You can't add too much onion for me. I love fried potatoes and onions, have never used season salt. May have to try that. Butter makes it all so good. That and a bit of bacon grease. Mmmmmm
Just a thought for everyone....while yours are good, you are cooking for over an hour. Try using a much larger skillet...get your oil and butter hot. I use about a third of a stick. Pat potatoes dry then put them in pan. Don’t touch them...they are fine. And seasonings cook first side 7 minutes. Now flip potatoes and add onions, check for taste leave them to cook 7 minutes on second side you are all done in half the time. By leaving potatoes sit they develop crisp edges that everyone at your table will want. Keys...large skillet...plenty of butter and oil...don’t move potatoes around once you put them into skillet...time per side is 7 minutes...taste before serving. Going to make some now.
I make mine exactly the way you described. I put them on the back burner on low while I finish making the rest of the breakfast. When it's time to serve, I use a spatula and flip them onto the plate. A beautiful, crispy brown lace-like crust forms and they are delicious! I serve with scrambled eggs and smoked sausage links split down the center and fried black 😂
When I was 15 in the 80s my dad was laid off from his blue collar job as a machinist. He found a job pumping gas. That year, before he found another job as a machinist, we ate potatoes every day. My dad made sure to provide for the family any way he could.

I sometimes make these potatoes with sliced hotdogs or pepperoni (whichever I have on hand) brown up everything then add in whipped up eggs to make a sort of potato fritatta.
Grandma seeved this whenever she served any kind of fish or fried oysters. Also she made her slaw with just fresh green cabbage, vinegar ,sugar and salt. She lived to be 103 ❤

When I was growing up in the 50's we had fried potatoes with onions and red beans for every dinner meal. Dad grew up very poor. Both mom and dad were quite frugal. He was an electrician, so we were not poor, and we had meat and bread with the meal. Today, I'm 77 years old, and I still love simple food. Thank you😊😊😊

When I was a kid, my uncle would set up a big camp in the mountains. He did potatoes and onions in a Dutch oven over a campfire. I still remember how delicious they were over 50 years later. My wife and I have made them since, but Uncle George could do magic with food.
Haha we had potatoes with onions every day I think of my young life! I’m 63 and still remember my childhood of my mother cooking potatoes along with some kind of dried beans❤❤❤❤❤

Thanks for the recipe. I am an older man (75) that just loves sweet onions. I cook home fries with sweet onions all the time. Will give your recipe a try. I have a 12" cast iron skillet and a 14" iron Wok, either would be good for the recipe. I think bacon fat would be good with them.
Oh yeah....any size skillet will work. My grandmother used to use bacon grease/fat also. and yes it enhances the taste. Thank you for viewing and commenting. Hope you subscribe and continue cooking with me as we prepare and share more fantastic recipes and tips. Love, love, Shar

Yes! The simplest pleasures are truly the best; topping the list...fried potatoes and onions. I'm 68 and i remember waking up to the smell of my mama's fried potatoes and onions (sometimes she'd shred the potatoes and onions before frying). She'd serve them along with eggs, pancakes, and bacon on weekend mornings. Thanks for reminding me of better days!

Todays problems are not been able to go out and eat at a restaurant. Cooking simple food is a forgotten art . I always cooked a meal from scratch . 76 and no health problems and still slim. Have eaten a lot of potatoes in my life and still do.
70 years ago, my mother fried potatoes/onions in a combination of bacon grease & lard. Made some really crunchy brown potatoes! Then in later years when she didn't have lard, she used combination of vegetable oil & bacon grease. She never had onion powder & rarely added anything but salt & pepper, always cooked in cast iron. We had them almost every day for the noon meal we called dinner along with brown beans cooked with bacon end pieces & served with cornbread baked in an iron skillet greased with bacon grease along with home churned butter. That was some good eating and what most poor folks in our area ate. Now past 77 and still love fried taters & onions along with cornbread & beans! Great comfort food any day!!!!

My widowed mother was feeding 3 kids on a low salary. Yes they are a nice addition sometimes. However, most times than not, onions and potatoes was all we had.....sometimes just potatoes and we loved it.
My mom (and now me) always made it fairly similar to you. Have always added a small amount of garlic powder to them. But I totally agree that lots of onions are almost mandatory.

