How can you possibly tell it's a male? You may be thinking of a male HOUSE sparrow. This sparrow in the video is a TREE sparrow and both male and female ones look the same. (male house sparrows have a much larger black area on the chest and grey on top of the head. Also no black spots on the cheeks)
Watching the ones I have at home, I think they fluff themselves up like that when cold or to make themselves look larger and to scare off threats. Because that cute fluffiness can totally scare you :)
That little one looks like the house sparrow who lives in the trees in my yard, I named her Fuzzy🐥 Shes a cutie pie that’s a little bit clumsy, somewhat of a loner, who likes to just sit on the ground and chill, usually the last birdie to head for higher ground (trees) at dusk, who has little fear even when the leader of the pack sounds the alarm She seems to prefer the lower branches of the tree, but will slowly make her way up, with a little hop, skip & jump💕🐥💕 I feed the wild birds and have quite a variety, mourning doves, rock doves, ravens, mockingbirds, a paired blue jay couple, and one male ladder-back woodpecker, maybe one day he’ll bring his lady bird along The sparrows live in my trees full time along with a few mourning doves, the rest of the birds spend the day enjoying the peace and quiet, lots of seed, a pie plate that they use a swimming pool, all in a safe environment free of cats The feathered friends resort where birds of feather flock together🕊🕊🕊🕊 Many of the birdies met their mates here🕊💕🕊 💕🌳🕊🕊🐥🕊🕊🌳💕 New sub, nice channel☺️

Your yard sounds like my yard😅right now with all of the feathered friends chirping up a storm 🌳🎶🕊🕊🐥🕊🕊🎶🌳 Fuzzy occasionally tries to hang upside down like a chickadee🐥 she’s currently trying to sit on a branch that she’s too heavy for she’s flapping her little wings trying to maintain her balance😅 She hops sideways, likes to sit on the little coral rock I found, quite the comic, she is definitely the standout bird in this yard🐥 I have a pack of little girl sparrows who are very territorial about their, not the electrical box😁 where I place seed just for them 🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊 It’s always the same little group, they’ll puff up their chests, flap their little wings, fan their tail feathers (they remind me of turkeys when they do that😂) and chest bust each other trying to knock one another off the box, all squawking away at the same time It’s pretty funny to watch and it’s always the girls instigating the rumbles 🕊🕊🕊🕊😄🕊🕊🕊🕊 I put seed there because the rock doves all of which I named Porky show up in packs, as many as 12, and polish off all of the seed I put out, so I have to find spots where they can’t fit😁 They’re welcome here too, smart and beautiful birds🐦🐦🐦🐦 BJ the Blue Jay brings his ladybird with him and finds her berries to eat, he takes very good care of his little ladybird ☺️🕊🕊 When he announces their arrival it gets very quiet until they land, then the squawk fest resumes😅 Some days it looks like Central Park in my yard 🐦🕊🐥🐦🕊😅 Always nice chatting with another bird lover😊💕🕊💕 Wishing you all the best as well☺️ Warm, very warm greetings from Florida it’s 86* or 30* Celsius where I am☺️ 🌴🕊🕊🕊🐥🕊🕊🕊🌴
