      I never bought that nonsense in WOK from Carol Marcus....basically that he wouldn't have been a good father to David, so that's why she kept them apart. It just goes completely against the Captain Kirk from the series. This character would've been an excellent father.

    Lucky enough to have seen this series in its original run and this episode was one of my favourites. Tight script and well developed tension. What I realized later was the small things. This episode had a unique soundtrack - pretty sure it was the only one that had the music scored individually, rather than recycling bits and bobs. Also this is the only show where they had the actors walk around the front of the bridge set in front of the view screen - a couple of quick pans that made the illusion so much more real. Director knew his stuff.

    • @johnhunter2294
      @johnhunter2294 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      As far as I know you're right about the music; this was the only episode that was individually scored. It makes a difference; it's more of a cohesive whole than the "bits and bobs" previously used. (Of course, bits and bobs of this score surfaced regularly throughout the rest of the show's run.) I think there was one (perhaps two) other episodes where Kirk walked in front of the viewscreen, but it was definitely a rare thing.

    • @markstacey1329
      @markstacey1329 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Not the only one, but one of the very few that had an original musical composition and, quite frankly, I could not imagine this episode using re-hashed music. The music is so heavily responsible for telling the story and making it such a fantastic episode. Each major player has its own theme, which is just genius. The Constellation, the Planet Killer and Kirk all have their own unique musical chords. Between the score of Sol Kaplan, the fantastic directing of Marc Daniels, and the guest acting of William Windom, this is truly a masterful piece of television history.
      On a side note, I do know that "Amok Time" and "Friday's Child" also had their own original musical scores in season 2.

    • @johnhunter2294
      @johnhunter2294 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@markstacey1329 The music set the atmosphere for the episode in a way that no collection of bits and bobs ever could, and built the tension steadily from the discovery of the Planet Killer to the climax. It was a HUGE part of the drama. In my opinion, this is one of the three best TOS episodes and one of the ten best Star Trek episodes of any series. A simply marvelous hour of television; great writing, great acting, and great music. And done on an effects budget of maybe forty dollars.

    Definitely in my top 5 episodes. My only gripe is that i still prefer the OLD graphics of the Planet Killer over the new CGI. Something about that kaleidoscope-turbine-looking interior was literally fear and shiver inducing to a pre-teen watcher. It still gives me goosebumps. The whole episode: The music, William Windom's portrayal of a commander who literally (unintentionally) sent his whole crew to die, and he had to watch it and listen to their screams ( still almost causes me to shed a tear for him when he retells it." There was... but not any more...")... the PTSD/ shock, the methodical plot.. ponderous and ominous in it's inexorable march to the heart of the most densely populated part of our galaxy, the interplay between all of the crew/ cast... Just a fabulous amalgamation of emotion and story inertia that definitely leads to an outcome greater than the sum of it's parts. Classic Episode in Classic Trek.

    Also, on a different note: What I like here is that the Captain, after getting beamed aboard, is actually running to get to the bridge faster. TNG unfortunately invented the stoic walk to and across the bridge, no matter the situation and the later shows sticked with that. While this display of urgency here does not look great from a cinematic point of view, it is what people would actually do. There is, after all, no time to waste.

      This is not the first time Scotty used the term "Jury rigging" in order to fix an electrical problem. There is another episode where Scotty used the term "Jury rigging" but the producers intentionally changed the on-screen wording and substituted the term to "Jerry rigging".
      Funny how they had no problem using the actual term "Jury rigging" as opposed to the latter term "jerry-rigging" in subsequent episodes. Some lib wussyboy didn't like the term and changed it to "Jerry rigging". What a sissy.
      Historically, the term "Jury rigging" was an old term used by people who believed that the mob was somehow threatening members of the Jury in order to get other mob members free from guilty verdicts. The mob either paid off or threatened members of the jury. But for some reason, the term "jury-rigging" has become insulting to many libs who do not wish to acknowledge American history as it actually occurred. Libs hate American history so they wish to amend (change) it. Thus, to be politically correct, the TV libs changed the term from "Jury rigging" to "jerry-rigging". You can see and read the amendments on Star Trek as the series progresses.
      All I can say is: "tell that to Al Capone".

      Before this played on TV, William Windom starred in a show named, "My World, and Welcome To It," about a warm-hearted and witty cartoonist and it was illustrated by comic drawings of James Thurber. I could not get that out of my head when "Doomsday Weapon" first played. At the time, I wished that Jason Robards had been given the role.
      But soon you will have an A.I. at hand to paint any actor you like into the role. Imagine Patrick McGoohan, from "The Prisoner," as Decker --- or Kirk Douglas or Sean Connery. Wouldn't it be a hoot to see John Wayne wrestling with Kirk for control of the shuttle? Of course, a lot of wise guys will come up with silly versions where English comics play Decker. Just think of Benny Hill, Peter Sellars, Terry-Thomas, Dudley Moore, Peter Cook, or anybody from Monty Python, as Decker. Can you see Decker as the man from the Ministry of Silly Walks?
      Not to leave out all of the comics of the US at the time. Buddy Hackett or Tom Smothers would have been wild as Decker.
      But the A.I. could create the role with contemporary comics. I've been watching Dave Chapelle on TH-cam. He already has his own uniform. Can you imagine him? "That thing blew up the entire planet!! My crew was half LGBTQ! All of my trans friends were down there! All my niggaz is dead! Even my one white friend, Chip."
      What if Roseanne Barr played Kirk? "...stop whinning about your dead crew, Decker. I gotta worry about my own crew's asses, you sniveling dumb fuck."

      I don't like it. It just looks fake! The long shot of Kirk's crippled ship making a slow turn is an interruption of the pacing, plus it looks stupid fake. The original talent spent lots of effort tweaking this until they got it just right, the pacing. You can't disturb that just to put in some dumb fake CGI shot. Besides that, even if it were better than the original (which it isn't), it would still detract because 1: This, including the techniques used at the time, is a piece of cinematic history that should be preserved and not tainted, and 2: any change at all interrupts the nostalgic factor of reliving what I saw in 1968, and even people that didn't see it then can still feel the nostalgia. 3: The point of these is the story, why waste time, money, and talent on dumb effects and end up with exactly the same value, which is a great, effective story. Those new shots add zero to the value of these shows, so what's the point?

    • @actioncom2748
      @actioncom2748 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheLarryBrown I disagree. In the old special effects the The shuttle and the Constellation look about the same size. So they weren't very careful with the prespective. The new shots fix this.

    As 7-9 yr olds we use to say this was the ice cream cone episode. It also looked like a snack that had just come out called "Bugles". As imaginative hardcore little boys back in the 60's we use to say it looked like something else that may have come from Uranus, but as a 67 yr old adult now, I cant say what we meant. One of my fav's forever, it sure was the scariest. Thanks brother!

My Mom also had a cornucopia she used to display as a centerpiece on our dining room table in the fall, and the doomsday machine also reminded me of that. You don’t see many of those anymore either.
