One thing that I think is underappreciated as one of the keys to Columbo's repeated success is how he understands his suspect so well. Wonderful scenes. You immediately get a sense that the young king is a man of character and it pays off in the end. The little details of courtesies and handshakes is fascinating. And then there is the acting. Columbo really carries off the ruse that he is smart but has been defeated even though he has everything under control. And Hector Elizondo is superb. He does not overplay the villainy or the crushing defeat. In the best episodes of the series, the villain is always a worthy adversary.

I come back to this clip so many times because it's one of the most fitting ends. The entire episode this character espouses that the old ways of his country are good, they shouldn't be changed, they need to be respected, in opposition to the king who wishes to change the system for the better. Yet when this man is faced with being on the receiving end of the system he so proudly supports, suddenly it isn't justice, it's barbarism. He was already caught, he was going to be punished either way, yet he chose the justice of a foreign land over his own and that speaks volumes.

The "Embassy office" and desk was Harold Lloyd's. The estate mansion was left furnished and with most of his books and furnishings after his death in 1971. The executors couldn't get the money and Beverly Hills City's permission to preserve it all as a Museum of Film History as his will dictated. The Estate was sold for a low price afterward. In 2021, only the Mansion and a few acres are still there, and I believe the interior was modernized by subsequent owners. When Peter Falk is sitting at grand iron gates outside, those were Mr. Lloyd's gates, as was the sweeping long driveway (now gone).

Most Columbo villains tend to be charismatic charmers or just pompous arrogant snobs but Hector Elizondo's Hassan Salah is not your typical antagonist and is a performance you can truly appreciate after multiple viewings.
At first he gives off a cold, stoic, calculating and emotionless vibe as well as a feeling of religious devotion to his country's customs. The accent's subtlety accentuates this perfectly.
As the episode progresses and Columbo's antics start to get to him, his stoicism begins to fade but the final scene was the best.
That's when Hector Elizondo drops the mask and you can actually see his genuine emotion and charisma take over the character as his perceived victory approaches. He is truly enjoying Columbo admitting defeat and begging for his job only to revert back to the default demeanor when he realizes he's been tricked. Great Stuff, truly great stuff.

So true. These days it’s a miracle if they show up at all...unless it’s to harass you over something petty and non-criminal. If you’re lucky, maybe they’ll call you back sometime, so you can “file a report” over the phone. You know, for any statisticians who might care to make a report of their own, just for the record, of course, on the category of crime you experienced. That way, if someone ever get curious about the frequency of that particular type of crime, they can look it up, and satisfy their curiosity.

Hassan: It, you could but it would be difficult.

I could tell from that very last look on Columbo's face that he didn't quite approve of what he had to do to make his arrest on this occasion. But I thought it was at least handled considerably better than in Strange Bedfellows.
