Freddie wrote a whole range of songs about a fantasy world, this is one of those songs. The song is about a pirate Queen. It starts with a battle on the sea. The story starts with the narrator, they are preparing for a battle. It is the calm before the storm. Waterbabies were magical creates in a fairy-tale world who lived in water, it comes from a popular Victorian book. The waterbabies are still playing and everything is still fine before the attack. Blue power monkeys was a term used for the soldiers who used to shoot the cannons on the ships. The gunpower would make them appear blue. So the story says, "Blue powder monkeys praying in the dead of night". Then the Black Queen attacks, you hear her giving out orders, "take this, take that, bring them down to size". The Black Queen wins the battle and she takes them hostage, they are placed bellow in the cellar. Then they are tortured, their finger and toe nails are pulled out one by one. You can hear her say "every finger nail and toe, we've only began, keep making all of that noise". They can scream in vain she does not care. But then she decides to seduce the narrator, "you can be my sugar baby, you can be my honey-chile". The narrator is conflicted about the situation. "In each and every soul lies a man very soon he'll deceive and discover". But in truth, he has already fallen for the Black Queen, he likes her command and power, as he listens to her giving out orders. He has fallen under her spell, "I'll be your bad boy, I'll do the march of the Black Queen". But there is also some clues that perhaps she is not as evil as she seems, "she never dots her "i's". She is basically just on the opposing side of the war. In the end he thinks back to his old life, "forget your singalongs ands you lullabies, surrender to the city of the fireflies." He fully embraces his new life at the end. Basically the song is like a whole epic story in one. There are a lot of Victorian references in the song, which makes it quite tricky to decipher.

The story goes that Freddie Mercury was writing a fantasy novel at some point. A lot of his early songs has a fantasy feel and story. He likely learned a lot of Victorian stories while he was in a British boarding school in India. India had strong connections with Victorian England, and they were still under British rule at the time. You can find a lot of interesting words in Freddie Mercury’s early songs. Other examples of songs include My Fairy King, Seven Seas Of Rhye, The Fairy Fellers Master-Stroke, Ogre Battle, Lily Of The Valley and The Great King Rat. You should definitely check out The Fairy Fellers Master-Stroke, it is a really short song, written about a painting, there are quite a few strange words, and the song is so unique it is difficult to ascribe a genre of music to the song, the song even has a polka in some parts!

It could have become a hit like "Rhapsody" if they released it as a single...
This song does require a reset on a couple of occasions. This is a very intricate piece of music with some outstanding changes. This is a Mercury write, White Queen was written by May so they are rightly different.
That is one of the main things about Queen for me, everything is so unexpected from one song to another, inside each song, even one word can have so much shading. It's not like most music that has a tune, a timing and they stick to it throughout. Even though I've listened to many of the songs over and over they are never boring and you even discover new things as you keep listening. I can't think of one to point you to that you won't like. One I do like is Millionaire Waltz. A lot of Freddie's early songs have a very ethereal, mysterious quality. Before Freddie died he told the guys they could do what they wanted with his stuff but never to make him boring.

I just went and watched 4 or 5 versions and there are a couple live versions but I think the two official versions are best. Lyric version if you want to be sure you get the words although Freddie enunciates very well, the other official version has some scenes from the live performances but the studio sound. I do recommend this song! It's from the A Day at the Races album, 1976. Another very different song where the band vents their wrath against an old manager is Death on Two Legs. It's from A Night at the Opera 1975. I watched the official lyric version again just now and laughed out loud a couple times at the insults they came up with. It's a fast paced rock song. Fun song. LOL
“This song is kind of bipolar”! 🤣 What a great description. In an interview Roger talks about how hard they worked on this. They overlaid the old style tape so much that it was almost transparent. I think Freddie was just throwing in interesting phrases and not worrying too much about the meaning. Called the younger brother of Bohemian Rhapsody (Innuendo is called the older brother). Have you done Killer Queen? Can’t remember. If not you should complete the “Queen” in the title songs.😊

You know a Freddie song when you hear it, especially the early stuff! 😂 Theatrical, drama filled, intricate lyrics and musical instruments? And harmonies. Bryan’s songs tended to have noise, he says in the One Vision documentary that he liked the noise of One Vision. But he can also be very delicate as well. I think you you should try "Another One Bites The Dust " Queen was not going to release it as a single. In fact it barely made it on to the record. Michael Jackson heard it at a show and insisted they release it as a single. It shot straight to the top of the charts and stayed there forever. Written by bassist, John Deacon, I've heard it's about the Valentine's Day massacre. Great reaction!

Freddie liked Johns style of music the other two didn't they dismissed AOBDT it wasn't finished,John said in an interview when asked how did he present his songs to the band he said I don't I take them to Freddie he's the singer but he didn't even show Freddie his original lyrics! just the riff the main idea and a few lines Freddie said to the others I'll help him I have a good feeling about this trust me! John is fully credited but Freddie helped him and pushed it to be on the album Freddie played it to Michael Jackson and when he saw his reaction he thought yes! But the deep cuts of Queen albums truly show their immense talent more so than the commercial hits. Queen II is an entire story from song to song. There is a video by ArsonArt giving his analysis of the album and many agreed after he broke it down song by song. All Queen albums, per the group, are meant to be played as on the record as opposed to "shuffle " to get the most out of the time they put in on how each song should be placed on the album. Queen II is a perfect example. Check it out.

