  • I finally got around to dyeing my LV Houston bag! For this video I take you through with me step by step with me in figuring out how to do it (after having researched just a wee bit). I'm hoping that listening to me share what I am doing along the way will inform you and inspire you to do the same for a similar type of project you might be thinking of.
    I repeatedly said "Angelese" for Angelus brand dye throughout the vid. Apologies. Sorry also for my roses in the background, which I neglected to notice were in a state of near death.

    The Louis Vuitton Houston bag measurements:
    12" L x 5" W x 10" H (30.5 cm: x 12.5 x 25.5)
    strap drop: 7.5" (cm: 19)
    I bought my LV Houston bag from Mercari in Japan (have to be based here and be Japanese proficient to use the app), but check my affiliate favs if you live elsewhere:

    Wow, this looks absolutely stunning. I purchased a yellow Vernis and on the images it looked amazing and I got a fabulous deal on it when it arrived there was a lot of discoloration and a lot of odor and just not a very pretty bad so I decided I was going to go ahead and try dying it black so I watched your video and to my amazement. I am absolutely stunned with the results. I cannot wait to do this on my bag that turned out amazing thank you so much for sharing all of your details and insight. @sentgourmand FABULOUS I can't believe you just popped up today as I was just about to return a green Venis LV back to Japan because it arrived far more discolored than disclosed. But now I think, I'm going to take the plunge! 3 questions: I'm just terrified about getting the fabric dye on the interior, how did you prevent that? And, what did you use to remove the paint from exterior hardware, and the fabric dye from the zipper? Toothbrush and acetone? Did the fabric dye/fabric paint turn out to be color fast and fade resistant? I am so very grateful to you for this, as it terrifies me a little lol. Thank you so very much for your help.

    • @SCENTGOURMAND
      @SCENTGOURMAND  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Sorry for the long wait! I guess I might be too late - did you already try it?? Re getting dye on the interior, I simply took my time, but if you are really worried, you could use painter's tape to guard the parts you're worried about. Re the Zipper, you can actually buy fabric dye for that, which is what I think I did(?), but on another bag I just used the same dye. The worry is, however, that it may run or melt if it gets wet in future. I've not had a problem, but I am not certain... Acetone works fine on the metal - just a cotton swab would be better than a toothbrush. PS - I understand the hesitation. The first time is daunting! And the risk s real (check my video on the other patent leather LV bag I did: I basically gluend flint into the side of the bag!!!)

    • @leelei4636
      @leelei4636 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @SCENTGOURMAND you for your time in answering me! Somehow I missed it lol. Well, I did it! It came out so/so. Not sure how, but air bubbles got into the dye upon application and they only got worse when I wiped after 30 seconds (I don't think they are fibers). Which caused me to hesitate wiping again. Which caused pooling and streaks. Although it did come out shiny! I'm thinking of trying to take the dye off and starting over, just not sure how to do that yet. The Fiebings leather sheen only made it worse (is it supposed to be so runny, or did I get a bad batch from Amazon?). Sigh. The zipper was the least of my worries, that came out fine and I used a fabric dye pen as you did (thank you). The biggest heartache came from the leather straps. I tried to keep the natural vachetta because they were in such amazing condition. I used liquid masking tape on the front leather "lapels" then covered with painters tape and wrapped the painters tape on the handles. The liquid masking tape was a mistake. Not only did it do a so-so job on the lapels, but it adhered to the perfect bright stitching on the lapels and I'm having a helluva time getting it out. Doesn't stick to the leather tho which was what I tested it on. Sigh. I may have to paint the handles black if I can't get it off. Any thoughts? I'll be your best friend if you have a working suggestion :) Regardless, THANK YOU & love your videos. XO

    • @SCENTGOURMAND
      @SCENTGOURMAND  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@leelei4636 Oh no! Sorry for the pain! Yes, the liquids are runny. The trick to the dye is to put it on very thin - one layer at a time. The thinner it is the more air bubbles might appear, but actually, most do go down when you wait. What is the current texture of the finish on your bag? If it has fibers in it, I'm afraid that might be it. But if it's just a case of needing more color and a better finish, you could just do it again. I would not recommend stripping it again... Now as for the straps, vachetta will pick up EVERYTHING because it is not sealed/finished/protected. Even if you do use painter's tape, you have to be careful! If it adhered to the stitching, I'd guess that the painter's tape was perhaps subpar? I never experienced that issue. If you take a very tacky (non-paper!) packing tape - the stuff that is supposed to peer off without residue and pat it on to the residue left on your bag, you might be able to lift it off gradually. Good luck!

