Korean families reunite in North after 70 years

  • Torn apart by war for more than 60 years, dozens of families from North and South Korea broke down in tears as they were allowed to meet relatives they hadn't seen or heard from in decades.
It was the first time in three years that the North has permitted such reunions, all the more precious as previous participants have not been authorised to meet again.

Yeah, definitely. My grandpa was one of those people who escaped from the North during the Korean war. He was 14 years old and came all the way to the South by himself. He escaped with his two older siblings leaving his parents and 5 younger siblings behind but both his brother and sister were executed after they were caught leaving North. Somehow, my grandpa managed to survive by escaping jail. My mum tried to find his family members to have them met in one of these events but she had no luck. Either the waiting list was extremely long or the family was no longer living. I think she found out later that the whole family was executed after my grandpa and his siblings fled. I know he was told by his parents to flee (just the older three) because it'd be too risky with the younger ones. He passed away yesterday and I hope he's with his long lost family he's been longing to see since the day he escaped. If it weren't for his strong will to survive, I wouldn't be here today.

The last one is the most saddest as I actually watched the documentary film of her that started days prior before the left SK to go to NK. She kept the "Well, I guess it'll be ok to meet him but I have no attachment nor feelings" and the very second she sees him in person shes forces her way to him and has to be forced off of him. Now THAT is the most saddest thing. Going from the "I have no feelings" to straight up love and emotions.. And can someone stop chopping those damn onions?

Only if the Kim dynasty regime collapses but even then South Korea's economy is still one of the highest in the world while North Korea is tanked, so reunification comes at a cost

I know of 80 year old man who got selected for the lottery to see his son and daughter in the North for 12 hours (it was 2004 reunion I think) - they were seperated for nearly 60 years. He has been sending it the application since mid 80s. As soon as he came back, very next day he sent out another application for another lottery...hoping to be selected again.

NK has to make sure there are no defectors and their stranglehold is air tight. No unauthorized passing of information etc. Must control everything right down to how long a mother can hug her son

They don't get to live together. It's only a temporary reunion. They were able to meet after so many years only to be separated again. At least now they know that their family's alive or how they are doing.