Wow. My Mom used cast iron skillets to fix fried potatoes and a long iron griddle to fry salmon patties on the woodstove years ago......but Dad loved mashed or boiled potatoes the best. He was a farmer.
When we were kids my Mom would get a 50lb bag of potatoes 🥔 from the corner store for 50cents what a Blessing and my Mom would make this a lot and I just Truly Love every bit of it yummy yummy for my tummy and we made French fries 🍟 a lot and I just Truly Love French fries 🍟 mashed potatoes 🥔 potatoes 🥔 salad baked potatoes 🥔 boiled potatoes and cheese 🧀 on them too and all kinds of potatoes goodies and lots of pepper

I notice a lot of comments are from older cooks. I'm 76 and both my grandmothers and my mother made fried potatoes and onions. I later made them for my children. Of course, they loved them, but over the years, fried and starchy foods became something only to be eaten occasionally, not two or three times a week like we did. I still love them, but nowadays at my age, they are an occasional treat. I think I'd rather have them than a dessert! Thanks for posting this video!

When I was a kid, the middle of 9 living on a farm, my Dad lost his job….. thank goodness we had the farm, it kept all 11 of us well fed until he found a new job! We didn’t know we were poor nor just how tough it was. To this day I still love potatoes and onions but I throw in cut up hot dogs too! Yummy!!!!

Wow! That takes me right back to my Mom's kitchen when I was a kid! She used bacon grease to fry them, and no paprika. So delicious! Thank you for the trip down memory lane; now I need to go cook some!
Ditto for me, Silver! Mom didn't use the paprika, either, but sounds like good add-on. We used bacon grease, too; those potatoes can take a good amount of salt, for sure. Those golden taters, when you removed the lid, OH MY GOODNESS - I could smell 'em! Frankly, I REALLY liked the overcooked (ok, burned a bit) potatoes the best. You're right, the smell of the house was FANTASTIC!! Thanks for sharing. Y'all Be Safe!
This is about my most favorite food on earth. When I was married to my first husband a long time ago, we lived with his parents for a few months before we moved out of state. My father in law was a fabulous cook and could make a simple meal so delicious. This was one he made. He served it with Nathan's all beef hotdogs. Oh my gosh. I can still taste it. He's passed on and I miss them.
I am so honored to be able to share simple and delicious recipes that tap into our memory bank of happiness. Yes they are also great with smoked sausage. Appreciate ya much for viewing and commenting. Hope you continue cooking with me.
Finally someone who doesn't overuse tablespoons! You used closer to a teaspoon or the first few spices. But that's ok. You remind me of something I learned from my grandma that I always think of when I'm cooking. "You can't never have enough onions!" But I found one thing you can put too many onions in: chicken salad~! LOL it turned into onion salad~! Loved it and look forward to more videos from you! PS the three things my grandma loved were strawberries, tomatoes and onions!! She made a fabulous chili sauce that we all still love and enjoy today!! I made a batch last year from the tomatoes my friend let me pick after they had canned all they wanted last year!

Instead of frying, put the cut potatoes and onions In a baking pan. Coat with oil, salt and pepper and bake at 400 for an hour, tossing halfway thru. You can add frozen peas halfway thru also. Potatoes are soft and comforting

I am 82 years old and fried potatoes was one of the first things I learned to cook. I loved them crisp, but when my aunt and uncle came over I had to be sure and keep them soft because my uncle wouldn't wear his false teeth and just "gummed" his food!

My dad would make this dish (without paprika and with bacon). He'd cook it in a cast iron skillet over a hibachi in the back yard. It usually took him about 3 hours. He said it was a staple meal when he was out camping with his Boy Scout troop. I've never been able to replicate the recipe. And thank you for NOT putting garlic in the recipe. I used to love it, but now it gives me heartburn that requires 1 Famotidine and several Tums to tame.

Fantastic traditional goodness. Everybody want some. I found a use for printer paper and line all around the splatter zone (ha) with the printer paper, cheaper than paper towels, double it up, it works. I don’t drain on it as it got some chemicals in the paper. Brown paper bags tore up for that. Thank you so much for the great recipes.

Fried potatoes and onions are probably my favorite food. I don’t know of anyone who doesn’t agree. When I start making them, everyone ends up hanging around for some lol.
I loved when my Mom made home fried potatoes and onions. You could also add big(hot or sweet) sausage links and fry it all together. Add a little butter too. Yummy
I’ve been making fried potatoes and onions for years but I never run w the potato slices off or cover them with a lid when frying. Covering them only creates steam making them steamed potatoes and onions. Leave the lid off and let them fry and crisp up a bit, they will taste even better.