      @@SCENTGOURMAND p.s., I did use the wool dabbers that came with the Angelus black leather dye (can't get Fiebings dye delivered to us in SoCal for some reason), and still got air bubbles and streaks. Maybe the application was too thick? Maybe the rag (cut up clean white cotton t-shirt) was the wrong type of rag? No clue. :(

    • @SCENTGOURMAND
      @SCENTGOURMAND  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@leelei4636 Yeah, any multitude of factors. I did use the dapper and I remember the liquid being very thin. It goes on very streaky at first (esp with thin layers). I suspect you should perhaps have gone with thinner layers? And more of them? In any case, don't give up - it may still be fixable! Excellent Job!!! Prior to your video I always viewed that particular LV Tote as one of LV's ugliest creations, haha! That yellowy, patent leather "echh" color, paired with vachetta leather seems to look awful regardless of the condition of the bag. (My sincere apologies to those who have enjoyed the bag!) As it turns out, LV did many a favor by the making the bag an easily 'dyable' color, and you've managed to make it look amazing! Well Done!! I have to second the other commenter who mentioned the perfection of that vachetta! Wow, looks like perhaps it was re-done by LV. I do understand why you dyed it though. Quick question... did you end up using mostly the Angelus paint on the Vachetta (you started with what you had left), or did you eventually switch over to the Dye? They look great so just wondering which you used to create that finish on the handles. Thanks! As a side note, the square hole in the Angelus paint box is to set the jar in so it won't spill. Not sure if the Fiebings Dye has that or not. Sorry for such a long post!

    • @SCENTGOURMAND
      @SCENTGOURMAND  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      haha - I thought the same of this bag. Dye can change anything. I found out about the Angelus box design a wee bit later. Sadly, it was a while back when I dyed this now and I cannot distinguish one dye from the other in my head. I think for the vacchetta, either brand will do. Actually, I like both brands equally. I did buy a low gloss finish in both brands, though, if I recall correctly (not a flat matte black, but not glossy, either).

    I watched a tutorial that said when you apply color to the dab it off on a bit of paper towel first to avoid pooling and too much product being applied. They also said that do one coat in one direction and then turn the bag a quarter way then apply in the other direction before applying dye again.

    • @SCENTGOURMAND
      @SCENTGOURMAND  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, that'd work! Whatever you can do to avoid pooling is fine. Applying in another directions makes sense, too. This would be to avoid a streaking effect. When I rubbed my bag down, I used a circular motion for the most part, if I recall. I think tips like this are all the more important if you're doing something other than black.

      Hello, Maria. The two dye companies I mentioned are fiebing.com/ and angelusdirect.com/ Those websites are good at telling you what products to use for what leather and effect. Just make sure you get dye, and not paint. You can get different colours, tones, and finishes. I would go for gloss if you're doing patent leather. The leather conditioner I used was from Cadillac, I think. Everything else is products from where I live in Japan, I think, so that will unlikely help you, unless 日本に住んでいますか? Hi there - cheers for the comment! I passed mine on to my mom soon after finishing it and doubt she’s used it a lot (lots of time at home theses days), so can’t speak to it’s condition, but in all honesty, I think cracking might be inevitable when it comes to dying patent. The better you prep the leather the better, but some of those seams will be tricky. I wouldn’t though out my supplies for a while. If it does happen, it can be fixed! :)

    How is the bag holding up? I did a bag like this for a girlfriend, and it ended up chipping in places. When you put the sheen on, did you let it sit and wipe it away, or just put it on. Thanks!

      If the hardware is cheap quality, it might affect it with enough repetitive scrubbing. But LV hardware is pretty resilient. It might be just brass plating (these days - It was likely 100% brass back in the day), but it is still brass. Not adverse effects in my experience so far!

    • @SCENTGOURMAND
      @SCENTGOURMAND  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question. It was probably an off-white or cream that severely yellowed with time. There are a lot of patent leather bags form that era that are yellow, and it's not a good yellow. I have seen some like new in a whitish colour, so that is my guess, Mary Ann! That said, it could very well have been a much nicer yellow to start with, but I'll put my chips down on a cream. ;)

    • @SCENTGOURMAND
      @SCENTGOURMAND  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jennifer! Yes, I noted mine was foggy too, initially, when I first put in on. If you put on the leather sheen final coat too thickly, this can happen. In my case, I just kept buffing the bag (elbow grease!) and it shined up. Note that if you’re doing a vintage piece, there’ll likely be less shine. If your bag is already dry, I’m afraid I’m not sure... maybe wet the bag again with a little sheen and keep buffing? You can always contact the company for advice. What colour is your bag now, by the way?

      Hey, Soccer mom. Was is during the dye process or the resolene/ finishing phrase that you got lint/dust stuck in? Not that the question necessarily matters, as I don't honestly know what to do in this case, but I am thinking that if it's more to the surface, I would just use it and hope that it would wear down/off (possible if in the handles?). You could try rubbing it or rubbing it with water? Sorry this happened to you, and sorry I don't have the answers. I do think that stripping it could cause a lot more damage to the surface...
