Watch her do The phantom of the opera with 4 tenors. Nicole is classically trained in voice, dance and theatre, a triple threat!! Not only that but she rules in all of the categories. Its really a shame that the PUSSYAT DOLLS, and the 2 hits they had has defined her. She also won Dancing with the Stars. Go and look at some of her performances, not only technically sound, but she EMOTES every flick of the fingers, tap of the toes, and watching her, you feel it too. And isn't that the reason we perform? To convey and sustain a symbiotic relationship with the audience? Thereby entertaining them. Btw, I prefer her to Brightman. Those F5s are fire. Peace and Love

If I may give you one advice... rather than tell us it s pop and poppy and etc .... have a look on who was Eva Perron and how she was on stage .... you will probably change your mind on that amazing performance... far away from « Évita » or even the song made by Judy Covington ! Wish you a good day !

Sir, I think you misjudged her performance esp the hand gestures. Spanish and Spanish-influenced dances like flamenco and the Argentine tango has a lot of that. Maybe she ws trying to inject some of these elements as a nod to the culture associated with this particular song.
The "poppy" comment was also unfair. This song was popularized by pop artists _Karen Carpenter and Madonna respectively.

You don't understand the need for the hand movements? Have you ever seen this on stage? It's key to the performance, this is Eva Peron addressing her people from the balcony of the Casa Rosada, and the gestisculating was key to this scene in the stage production as it emulates Peron's public addresses as seen in newsreel footage.

You're so correct. Surely anyone who saw Evita would be aware of this. It was a bizarre criticism irritatingly repeated. The entire reaction was weak. How many times did he have to remind us she's a "pop singer"? He absolutely refused to watch this with an open mind. He prejudged this performance, as was clear from his introduction.

Yeah it's kind of ridiculous. There's actually studies behind hand motions while singing. If you use the same hand motion to hit the same note and do it all the time, it becomes muscle memory for your hand and for your vocal cords. I'm explaining that poorly but that's the gist. And the hate on closing her eyes for no reason, I close my eyes when I sing. Quite a bit because I'm connecting with the music. And it helps with nerves. I think she did incredible.

She has a very strong background in musical theatre and she was very clearly playing the role, with the hand movement and looking away and closing eyes. Andrew Lloyd Webber has watched and enjoyed many of her performances. It was very clear throughout this that you had premade assumptions and bias towards her. I found you very condescending, referring to her as a 'pop singer' in the way that you did. You should hear her rendition of Memory or Phantom of The Opera. Just a pop singer? Yeah right. She was definitely more theatrical in the early parts of her career, but she’s been doing pop for so long that it’s bled into her technique and stylistic choices. So... I’m torn...
There were def elements chosen that are worth critiquing and I think they were 100% accurate.
With that said the general response did have a fairly high level of condescension. It’s quite clear there is a bias against either pop singing or pop singers singing musical theatre music. The idea that everything she did that was deemed acceptable in this performance was somehow surprising is def insulting and a slap in the face to an artist that has worked her whole life to get to where she is and has been selected specifically by this composer to sing his music on multiple occasions.
No one is above reproach and I’m sure that Marc is more than qualified to do the critiquing, but Nicole has earned a level of respect that I’m not sure was given in this review.

    • @MarcDanielPatrick
      @MarcDanielPatrick  4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

Hi Jaime, thank you for the comment. Anyone reviewing any performance is going to come into it with some preconceived notion of what they're about to experience. It's why movie / book/ tv reviews exist in the first place, its why everyone has their fav actor / singer/ author/ etc. When I am surprised and my opinion is shifted I will always admit to that and concede that I underestimated the performer. As I feel I did in this video.