He's the one who told them to put out ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST as a single, which went to #1 and many people thought it was a song by black performers. Loved your deeply detailed enthusiasm for Black Queen AND all the deeply informed Queenie comments that followed. You can't go wrong with all their suggestions but this would be a good time for In Lap on the Gods at the Rsinbow Theatre 1974. It was an early anthem and Roger's ethereal high notes are stunning.
I would highly suggest "The Prophet's Song" for you to react to by Queen. It took me a few listens to fully appreciate the song. It is a long song, but well worth it. I love your reactions and your channel.

This song does require a reset on a couple of occasions. This is a very intricate piece of music with some outstanding changes. This is a Mercury write, White Queen was written by May so they are rightly different.

That is one of the main things about Queen for me, everything is so unexpected from one song to another, inside each song, even one word can have so much shading. It's not like most music that has a tune, a timing and they stick to it throughout. Even though I've listened to many of the songs over and over they are never boring and you even discover new things as you keep listening. I can't think of one to point you to that you won't like. One I do like is Millionaire Waltz. A lot of Freddie's early songs have a very ethereal, mysterious quality. Before Freddie died he told the guys they could do what they wanted with his stuff but never to make him boring.

@@RadJarrettTheIntrovert Freddie said they did some 1920s vaudeville and Millionaire Waltz is a good example of a fusion of vaudeville and rock. I just went and watched 4 or 5 versions and there are a couple live versions but I think the two official versions are best. Lyric version if you want to be sure you get the words although Freddie enunciates very well, the other official version has some scenes from the live performances but the studio sound.
I do recommend this song! It's from the A Day at the Races album, 1976.
Another very different song where the band vents their wrath against an old manager is Death on Two Legs. It's from A Night at the Opera 1975. I watched the official lyric version again just now and laughed out loud a couple times at the insults they came up with. It's a fast paced rock song. Fun song. LOL
“This song is kind of bipolar”! 🤣 What a great description. In an interview Roger talks about how hard they worked on this. They overlaid the old style tape so much that it was almost transparent. I think Freddie was just throwing in interesting phrases and not worrying too much about the meaning. Called the younger brother of Bohemian Rhapsody (Innuendo is called the older brother). Have you done Killer Queen? Can’t remember. If not you should complete the “Queen” in the title songs.😊

Freddie wrote this song before Queen was a band and the same is true for Brian and White Queen. They brought these songs into Queen and turned them into amazing masterpieces.
This song is one that I just never try to analyze. Just enjoy the music and that beautiful voice. Truly equivalent to a roller coaster. It will be a task to find a Queen song you don’t like!! I’m an old Queen fan, and I can tell you that when you brought home the new record, you KNEW it was going to be different from the last album. We never had any idea what was coming next but we knew Queen would deliver an experience. I remember Body Language was really a ?huh? Moment. And Bicycle Race...and....

You know a Freddie song when you hear it, especially the early stuff! 😂 Theatrical, drama filled, intricate lyrics and musical instruments? And harmonies. Bryan’s songs tended to have noise, he says in the One Vision documentary that he liked the noise of One Vision. But he can also be very delicate as well. They are just all so good, bottom line, full stop. ❤️

Whenever I listened to Queen in the seventies, I had a bit of sinesthesia - I could smell deep green, especially when listening to this number.

I think you you should try "Another One Bites The Dust " Queen was not going to release it as a single. In fact it barely made it on to the record. Michael Jackson heard it at a show and insisted they release it as a single. It shot straight to the top of the charts and stayed there forever. Written by bassist, John Deacon, I've heard it's about the Valentine's Day massacre. Great reaction!

But the deep cuts of Queen albums truly show their immense talent more so than the commercial hits. Queen II is an entire story from song to song. There is a video by ArsonArt giving his analysis of the album and many agreed after he broke it down song by song. All Queen albums, per the group, are meant to be played as on the record as opposed to "shuffle " to get the most out of the time they put in on how each song should be placed on the album. Queen II is a perfect example. Check it out.
MJ was a big Queen fan and used to go to their concerts when they were in L.A. He's the one who told them to put out ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST as a single, which went to #1 and many people thought it was a song by black performers. Other early Queen react to: Seven Seas of Rye (based on a pretend land that Freddie and his sister play with) and Death on Two Legs (a diss song toward their first manager that ripped them off) and In the Lap of the Gods (Revisited) - 2 different songs with almost the same name
So basically he picked up a few traits from them
MJ copied the one glove and the military style jacket and his Thriller album has Queen influences
This was from their second album, and the first three were very experimentals, thaks why is so complex, it´s also de same album that includes "The White Queen". My love for Queen is so deep because they traverse over so many different types of music - one of my dear favorites because I have sung it many times is Melancholy Blues.