I like to add a little water to the skillet, a little butter, chicken bullion, a few flakes of crushed red pepper, onion, chopped celery of you have it, maybe half a slice of bacon and cook that slow with the lid on. Using chicken bullion adds flavor and you don't need to add salt.
I Love It,....Thank you so much for sharing your spin; I will definitely have to try it the next time I make it. Thank you for viewing and commenting. Hope you SUBSCRIBE and continue Cooking With Me as we discover delicious recipes and helpful tips. Happy Cooking! love love, Shar
I have done the above and put it all through the food processor making the potatoes as thin as potato chips. They are great like that. What you have leftover can be used to help out a pot of potato soup in the winter. Maybe 2 cups water and cook a cutup onion and couple of pieces of celery. I add a little crushed red pepper early on for color and a little heat. Then a can of cream of chicken or mushroom, chicken bullion, butter, olive oil, can of mushrooms and when you're happy with it, onion and garlic powder. I never or rarely add salt because of the bullion. Thicken with a half cup or so of milk or water with cornstarch or flour mixed together and then added to it. Bring to a boil, add this thickening and let it come back to a boil. When you're happy with it, add the leftover potatoes and maybe some frozen peas, brocoli or what have you. Peas and carrots go great in this but I add it at the last so it's not overcooked.
@@therealkitchen4realpeople956 , I cook mainly with bacon in the wintertime. What I found that I like is to take a slab of bacon half frozen and slice it in slivers. I then freeze it on a plate that can then go in a baggy or vacuum sealer until needed. Saves money as I don't use that much bacon.

@@cherriaydelotte8327 Me too🥰 This is such an awesome recipe.
Yes, great comment. Love to hear different ways of cooking recipes. Thank you for viewing and commenting.

I use a small skillet also. It's just me and mine have crispy edges and acrunch. Delicious. I think her how is for show purposes.
Thank You, I plan on cooking some for Breakfast Supper tonight, and I will use your delicious suggestion 😋
I do onions and potatoes butter seasoning put in tin foil pkg on BBQ, also use Montreal BBQ seasoning just adds that extra taste.
When I was 15 in the 80s my dad was laid off from his blue collar job as a machinist. He found a job pumping gas. That year, before he found another job as a machinist, we ate potatoes every day. My dad made sure to provide for the family any way he could.

My dad would always let me choose which baseball hat would be his cooking hat the for the day, and I'd go and pick out which potatoes I wanted him to fry up. I always think of him when I make them.
It's one of my favorites too. As you keep making them, you'll build memories with those around you. Thank you so much for watching and commenting.
So honored to be able to share this simple and delicious recipe that tap into your memory bank of happiness. So sorry you can no longer eat them. Appreciate ya for viewing and commenting. Hope you SUBSCRIBE and continue Cooking With Me.

@@therealkitchen4realpeople956 it was dee-licious !! I cut the potatoes thinner than you so they cooked faster & crispier. I've never before put paprika on potatoes but it was great.

Great tutorial. My mom made these too in a large cast iron pan. Our family called these RAW FRIED POTATOES AND ONIONS. That was distinguished from cooking cold boiled potatoes the next day. Those were called simply FRIED POTATOES. We loved them both. Thank you for the practical reel and visit to memories. 💕

I could eat fried potatoes with onions for every meal everyday of my life! I love to grate cheddar cheese on top before taking out of the pan & sometimes a bit of hot sauce too. But just plain, they are delicious 😋

My Mom would sometimes use powdered dried thyme and celery salt, especially in the fall and winter. Fall and winter were the months that sausage was made, and thyme and celery salt were typical things to add when making sausage.

Fried potatoes and onions are probably my favorite food. I don’t know of anyone who doesn’t agree. When I start making them, everyone ends up hanging around for some lol.
Yes fried potatoes and onions seem to be a great crowd-pleaser. Appreciate ya much for viewing and commenting.
Wow! Thank you for sharing that great tip. Will definitely give it a try next time I cook them. Appreciate you watching and commenting,. Hope you subscribe so you can start getting free recipes automatically. Please be sure to share with others.

I would be shocked if anyone out there have never made fried potatoes and onions lol. I never put a lid on my pan either, I like my potatoes with some crispness not steamed. I love fried potatoes and onions yum!❤

@@southernguy35 Sounds delicious! I will have to give it a try.
