Jeju is a variety of Korean that is considerably different from standard Korean. It is spoken on the island province of Jeju, which is located about 60 kilometers south of the Korean peninsula.

Jeju language is originated from Korean peninsular. But in ancient times, there was a country called Tamna in Jeju island and the origin of its language is unclear. It appears to be related to ancient Japanese or Baekje language.

The jōmon people probably lived in there, but left jeju and then yayoi people came to jeju
I love this new format of language introductions. Not only sample texts, you also know some brief culture of the language speakers.
The Dolhareubang culture of Jeju Island is presumed to be influenced by Polynesian or Mongolic culture. Also, in Jeju island, mysterious thing is that there are some cactus growing naturally and their origin is unclear. The same species are growing in Mexico. The most powerful theory is that the seeds came to Jeju Island hundreds of years ago by the Kuroshio Current. Probably Jeju island has some relationships with pacific culture.

다른 사투리들은 그래도 어느정도 알기는 쉬운데, 제주 사투리는 참 알아듣기 힘들긴 하죠.. 그래서 대중매체에서도 나올 땐 자막이 붙어서 나오거나 하죠

As korean speaker, (sorry disregard my profile..) I realised what you said initially was 편안호꽈? Which means similar with Annyeong hasaeyo in standard korean.
Jeju mal is almost extinct language, I went to Jeju, just because my junior's hometown was Jeju island back when I was 20 yo. (No I am 28) and I was a bit disappointed that the locals speak only approximately 2-40% of the dialect, now it seems like it became relatively Creol form of mixture (standard korean + Jeju)
Though I was disappointed, we came across some granma who would speak perfect Jeju mal, it is Too quick and korean speaker only understood 10%. (A way faster than the record)
As korean speaker, there are seemingly 5 dialects in S korea, and also if the jeju mal is written in character, We can understand. But when it is spoken, I think we can not consider it as 'dialect' even.. So I think that is why Jeju mal has been categorized as different language group? But Genuinely, if they speak slowly, we can understand 8-90%, and 90% if it is written.
If anyone intersted in knowing how majority of koreans understand the spoken language when it is spoken by local pure nanny, this is perfect example!

This is an interview where the local nanny talked, and they started typing English because they genuinely could not understand what she was saying, so they just typed "would like to hater yada yada" to express how they feel as if the nanny was rapping..
So in a way is like us Romance lenguages between one another. Most will tell you that spoken (depends on the lenguage you speak (how much vocab you know) and the other you hear) you understand like 1 to 10%, but spoken is far ,uch more easier to translate (as in, reading whole texts in other lenguages and more or less knowing general concepts type of easy)
생각해보면 저 어릴때 경상도 정말 나이 많으신 할머니 할아버지들 본격적인 사투리로 말하시는거 들으면 이해를 못했어요. 보면 제주어만 별개로 구분하는 추세던데 그렇게 따지면 옛날 방언들도 말로 할 때는 알아듣기 힘들기는 마찬가지 아니었나 싶기도 하고 그러네요.
사실 사투리들이 알아들기가 진짜 힘든게 어휘나 문법소들이 좀 다른 것도 있겠지만 그것보다 말의 억양이냐 템포가 표준어랑 너무 달라서 이해가 어려운 것도 큰 것 같네요.
