I use no bucket and just spray cleaner on all my brushes, then rinse them with pressure washer . There is no need for a wheel bucket at all. don't waste time or effort. get it done easy and without so many buckets. you should pre rinse wheels as well as it drastically removes and loosens brake distcdirt n grime prior to applying cleaner and foam. people think that chemicals won't work as well on a wet wheel, but if you think about it , half oz. extra of water isn't going to dilute your wheel cleaner at all. I compete a wheel cleaning in 2 and a half minutes using only my foamer pressure washer and 3 brushes. work smarter..not harder. 💪

    Thanks for this Nick!!
After watching this video I not only use this method, but I’m doing the two bucket method for my wheels, and I can confirm you get much less dirt in the buckets 🪣 than if you only use one bucket or not rinse the brushes between contact cleans.
Btw…when is Yum Cars going to release a dedicated wheel bucket?

I always use the two bucket method with my wheels as you say why do it on paint and not on painted diamond cut alloys. If my wheels are really dirty I do rinse my tools but I will going forward have the lance to hand as an extra rinse step as that makes sense in my eyes. Thanks for the tip.

I use no buckets, spray the wheel with wheel cleaner and the tyre with APC. Brush the barrels, faces and tyres and then just pressure wash it off. That's how I've always done it and never had any issues. I do wash my wheels weekly so they are never really that dirty.

Some would say that by washing the barrel first (like you did on the first wheel) you are bringing some of the worst grime and contamination out to then grind it into the face of the wheel when you wash it.

Please forgive me Nick, for I add HDD Brake-Through Wheel Shampoo to the wash water. But I do always spray-rinse my woolies and brushes after working on each area of my 5-spoke alloy wheel before putting them back into the wash bucket. I always direct the water spray AWAY from the car and the bucket while washing the brushes, to avoid any contamination. Water over-spray can dull the shine on my freshly 'Ceramic-Boost'-ed paint finish.

Agreed! I think the trouble is people look at it as a inferior area. Focusing on the basis of using one bucket to decontaminate the car, in this case wheels, so the dirt isn't transfered to the paintwork. In this way they completely forget that the wheels and paint/finish needs the same care. I guess a lot of people aren't that bothered with the finer finish of wheels as they are the bodywork.

Even using a one bucket method…it can be achieved if the process is correct. I apply tyre cleaner & wheel cleaner. While leaving the wheel cleaner to dwell I scrub the tyres then rinse off without any initial agitation. This does most of the heavy lifting, taking most of the grime off. I then apply more wheel cleaner if needed but more often than not I’ll just apply some pre wash and foam then go in with various wheel brushes and wheel mitt. I rinse any brushes & mitts before going back into the bucket. Last time I washed the car, after all four wheels were done, the water was pretty much clear apart from the odd bit of grit under the grit guard 😀👍

I will add that the following comments are just my personal thoughts…
When it comes to wheel cleaning, one thing I could never wrap my head around, if the wheel is extremely dirty, most folk will spray on their brand of choice regards a wheel cleaner, then after some dwell time, go straight in with their wheel brushes, mitts to agitate the dirt. This to me just means your taking all that extremely aggressive brake dust then brushing it and swirling it around your alloys. This just don’t sit right with me ( especially with my gloss black wheels ) so surely it makes more sense to rinse that initial cleaner off, hopefully taking the the bulk of or at very least the worst parts of the brake dust with it. If you then reapply some product and then go in for the agitation stage, surely that would minimise the chance of marking your alloys. I know nothing can always be full proof and sometimes things just happen…but is it just me that thinks this way or am I completely off the mark here…?
      Any feedback welcomed 😀👍

I just use the bucket to hold my wheel brushes and mitts but don't fill it up with water at all. I hate fishing for brushes in water. I pre-wash the wheels first, then pre-load my brush with product, do a pass, rinse the brush with the power washer, put back in the bucket. Once you find your pace, it doesn't take time at all to rinse your brush, and you're saving time from trying to find your brush that's hiding underneath a layer of foam and some black water.

I have never understood why everybody even Matt at Obsessed Garage use the rough brushes etc and just go all in on the brake dust once the iron remover or such have gone purple and not rinse the wheel before going on and agitate and trying to minimize the dirt possible.
It is THE worst dirt you find on a car, why? Because the pads contains all forms of metals and then you have the rust from these particles too and this is like Swinto on the wheels which you would never do on the car paint.
