It's Kind of a Funny Story is one of my favorite contemporary because it does speak about suicide in an honest manner. I feel like many people see suicide as something that only really sad people consider. This book showed light to the different dynamics of suicide and mental illness in general that I think really broke down some stereotypes that are typically affiliated with this topic.

Yay! I thought it was such a great YA novel about mental illness and suicide.

The first book I ever read from Jenny Han was "Shug" when I was in middle school. Looking back on it now, even though the book was about Shug's first love, the family dynamic was easily the bread and butter of the story. I loved it and I'm hoping to read more Jenny Han this summer :)

I just recently read A.J. Fikry and really liked it! But one book that is kind of similar to that one is Fredrik Backman's novel "A Man Called Ove". You know how hard it is to answer the "what's your favorite book?"-question? "A Man Called Ove" has been my answewr to that for a very long time now, and I think it will be still in a few years. If you haven't read it yet, please do! It's wonderful!!

I also don't gravitate towards contemporary all that much when I'm reading. I mostly read paranormal and fantasy but I do have some favourite books that are contemporary, some of my favourites are The History of Love, All the Bright Places, We Were Liars and The Edge of Never duology. I also really want to read Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe and I think I'm in the very minority of people who disliked I'll Give You the Sun.

Like you, I generally don't gravitate towards contemporary (let's be real. The majority of the books I read are fantasy). But I have enjoyed all the contemporary novels I've read. But I think the only book you mentioned in your video that I've read is To All The Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han which I enjoyed a lot (have yet to pick up the sequel but do want to at some point). I have been eyeing Aristotle and Dante discover the secrets of the universe for quite some time. My bday is coming up. I think that's one book I want to get. I've also read some of Rainbow Rowell's other books (E&P and Fangirl) and loved both of them. I do want to get around to reading her other books at some point. I love The Book Thief (probably my favorite stand alone). So there's probably a good chance I'd like I Am The Messenger. Great video:)

Yuuki Chan I predict that I'll end up loving it! I actually plan on reading I'll Give You The Sun after my current read (The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson). I probably shouldn't read another fantasy novel after one of the books in the Mistborn trilogy because I'm just going to end up comparing it lol. So I want to read something that's contemporary since it's a completely different genre and I'll be less likely to subconsciously compare.

Hm. I have only heard people describe Aristotle and Dante's as an LGBT book but you called it a boy friendship. I wonder, then, are you saying that it's a friendship between two gay boys or are you saying that they aren't gay? I'm surprised that no one else asked about this already. I haven't read the book yet but I own it and am looking forward to it very much, both because it seems to be a beloved story, and because of it being generally described as an LGBT book.

Perhaps it's just me but I think "I Am the Messenger" is quite well-known Zusak novel, too. You should check out "Underdog" by him, the cover is the ugliest thing I've ever seen and I probably wouldn't have picked it up if it hadn't been recommended to me by someone in my form ... but it is truly, truly beautiful very short but it really touched me and especially since you said that you liked reading about family I'm sure you'd love this.
