small correction to the video boost section:
-you *can* in fact record without HDR enabled, but still only in 30/60fps through the main lens or tele (no ultra wide)
-And apparently I didn't wait long enough for my boosted video to come back at 3:25... which is strange because I shot these clips well before I transferred them off device. But Google tells me that while the videos on the left are RAW and unedited, the videos on the right are not fully processed. Which, to me, speaks to how relying on footage to be processed off device should not be the answer to improving video quality on device, especially if someone who is versed in tech is misunderstanding the process.
Now that you're doing your own content separate of the Verge- when you review devices, do you need any permission or can you just pick up a device and make a video about it?
@ 4:45, I agree that software has improved, but the panorama isn't a direct replacement to what they currently have compared to the 8 Pro. Fully 360° panoramas on the new panorama mode do not actually render the full circle. The starting and ending position photos are omitted, which renders the full 360° panorama kinda useless.
I also don't like how they removed the metadata which allowed users to view panoramas as a photosphere in Google Photos too.
Other tech reviewers....take note !! THIS is what we consumers want as a review period !!! No frills, no thrills, just honest to goodness practical advice !! Loving this ❤🎉. Such a breathe of fresh air.

I think this kind of review mostly targets the hardcore tech and photography crowd which is chronically online on YT and spends hours comparing phones. Nothing wrong with that, I love Becca's videos, but I believe it would overwhelm the average smartphone user, who's better off with MKBHD or iJustine
Or you could use it normally and hope you don't run into this issue.

I fell out of the habit of watching Verge videos since it went from a "I'm really enjoying every video they put out" to a "I just watch Becca and Dieter videos" to a "I just watch Becca videos".

iPhone is better. Stop it. Why do android phones copy iPhones. I know andriod phones are packed with the newest and fastest hardware but Apple's software and hardware integration is unmatched. Why do they follow Apple with the stupid camera bump? Why not make the back flat, make the phone bigger with a bigger battery?

I have a Pixel 8 Pro, and I totally agree with you about the "issues" with the pictures and videos on these Pixel devices. But I think we, as tech and geek guys, tend to overthink every little detail, and a regular user probably won’t even notice. By the way, I’m a huge fan of Becca’s content creation journey as a solo creator. Keep shining, sweetheart!

Please test the dynamic range in photos, especially regarding the shadows. I find that my 15 Pro Max tends to crush the shadows quite a bit.
I think we could use more extensive coverage of the wide/tele cameras. Yeah, sure, I happen to know what a 12mm and 120mm are useful for, but average folk might get some inspiration from a photographer really putting that 5x to good use.
I want to find out if the portrait mood has gotten any better. I honestly think it’s one of the worst ones out there. Samsung has been leading in that area for a long time.
Skin tones. "Other" modes like slowmo and panorama
Glad to find you and to see that you're still producing content, Becca - keep at it! The little stuff like weird exposure changes while shooting video is the kind of thing that would drive me up a wall, too, it's worth mentioning and hopefully that discussion will lead to better smartphone video quality down the line.

THANK YOU. The biggest thing I hate about computational photography is the artificial brightening of the shadows to make everything look lit up. That is UNREALISTIC ASF. Shadows should be dark, bright areas should be bright. Simple as. Highly appreciate you pointing this out on the video.
This review is so much better and has much more useful info than any tech reviewers side-by-side-useless-zoom-in-pixel-peeping comparison.

Finally someone calling it out! I love the review, personally, I wish we could just somehow DISABLE ANY, if not ALL the computational photography, or release a seperate PRO app that allows users to just turn these things OFF.

Would love a more explicit test of the video audio capture! I’ve noticed recently just how good the iPhone pros audio is in video in tough situations.
Would love more night sight testing. I always felt like the pixels scored higher than the iPhone in low light, but that Google‘s processing of night photos usually felt over exposed and less… night-ish.
Lastly, I’d be curious to see if there’s much of a difference between the 9 Pro and the Fold camera system!

such a GREAT review! love it. my fav for the pixel 9 pro so far. so well flowing, with enough photos (MUCH MORE than enough) to look at and compare with. I mean ABUNDANT photos and we do just want to see the photos. Sure analysis here and there do help! But lots of people overkill giving the comment and this is just well on point. Lots of information to get in 8 minutes. What a crazy good review. Not even an exaggeration.

I appreciate reviews like this one, because at this point all I care about when I upgrade phones is the camera. I love that your review focused on that!
What I keep hoping is that someday a phone manufacturer will bite the bullet and just add a giant sensor to the phone, and focus on getting realistic high-quality shots that can go toe-to-toe with a dedicated camera like the Fujifilm X100VI. But with the focus on AI and the incremental hardware changes, I don't see that happening anytime soon.
Always loved this format; rather than flashy intros & specs lists, show us how the phone & camera behave in everyday usage. It would be great if, in future, you could include things like battery life, device getting heated up (pixel devices in the past have had this issue) or other real-world usability issues/features.
