hits of alltime. Big mistake, they printed the list in the newspaper in advance. WFIL played every song on the list, but just before it was to go on WIBG. So if someone went from WFIL to WIBG, they would hear the same song. I laughed for a week.

    4) No mention of how bad the schools are in some of these places.
    5) No mention of the unemployment rates or poverty levels most of these places.
    6) I was born and raised in Erie, (which is northwestern PA). Good luck getting a job that will pay a livable wage if you go anywhere with the exception of Pittsburgh and Philly. Erie is definitely a retirement town. If you want a job in your actual career field, (outside of the ones mentioned), you'll need to move to a larger metro area or work remotely.

Yeah pa seems to be a nice middle state. You have access to beach in NJ if you are on the philly side I guess Erie has its lake, mountains, it gets cold but not that cold it gets hot but not that hot no hurracaines or earthquakes...

I agree with everyone who's comments I read, 7th generation Lancasterian here. I absolutely love my State, but this guy should have titled his video the worst places to live in PA, especially for violent crime. My Husband is from York and every Saturday morning when we wake and turn the news on, we bet on which "local" municipality had the most shooting, stabbings, robberies, etc. Choices are always, York, Harrisburg, Lancaster, and Reading. Don't get me wrong there really are some good things about all these places, but you really need to spend some time acquainting yourself with just about every place he mentioned. This video could not even taken crime rates into consideration. Over the years, I have been through Watts in L.A., the Bronx, Camden and West Philly and West Baltimore and anymore we are just about as bad here now. Hell, Philly, Pittsburgh, Reading, Harrisburg and Allentown were all really bad forty years ago and they haven't improved at all, but Lancaster and York sure caught up since then. Take classes on situational awareness, take shooting classes, buy a weapon for personal protection, but also get a concealed carry permit and due you due diligence on the laws and regulations regarding self defense with deadly weapon. I also own some land in Sullivan County, the second least County in PA and you should probably pack a gun to go there or almost any northern tier county, just for the ears, the bobcats, and the copperheads.
We have so many beautiful, safe and quaint small towns and cities here in PA and this state truly is one of the most varied and beautiful states in America get out drive around vacation in PA I have been doing that a lot in the last ten years or so, it is my home and always will be. Drugs have pretty much destroyed most of this country, let alone a state so many of us love and call home. I am a bit concerned that this COVID-19 virus will really be setting us back with our economy here at a time when I believe that places he mentioned in this video were beginning to see some changes for the positive. I tend to be optimistic but always aware of situations and people around me, stay safe my fellow Pennsylvanians and get out into the countryside in PA and appreciate the natural beauty of this State and the majority of the good people trying to live their best lives.
To the gentleman who left nice remarks about Gettysburg, I loved day trips there so much as a kid, we sent our Daughter to college there and she loved her time in G-burg.

It IS WRONG to Compare ALMOST ALL this list to some place like the WATTS area of L.A. ! GET THIS RIGHT-- you ARE unfairly comparing apple to oranges!
WATTS is HORRIBLE, but that HAD to be the dumbest comparison! Try a REAL comparison like -- St. Augustine, FL. Austin. TX. Monterey, CA., Santa Cruz, ca, Bend, Ore. -- ANY one of those -- and you will NEVER, EVER step foot in the Pa. places you mentioned!

@@natashaday3657 There isn't much, I know that won't make many people from PA. happy, but, its true!
MANY, MANY of theses people have not SPENT SIGNIFICANT --YEARS in places that have a VERY GOOD ECONOMY, they DON'T really know what that REALLY looks like!
Ask yourself what are the top 5 -7 things you want in a place you live!
Gettysburg is one of the few nice areas! IT still does NOT have what is a REAL robust economy, it is quiet and nice -- with TOURISM as the biggest draw-- that is it!
The WHOLE western side of PA. has very BAD weather-- maybe that does not matter to you! Pa. will give you 4 seasons, no matter where you go.
if you want warmer, on the coast with the beach -- HILTON HEAD, SC-- very good economy and great housing! Savannah, GA -- gorgeous! great weather very good economy!
St. Augustine, Fl. -- warm, very good economy!
So much depends on what you want! The ECONOMY AFFECTS SO MUCH, so pick well, PA. is an example of the whole state getting older and hardly any economic growth! Again, set some STANDARDS for yourself in what the AREA AND surrounding areas economy looks like, AND is there -- SUBSTANTIAL, ENOUGH BIGGER companies ( high tech preferably) in the area!
If you want something more quiet and retirement based, you still want nice weather --- ALL YEAR ROUND -- to get around!
      What are your priorities?

It's obvious that no one involved in this video has ever lived in PA or even been to any of these places. Anyone out there looking for real information about PA, should look somewhere else.
