Annapurna south face in winter is an astounding effort. Both deaths were said to be due to fatigue. These men were obviously first class climbers so it shows just how exhausting it is to climb high altitude in winter on one of the hardest high altitude routes. Perhaps if they were using supplemental oxygen they would have avoided falling. It's such an extreme climb that using gas would have been prudent.
The main tragedy is Ueli Steck. His first on Annapurna is by far the most important. But we have seen that Sherpa enjoy their title of “real heroes” except when better western climbers embarrass them. They have blood on their hands.
Another great mountain adventure/misadventure thank you!
Wow the footage around 4:50 and the absolute TEETHY FANGS of the sawing zigzagging ridge spaces is frightening! Love it!!
Thank you for telling about this great adventure und tragedy.

Their thin physique didn’t play into them losing limbs. The fattest of people will succumb to frostbite as well.
Thank you for that sad description of a climb i not heard about before. Keep your fine work up.