    • @scooskistar4048

Exactly, ALW himself always gives her her due props. Chooses her to sing his songs and to do the main studio recording of Memory, even though the decision to choose her drew criticisms from some who were 'original biased' as per wanting the original singer to do it
She's also performed a gazillion times with other greats like andrea bocelli, david foster and so on.. They say same about her powerful emotive voice
This guy was extra disturbingly condescending from beginning to the end..almost unwillingly doing it, picking on nothings, fixating on her pop career 'everything was such a pop thing to do' (pop she embarked on to get a chance to be seen by tops and to do everything she was gifted to do after realising her gifts)... He was blind to the obvious greatness she holds' clue which 1 was andrew's presence 'she can't be all that BAD cos andrew's there'. He didn't even watch till the end to hear his comments
Undermined her good acting and interpretation of the song with her body and expression instead said it was poppy and didn't know what it meant (clueless much) but same him at the end criticises her going out of character immediately the song ended (character he didn't really acknowledge while it went on and kept asking what it was and deemed unnecessary 'no reason but atleast she's doing something not just standing' (I never knew it was a pop thing to be expressive and move arms while we classical singers stand like a stick singing)
Also undermined her apt and strong pronunciations of the words especially argentina when most argentinians were impressed with that. Talked about 'traditional' like it's not refreshing when something as good as this isn't traditional
Talked about her emotions just coming out instead of him truthfully saying he got connected in the middle-end as he couldn't help himself no more after initially being judgemental.. obviously he doesn't know how nicole throws herself in a song she sings from beginning to the end she's involved.

His compliments were so shallow 'it's a mix, performing SOMEWHAT, suprisingly this and that... holding SOME SORT of character'
Her focusing on hitting beautiful notes ended with well 'she's just a pop singer'
...then a backhand she looks beautiful though
I felt yea he's better now midway into it as he kinda finally acknowledges her voice and emotions but then went on criticising her gestures
'...Number of HUGE broadway stars I could have reviewed but gave THIS a chance...she's starting, it's getting there' yet again indirectly comparing her in a condescending manner and dismissing her effort so far in that performance.
"Her voice is not an issue it's beautiful but her pop whatever throws him off"🤦‍♀️ He spent more time criticising
Ended it with indirectly saying for a PCD woman she did well and only cos ALW likes it, then people have to like it
He clearly didn't know of her background. Obviously doesn't rate her and made it cloud his judgement and everything else, instead of him being logical and professional as a coach should. BIAS & PREJUDICE. Wouldn't want to be coached by him/someone like him or follow his reviews, criticisms and judgements ever! sad!

I have done hundreds of concerts singing music theatre songs and opera. I always imagined I was in a performance. Did it always read that way from a seasoned audience member? I don’t know. But I would hope I wasn’t being judged as a teaching technique on a concert performance as apposed to my stage performance in the same role. Not appropriate. Not as a teaching technique. To be honest I am a Broadway head and I have never heard so much passion, depth and heart in this song a lot of broadway stars sing this song carefree because they know they can because they already know that they are going to get praise and glory because it’s them but from a pop singers stand point she is not just a pop singer she was classically trained and has a broadway background but because the bias and prejudice stand point of her being a pop singer gives an open door to criticize everything she does she playing the role and Andrew Lloyd Webber handpicked her she’s been doing a lot of musical theatre lately and I’m living for it she has a Gorgeous voice and I found Nicole’s beautiful voice on this song and feel in love with her so because she is a point singer she made it her mission to impressed as if a broadway performer did it, it honestly would’ve been mediocre because they already know that they would get praised for it, this is honestly my most favorite performance of this song and it brought me to tears, She is amazing and one of the best to ever do this song, She sang this song with emotion and passion and I was amazed so I don’t like that you placed her in a box. Yeah, she is a pop singer so what she did better than most broadway stars. That’s when it comes to the prejudice and bias remarks with putting performers in boxes it doesn’t matter what genre you sing, what you sing or the tone you sing in, it’s about the passion and the mission to make the audience feel and take something from it and I feel as though because you are a broadway musical coach you have this duty to just come for and penalize from what you know and you what you feel a broadway star should be and you feel as though because she a pop singer she can’t do it but that not true at the end she was just being generous and didn’t have a stick up her butt she is just a generous person.

I spend most of my listening time to classical music and opera. Nicole impresses me, her voice is powerful and pure as a mountain stream. She also impresses Andrew Lloyd Webber, who says Nicole sings and acts his music the best of anyone he has seen and heard. That's kind of indicative. Personally, I get chills and goosebumps from this performance, just as you said you did. The gestures seemed completely appropriate to the character, for me.

Interesting. I have judged many other performers (in other videos) before they ever started, however THIS is the video you choose to take issue with it. I think the lesson here is that people are going to get defensive of singers or performers that they are fans of. I cant change that.

She has even sung The Phantom of the Opera and held her own, including the high E6 with four West End former Phantoms. And they tweeted that she's incredible. :) (John Owen-Jones did, I believe.
